Charity cycles generally have a much more relaxed atmosphere as well, you wont be hammering around the course but instead more than likely going along at a nice pace having some craic with other riders. Plenty of breaks and the likes on the way too.

    Did 85km the first week. 2 x 25km and 2 x 15 km.

I've taken the advice about pedalling faster by lowering the gears.

A family crisis put paid to cycling too much over the last few days but from tomorrow I'll be back at it. I'm finding the pain in my neck and upper back for a day after a cycle to be the only bit of unpleasantness but I'm sure that'll pass. After a 25 km cycle, sitting on the saddle can be very sore. Does resistance to that build up? I don't remember a problem in that area when I cycled years ago.
On that subject, someone told me that rubbing Vaseline on the inside of the padded area of the cycling shorts would help. Any truth in that?

Just make sure you plan in refuelling. I got a bike at the end of January and have about 600 miles on it now. Was out yesterday and started to fade energy-wise around the 50 mile mark. Had a planned stop at the In-Laws for lunch, but that was still 18 miles away. Was suffering for the last 8 of those miles, felt like my stomach was trying to eat itself. After lunch I did another windy twelve miles homes, bringing the total for the day to 78.

From now on I'm going to bring a mars bar or two with me and plan a stop for a bowl of soup or something similar at 40 mile intervals.
