I have a 50 year old small B&W photo of a friend that I want to copy and give
to him.Apart from just paper printing same, how do I make it presentable?

You get someone with a decent scanner to scan it, then bring the file to most any photolab.
That should give an acceptable copy.
If you want a really good copy, get someone who really knows what they're doing, or just bring it to a good photolab that can do the scanning and printing for you.

There are a few guys on here who could do the work for you including the printing.

have you tried contacting the photographer - he/she might have the original and could have digitized their works ?

Also - you do realise that its illegal to reproduce the image IF it is still the copyright of the owner/photographer ?

I had a guy do some work for me on an image of my girlfriends grandmother - the original photographer was a family neighbour - who passed away (grandmother was aged 5/6 in the photo and she's 91 now) .... couldn't locate the originals and following contact with the family of the photographer I was given permission to reproduce the images from prints which were scanned and reprinted a number of years ago.

(I was lucky the girlfriend has a good family tree history and her family's neighbours have similar)
