    Hi
Can you please make an effort to contact people who live along your planned routes and inform them of disruption and ask the people directing traffic to be polite to other road users?
AS I said I am considering a protest Sunday if I am not contacted, I am delighted for any cyclist to ride by my home but please a bit of consideration

I know it's not Friday but I've the popcorn ready for this thread. Go for it

Wonder what the Gardai would make of someone using livestock to purposefully disrupt traffic? (premeditation present on this thread and all...)

Are you seriously suggesting that race organisers should contact every home owner along the race route? If the roads were going to be closed for the duration of the race then that might be a reasonable request but I'm assuming that this will not be the case and that at worst you might be confined to your home for a couple of minutes as the peloton passes?

Hi Haybob, please contact your local cycling club, I'm sure they'd be delighted to help you. Cycling clubs are not represented here so making this demand here would not be productive. The cycling clubs in Clare are Clare Crusaders, Burren Cycling Club and West Clare Cycling Club, there maybe one or two others I forgot. Please also be aware of the damage you could do to yourself and other road users, not to mention that it is also illegal to stop traffic. Most cycling events are also run through An Garda Síochana and I know from a Kilkenny point of view they've never asked us to contact people on our route. As you already know there's an event happening this Sunday, I think the cycling club has displayed enough consideration.

NOTICE: to all residence in County Clare. Please be aware that cyclists may pass by your premises. If you see them, wait till they pass before moving onto the road.

    Thank you.

Newbridge CC basically did this for their recent Newbridge GP, a note was dropped through my letterbox giving start and finish times, the number of laps to be done and asking people to make sure dogs/pets were out of harm's way.
It also thanked locals for their consideration over the years.

A little bit of courtesy on both sides goes a long way.

Their route seems to be less than 18km. Multiply by 10 and it would be impractical. What to do about those just passing through? Should there be a national mailshot in case day trippers get delayed as well?
The roads aren't closed, so it's not necessary to mount a publicity campaign.
I do think haybob should give notice to all within a 5km radius each time he brings his herd or tractor onto the road. I'm sure he'd agree it's the reasonable thing to do.

I agree 100% but I think expecting race organisers to contact every house along a route that doesn't actually close a road is unreasonable! I think RT66's comparison to farmers bringings herds of animals and slow tractors onto public roads is a very apt one!

Look at it this way, if the locals don't know it's coming eventually you'll end up with a situation like this.

I'm a farmer, we take machines and animals on the road (animals generally only across) but if we know that something is happening it's easy enough to organise not to be causing a problem for others.

haybob you should ask all local farmers to tell you when they are out too, and any slow moving vehicles, maybe give Bus Eireann a shout, local coach companies. (and the local equestrian clubs, they might have people out blocking the roads too)

Lads there are some appallingly IGNORANT posts here and I really hope that they don’t reflect the majority of cyclist out there I’m sure they don’t but COP onto yourselves no one is saying ye can’t use the road no is saying ye can’t even close the road but ye could inform the people some posters here seem to think that they don’t need to inform people, Andalucia. RT66, RPL1 seem to be suggesting its fine to disrupt the roads WITHOUT the basis courtesy of letting people know. BIG PROPER ADDS IN THE LOCAL PAPER and the local radio too, if ye can’t be bothered to go door to door.

As for the attacks on farmers, we don’t close down the roads and there are ads on NATIONAL MEDIA about harvest time.

All I want is a bit of consideration I pay my road tax too you know and it’s not great to be told to ‘’**** into that gate there’’ by some lad in a yellow vest directing traffic on behalf of the race.
I can give the usual example of a sick person in a rush to hospital or whatever too .

    1) No the road isn't mine but I use it to leave my house the race restricted my ability to leave my house I could have been informed and not abused.
    2) I don't want to determine who used them all I want is a bit of consideration and information

    1) I'm not bringing cattle 15km or 180 km on the road
    2) I pull in to let faster moving traffic go in a tractor or jeep and trailer, not all farmers do but not all cyclists are perfect either

I'd say you'd have a better chance of catching the eye of the "recent road race organisers" by taking an add out on Clare Fm or the "loacl papers" yourself, rather than posting on boards.ie. Strange as it may seem, not everybody in the world reads the cycling forum here. I know, I know, it seems rediculous, but there ARE actually people out there like that. Mad eh?

Seriously Haybob the route on Sunday is 130kms long, it is just not practical to expect the organisers to call into every house! However, I would agree with you that a notice in the Clare People would be a reasonable expectation!

Two Sundays in a row??....where i live i get cyclists, cars, horses passing every day!!..

If they were all to drop a flyer thru my letterbox telling me when they were due to pass by my door, i'd need a bigger house!

And do you understand that two Sundays in a row this one and last one I will be restricted without notice for leaving my home. I never had any intention of leaving cattle out on the road to disrupt the race but I had to get my point across and still people think it ok to disrupt people willie nilly and I was abused by someone directing traffic and not a guard in sight either

At 130km, how long exactly does the op reckon that the cyclists will be outside their house blocking them in?

yea i have have dairy cows pass twice daily and the owner salutes me and all. this wa a cycle races not a few people out for a sunday cycle I'd have said ride but ye would have gone mad altogether then

That's clearly not true; you are stating here that you KNOW there is an event on next sunday, so you DO have notice, else you couldn't possibly know that!

What do you do when the tourist season comes back to town? How about the Lisdoonvarna festival?

Neither last Sunday's cycle or this Sunday's cycle are races, they are Leisure cycles (with last Sunday's also in aid of a very deserving Clare charity) for cyclists who enjoy cycling.

Why is it a bit late now?

It is likely that the cyclists will be past your house in a matter of minutes with no or very little disruption to your life. It will more than likely be on Clare FM and in the Clare Champion this week, just like the other cycle was. Does that not count?

Lisdoonvara festival doesnt effect me why would it I dont see your point at all
That just trying to make excuses now the only reason I know there is a race on next sunday is one kind poster here informed me

The tourists dont close the roads either and arent ignorant and dont tell is us to **** into that gate way

Page of the add in the champion please I didn't see it or hear it on Clare fm so NO ITS JUST NOT GOOD ENOUGHT IT'S MICKEY MOUSE AMATURE HOUR CRAP is what it is.

I met a road race over the weekend and it was a live road with live traffic and i was met with at least 60 bikes cycling straight into live traffic. every car on the road and to throw it into the ditch just to avoid them.

My question is if your racing on a live road should you not at least stick the the correct side?? just seems bit dangerous the way it was in this race. stewards didn't seem like much help at this particular event.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 347 ✭✭haybob

Yes you should, and the organisers always state this at the start of a race too. However, just like there are some dangerous overtaking manouvers in cars, there are also some by cyclists.

A holiday would help with both the anger, and being trapped in the house for a few minutes.

Could always sell up I suppose and move to somewhere less scenic where a leisure cycle would not be bothered going. Plenty of cities spring to mind.

There's an event on in the north clare region on sunday. you may be confined to your house. Get to the shops, offie etc on saturday and get the BBQ out the front garden and watch the spectacle. The forecast is good.

    Better?

From the blog, which is a recap of the show :
"Padraic Murphy of the Clare Sunset Foundation joined Gavin in studio to discuss this weekend’s major cycle event."
    even mentions the route:
"The 80 kilometre cycle will start and finish in Lahinch, taking in a route of the Cliffs of Moher, Doolin, Black Head, Ballyvaughan, Corkscrew Hill, Lisdoonvarna and Ennistymon."
