I don't understand tipping over here. Staff wages are hourly and factored into the price of the meal. why are you paying someone twice to do one thing? do you tip your binman too?

the worst thing about it is that it is now expected. if someone doesn't tip (for a service they've already paid for), they'll be seen as stingy.
what kind of society are we living in?

Still doesn't answer why people give to certain workers unthinkingly while other workers - who might also go out of their way for you - would never get a tip.

    Exactly!

Worked in a local supermarket(for feicin years) and everyday worked on the tills and had to be nice, pleasant etc to all customers. If there was a problem I helped them. On top of all that I had to lift countless heavy boxes of shopping out for customers, massive bags of potatoes, coal, logs all that crap everyday. Never expected to get tipped as it was my job and I was already paid to do it.

Same goes for waiters/waitresses here.....they get paid to be nice and serve your food and if something goes wrong it's their job to fix it. Yeah they may be managing 10 tables but again....that's their job they get trained for it.

So if you want to tip waitress for exceptional good service then why not tip your local shop assistant who breaks their back carrying out your messages every day/week!

I've been a waitress over in America so I know what it's like to literally depend entirely on your tips to survive. The wages over there are laughable. But here they get proper wages so why tip?

I always tip in restaurants, more so out of habit but id the waiter is exceptionally good I will give a better tip.

I work in a chipper - I dont expect tips ever and usually I refuse it and just say thank you for the offer. Its very kind but its my job.

The odd time somebody will insist and it is lovely to be honest-doesnt matter how much, its a nice gesture !

You tip because you want to its no harm and i don't think its nesscerly an obligation but having worked in the food service trade its a sign that your doing your job well, its like a tap on th back because compliments are only face value, a complement and a fiver is real value.. It saying I appreciate the fact that you made a strong effort to delier my food you checked on me all the time and you're a value to the restaurant... and thank you for going to the extra effort...

Working in a super market well you there to do jobs, working in a restaurant your there not only to deliver the cooked food from the perky chefs out the back but your also there to make sure theta costumer has a nice experience and if the waitress makes a top dollar effort she should be tipped... any grump can walk over and chuck food on a tble some one who makes an effort to be nice to the costumer and help them there invaluable the restaurant and should be tipped it a sign of appreciation for doing a hard days work cause lets face waitress's had a tough job

Yeah in a supermarket you are there to do your regular jobs but plenty go out of their way to help you have a nice experience too. I'm talking about smaller supermarkets like local ones not Tescos and crap where they are not even allowed to talk to you.

Waitress work is tough going at times and so is working in a supermarket. They both provide a service, have to be constantly nice as pie even if the customer is a complete c*nt, both deserve appreciation for a hard days work :p
