Morricone and the Minnesota Vikings select Matt Kalil, offensive tackle USC.

    Matt-Kalil.jpg

A quality player and while the Vikes have been making noises about Morris Claiborne, and it would shake up this draft greatly, we have to pick based on what we think will happen.

Kalil will shore down left tackle for the next 10 years and is a potenial annual pro bowler.

Up next the Browns and DDC1990.

With the 4th Pick of the NFL Draft 2012, the Cleveland Browns select,

Trent Richardson, Running Back out of Alabama.

Next up is UnitedIrishman with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers

    tampa_bay_buccaneers_logo-10135.jpg

With the 5th selection of the 2012 draft, Tampa Buccaneers select:

    Morris Claiborne, CB, LSU

With Richardson off the board, the next logical decision was to repair the CB position where Ronde Barber and Aqib Taliq are looking likely to be on the way out for one reason or another. Decision came down to what Bucs picked up in the FA, and with Vincent Jackson acquired at WR then it became unreasonable to go with Justin Blackmon when there were other glaring holes throughout the team.

Claiborne becomes the second CB to be drafted at 5 in sucessive years with Patrick Peterson being selected by the Arizona Cardinals the year before. The LSU corner is a cut above the rest of the CB's in his draft class such as Stephon Gilmore of South Carolina or Dre Kirkpatrick, despite the latter being on the winning side in the National Championship against Claiborne. However, Claiborne can't be held responsible for the inept performance of his sides offence in that game where Alabama scored only 1 TD.

Alongside Tyrann 'Honeybadger' Mathieu (a likely top 5 pick next season), Claiborne was part of a defense that conceded only 137 points in 13 games - a phenomenal achievement given the standard of opposition throughout the season.

Next team on the clock is the Rams, and adrian522..

With the 6 the Pick of the 2012 NFL Draft the St. Louis Rams select:

    Justin-Blackmon.jpg

    Justin Blackmon...

I guess no real surprises here though I don't think a receiver is going to solve all their problems I think it is a good move for the Rams, they still need to address their offensive line and its probably too early to select David DeCastro though I think he would be good for the Rams.

Next up it's the Jaguars and JaMarcus Hustle

With the 7th pick of the 2012 NFL Draft, the Jacksonville Jaguars select.....

    Riley-Reiff.jpg

RILEY REIFF - OFFENSIVE TACKLE - IOWA

The Jaguars decide to give Blaine Gabbert some help by taking the #1 tackle on their board. WR and DE were a consideration here but the priority was to give Gabbert more time in the pocket.

HigginsJ and the Miami Dolphins are now on the clock....

With the 8th pick in the 2012 NFL Draft the

    select

    Stanford_logo.jpeg

    JMartin.jpg
    Jonathan Martin, 6-6/304
    Offensive Tackle
    Stanford

Martin can start at right tackle and help the ground game come on again from last year. He is a big upgrade on current right tackle Mark Colombo.

Wide-out was a consideration to replace Marshall but there is plenty of depth there in this draft class. Tannehill was a consideration but I just dont see how you can pick him 8th. They should try to trade down to the mid teens if they want him.

Next on the clock KaiserGunner and the Panthers

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,475 ✭✭✭KaiserGunner

With the 9th pick of the 2012 Nfl Draft the Carolina Panthers
    Pold.gif

pick Corner Back Dre Kirkpatrick from Alabama Crimson Tide.

    140127468_display_image.jpg?1332993640

I decided to upgrade and strengthen the Panthers Secondary as it is one of many needs for the Panthers. Janoris Jenkins was another option but his off field antics went against him for the pick. Dre Kirkpatrick also had an off field case against him but was dropped. He appears to be the second top CB prospect in the draft so thats why he was selected 9th overall.

Next up on the clock at pick ten is deise_boi with the Buffalo Bills.

    South Carolina CB Stephon Gilmore

    107928501_display_image.jpg?1307836761

Tough pick to make here! The Bills' greatest need is at LT, however with both Reiff and Martin surprisingly off the board already, I felt that the quality was missing for a #10 pick at that position. This left me to choose between the likes of Tannehill, Gilmore and Floyd which wasn't so straight forward. Tannehill is still quite raw and certainly not ready to be a starter in the NFL, and with that I just can't see the Bills drafting at him at #10 (if he's available) when there are other pressing needs.

That left me to pick between Floyd and Gilmore. While I would be happy with either at 10, there is a deep receiver class in this year's draft and I fancy Buffalo to pick one up in later rounds. Which leads me to why I picked Gilmore. He's recognised as a very vocal leader and a tough tackler, and I think he'd be a great addition to the Buffalo D which has undergone drastic changes this season. I also see him as being part of a very good CB duo with Aaron Williams who was drafted last year.

Next on the clock is JohnnyRyan99 and the Kansas City chiefs!

    1231vte.jpg

This was a difficult decision for me to make. At the beginning I was tempted to go with who I thought was "the best player available" because The Chiefs have a lot of holes that need filling and with so much talent still left on the board there's plenty of options, but after looking into their needs I felt DeCastro made the most sense.

It's a safe pick and while The Chiefs still need a NT and a Pass Rusher I think they can be taken care of in later rounds. What this pick will do is improve their running game and with new signing Peyton Hillis coupled with the return of Jamall Charles from injury this will be a major boost, not to mention a pick that will certainly be well received by the two RB's.

For me DeCastro is the best Guard in the 2012 Draft and at 6'5, 316lb with deceivingly impressive athleticism he'll have no problem lining up from day one. Expect DeCastro to grow into a Pro Bowl Level Guard and become one of the best young Guards in the NFL.

Could have went the obvious route with Kuelchy/Ingram/Couples but **** it, I'm the GM and Matt Flynn is getting some weapons! :p

Flynn, Skittles, An injury free Sidney Rice, Baldwin, Zach Miller and now Michael Floyd. If you want to win that NFC West you need the firepower to get by the vaunted 49ers D and the very underrated Cards D.

i can see the Cards trading down in the draft if picks turn out like this. Their biggest need is LT but the best guys have been taken and I think Mike Adams isn't worth the risk.
So I decided that we might as well take the top Linebacker on the board and improve the defense and give Patrick Peterson a little help.

    STK-NFL-CIB-P2004-01.jpg

Why go DE for the Bengals? I don't think the Bengals consider Coples because of the fact that he isn't going to fall this far in the draft. I think he goes to Miami at 8 but, whatever, I'm the GM. This is a difficult decision eased by the Bengals second pick at 21. I'm going for Quinton Coples because I don't trust the remaining corners this high. If the Bengals want to go to OG at 21 that will still be an option. The Bengals have lots of needs but I genuinely believe that at 17 Quinton Coples is an absolute steal.

Select Janoris Jenkins, Cornerback, North Alabama

    South+Carolina+v+Florida+JRoM7mi_Cpjl.jpg

After getting a quality DE with the 17th pick the Bengals' biggest needs are at Guard, Cornerback and Receiver. Of these positions, didn't see a guard or receiver rated high enough to take this early and have seen Jenkins rated as equal or better than earlier CB picks Kirkpatrick and Gilmore.
His talent is worth the character risk (good article by Don Banks of SI on him: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2012/writers/don_banks/02/26/janoris.jenkins/?xid=cnnbin)

Hope to pick up a guard in second round, or a tackle who can play guard.

    Ryan Tannehill - Quarterback - Texas A&M

    ryan-tannehill-1st-round-quarterback.jpg

I was worried about the amount of options I would have had with this pick before the mock started, but in my opinion it's been made pretty easy with Tannehill falling falling to 22. There's talk of the Browns considering Tannehill at number 4, but while the general consensus is that number 4 overall would be too high, if he did somehow fall into the laps of Cleveland at number 22 I think they'd have to pull the trigger on him.

Next up is Trippie with the Detroit Lions

The lions have a few needs none more so than cb, with the top 3 guys gone i dont see any point in reaching for lessor talents. Versatility is key in this pick and I have gone for someone who can play guard and then learn LT from Backus for one year before becoming the permanent starter when he moves on.

Long arms, great strength, very agile and can get down the field very quickly for a 340lb man. versatile as has played LT, RG and LG. Will keep stafford upright and healthy and as long as that happens the lions will have a chance to win games.

    Devon Still, DT, Penn State.

I initially thought of a wide receiver to give peyton some more play things, but I gradually saw less and less value, and more and more of a hole on their defensive line. It was a weak point and losing Brodrick Bunkley didn't help either. Fletcher Cox was my main choice, and I saw potential in Poe, but it came down to Still or Brockers. Brockers is a beast, and has a major potential, but Still looks alot more ready for the big boys, and certainly fits the "win now" mentality that will come with Peyton Manning

    Kendall+Wright+Baylor+v+Kansas+State+bywDh2ie3F1l.jpg

The Texans are so close to becoming genuine Super Bowl contenders. Despite losing 2 Quarterbacks and their number one receiver last year they still made the divisional playoffs.

I did look at replacing Mario Williams or improving the defensive line but I think most people will accept that their biggest need is at WR. When Andre Johnson went down last year neither Kevin Walter or Jacoby Jones was an able stand in. By adding Wright they get a ready made number two receiver to play opposite Johnson while also opening up the run game for Arian Foster and Ben Tate.

The Ravens main needs at offensive line, linebacker and defensive line are disappointed to see Konz, Hightower and Upshaw taken
In this situation I would expect the Ravens to trade back but here we taking Hill

Cam Cameron the OC runs an Air Coryell system and we saw last year with the addition of speed through Torrey Smith what can be done. Perfect for sending Hill deep to bring in long passes.

Ravens have taken ageing recievers in past years like Stallworth, Houshmandzadeh and Evans and it just does not work out.
Time for youth and speed and with Smith and Hill on the outside, Flacco will be able to go deep or else pass to Anquan Boldin in the slot, dump off to Ray Rice or use the two TE's, Pitta and Dickson

I did give Chandler Jones some consideration but we're going with Hill

Before the Ravens pick, I was wondering which of Steven Hill Or Coby Fleener to take. Thankfully with Hill now off the board my decision is a lot easier to make.
Fleener is the top rated TE in the draft. For quite a few years now, the only really effective TE the 49ers had was Vernon Davis & now with many teams moving to a systems which incorporate two decent TE's, I decided the 49ers should pull the triger with Fleener.
Of course one major advantage as well, is that he is reunited with his former Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh, so they already know each other rather well which should only help matters.

Very tempting to go with a running back or tight end here but with Fleener off the board there is a big drop off in talent behind him and I think there will be talent at running back available later in the draft. Worthy is a very explosive tackle with an impressive pass rush and fits how the Giants run their defence perfectly. He can just tear through blockers with ease and his strength allows him to push offensive lineman right back into the QB. With the Giants he'll get time to adjust to the pro game and learn from some of the best defensive players in the league.

The general consensus is that for the second round the Vikes need either a WR or CB. Vikes recently signed 2 cornerbacks and in Alshon Jeffery have an ideal player opposite Percy Harvin. The guy proved a lot of points when he shedded plenty of weight over the off season and running a 4.45 at his pro day.

He's as big as a tight end at 6'4 and 215 pounds and he can certainly move. Ponder needs a big target man he can throw to and Jeffery fills this need, while also being value. This was the player Mel Kiper thought was the 5th best player at the start of the college season.

Bobby Wagner- Linebacker out of Utah State

As a Bucs fan, Defence needs to be Sorted. The Running Back class isn't spectacular, and I feel LaMichael James will be around to pick up in the 3rd Round (although it looks like the Bucs might not have a 3rd Round pick.) Anyway, trades can be made to pick up a guy like James, who is a speed back, with good hands, and IMO will compliment LeGarret Blount.

So I went with the best Linebacker available, which is this guy, Bobby Wagner. Seems quite underated. A 4.45 40 time, with good tape, and good stats to back up. Could be a guy to shore up the Buc's terrible Run Defence from last year, where Mason Foster was run over time and time again. Even OLB's like Quincy Black and Dekoda Watson could be replaced with this guy. A nice pickup in the second round, which fills a desperate need for the Bucs.

With the 37th pick of the 2012 draft, Cleveland Browns select...

Zach Brown, University of North Carolina, OLB

Browns have a lot of needs on both sides of the ball. With a QB and RB picked up in the first round, a linebacker is the biggest need after that on defense. With so many receivers gone in the opening round, couldn't justify going so far down the list.

Many draft projections have Brown as a possible first rounder and given his impressive performance at the combine and clocked a 4.47 at his pro day. He'll improve Browns pass-rush (or lack thereof) big time and fits their 4-3 defense.

Well there are a few needs by the jags, some would say they need to cut their losses on Gabbert and draft another QB, others say all Gabbert needs are a few weapons and he'll show he is an NFL starter.

I lie somewhere in between, you need to give him at least 1 more year and you need to give him someone to throw to. So jags need a wideout and Sanu is a good fit, so Sanu it is.

MIKE ADAMS - OT - OHIO STATE

    icon_9180723-420x279.jpg

With a roster full of holes and having picked up Justin Blackmon and Kendall Reyes already, the Rams use this pick to try and keep Sam Bradford upright. From what I've read Adams seems like a risky pick that could turn out very well indeed. The Rams roll the dice here.

HigginsJ and the Carolina Panthers are on the clock.

    Andre Branch, 6-4/259

    Defensive End

    Clemson

The Panthers lack a 3rd round pick which complicated where to go here. Wide-Reveiver is an obvious consideration but good prospects like Joe Adams, Tommy Streeter and Ryan Broyles could be around at that point so we will pass here.

In the end it came down to 2 Clemson d-line prospects and Branch grades out high than Brandon Thompson. Branch is a phenomenal athlete with great upside.

With the 42nd pick of the 2012 NFL draft, The Miami Dolphins select....

    Boise State DE/OLB Shea McClellin

    shea_mcclellin.jpg

Having passed on taking a QB, WR, or a DE in the first round and with a number of the better prospects now off the board, I felt that McClellin was an intruiging pick for no.42.

McClellin's stock has risen in recent weeks and is even projected to be a late first rounder. Primarily he is a DE, however he was moved all over the field and performed very well at OLB. I believe that this had a knock on effect on his draft reputation, as it made him harder to rate. He's a solid pass rusher (which the Phins are severely lacking) and is also impressive in cover. Having shown the versatility to play in both a 4-3 and 3-4 system, McClellin would be a solid draft choice at this stage and a probable starter for the Dolphins come September.

With the 44th pick in the NFL Draft the Kansas City Chiefs select

    Kansas_City_Chiefs.gif
    Doug Martin, RB, Georgia

Chiefs would have liked for gone for a nose tackle or maybe a linebacker but the other GM's are wise and have snapped up most of the top prospects

    Big turnover here in Arrowhead
Thomas Jones is gone, so is Leron McClain and unlikely Jackie Battle will be back
Jamaal Charles will be back from injury, Peyton Hillis was signed and there is Dexter McCluster for certain packages
But we could do with another RB and so we select Doug Martin

With the mock addition of DeCastro and also a new RT Eric Winston, this will be a great running game

The Patriots' obvious needs are defensively but with their two mock draft picks so far they have added two new defensive lineman to their roster so that left me picking between a linebacker or a cornerback. Many of the the draft's top prospects at DL and LB have already been taken so I picked Alfonzo Dennard to help shore up the Patriots' ailing secondary.

Up next, the San Diego Chargers and Eli Manning.

With the 50th pick of the 2012 NFL draft the Chicago Bears select
    CHANDLER JONES, DE, SYRACUSE

Bears need help on both lines but the value pick here came on the defence side. Pair this fella up opposite Peppers and you should be able to consistently keep every QB off balance. Bears need to make an impact this season and this pick should help

Next up is Stev_o and the Eagles, pm'd
