I look at people who like these movies the same way I'd look at people who eat shit, baffled and disgusted...

How often do you look at people that eat ****?

I quite enjoy these movies. They're absolutely terrible and only a DVD watch, but they're good fun.

I really wish they'd just stopped and rebooted this long long ago. The first one was actually pretty good, imo! Second one, I could let slide on a first watch... But after that, just bollocks.

I actually though #4 was a decent bit of fluff. Throwaway enjoyable crap.

Was #4 the one with Wesker and Chris?

    Yeah.

I enjoyed that despite myself. Many things annoyed me though, like the introduction of the plagas without any explanation, the fact that Wesker was so much like Agent Smith (which he is in the RE5 game yes but still!) and the way it just kinda ended outta nowhere... I was enjoying the whole prison bit too...

Yes well they are not written particularly well but I think they can be quite entertaining even if they are a world apart from the games and books.

The series is juvenile trash of the most entertaining variety. It's perfect sit back and turn your brain off fodder and while the lack of any real Resi vibe is disappointing they could have been a hell of a lot worse.

The funny thing, at first I would assume you're talking about the games. Let's be honest, they're not high-art themselves - even by the standards set in the medium - and if anything the series of games are as much famous for their convoluted plotlines & terrible dialogue, as they are for their horror. The first two games still occupy a place in my heart all the same though.

That said, the film franchise always seemed like a wasted opportunity; not because they deviated from the game's mythology, but that the films seemed so frequently cookie-cutter & half assed. I would call the 3rd one a guilty pleasure of mine, if only for the serious Mad Max vibes it gave off. Even if that simply proved how derivative the series is.

The first few games are great but the series quickly went off the rails and the recent announcements from Capcom about how the survival horror market isn't big enough to Resident Evil means that thins are likely to get much worse for the series. I expect Resi 6 to be a generic run and gun shooter as Capcom attempt to get some of that Call of Duty money.

How do you know they suck if you don't watch them?

I love how some posters will make thinly veiled insults aimed at other posters based on their enjoyment of certain films. Nothing wrong with sitting down with a beer and watching Resident Evil 4 on a slow Friday night. Film like all art is subjective, as such people can enjoy different types of film and if that was not the case then conversation on here would be very, very boring.

Could never really warm to the series alas, which is strange given that I love the games and zombie movies. Still, I'll end up watching this at some point regardless.

In fairness, much like a TV series, it's fair game if you decide after a couple of installments that a show / film franchise sucks, no?

It's like someone watching the first two Harry Potter films which are the weakest of the bunch and writing the entire series off. If someone said something like "I saw the first film and it was so bad it put me off the rest of them" then fair enough but to imply that the films are crap without watching them is a little unfair. Especially if you then imply that there is something wrong with people who enjoy them.

Ive watched 3 of them, first one sucked, second one was a disgrace and i promised myself id never pay for another but i did, it was a saturday afternoon hungover and my friend really wanted to see it as were big RE fans, i wanted the cheese nachos so gave in. And low and behold, another piece of ****.

So it was that point on in which i kept to my promise and glad i did as they have moved even further away from the source material. The quicker you guys stop paying for this complete horse **** the quicker they stop making them and with hollywoods trend they will likely sell it on and we could get a reboot thats worthy of the ****ing Resident Evil name..

There are very few films i mock people for liking, its this, Twilight and Transformers are what spring to mind, all terrible, **** writing, directing and cast. Movies like this which do well only lower the standards of movies to come.. but as long as you can leave your brain at the door and zone out to enjoy the movie, its all good right?

I prefer to be engrossed and on the edge of my seat with the action as opposed to bored stupid and pulling my hair out at the standard of what they are happy to deem entertainment.

So excuse me if im a little pissed off at the standard of cinema has gone, which is down the toilet.

The standard of cinema has not gone down in the least over the past decades. If anything it's the opposite. Every year sees the release of at least 100 films that are as good as anything ever made. This year alone we have had a number of great films and with films as diverse as The Raid, Kid With A Bike, The Hunter, The Deep Blue Sea opening in the coming months it really is a great time for cinema. Many of these films would never be made/distributed if it wasn't for films such as Transformers and Resident Evil making hundreds of millions.

Ok i havent seen those movies or heard of them, but im talking about these movies themselves, considering the money they do take in their standard alone should be getting better, not shitter and shitter as the sequels progress.

As when i look at blockbuster action movies, alls im seeing are more and more super hero movies, and they arent even trying to branch out much on them, were getting a spiderman reboot (yay same story different villan) and now im hearing rumours that after Nolan finishes with TDKR were gonna get yet another Batman reboot

remakes and reboots is all thats plaguing cinema these days which is just a cheap cop out...

The films you mentioned i havent heard of but will give them a look, thank you.

Only films on my radar for this year are batman and the hobbit.. Everything else im seeing is looking to be a similar standard to the movies i complained about in my previous post. And 2011 was a very very poor year for good cinema releases if ya ask me :(

2011 was a great year for cinema releases provided that you put in a little more effort than a trek to the local multiplex.

As for superhero films, reboots, remakes, adaptations, re-imagining. Well I have no problem with them once they don't simply try to do something a little different. I know that I'm going to head along to see the Avengers at some stage but I'm not exactly anticipating it as much as I should be. Same goes for Hunger Games, it's a film I'll watch eventually but when asked to go see it tonight I decided instead to crack open my Blu-Ray of battle Royale.

I know i can search real hard to find good films, but i am just talking about mainly the BIG cinema releases on the big screen. Watching films at home or in small screens like the ifi is all well and good. But i do like venturing to the big screens and loading up on popcorn and enjoying movies on the big screen. Its movies that reach those screens in which the standards are slipping, and they're the ones that make the big money.

The hunger games will just be another poorly acted piece of crap much like twilight that will probably get numerous sequels, sadly.

I may be pre-judging but sadly I know ill be right, as thats the way its been for a long while now..

I'm a big Resi fan but hated the last film. I'll see this at some point, prob when it comes to DVD. Really annoyed that Mila is still the focus of this franchise, she's had her story and it ended at the end of 3; they had to undo it at the start of 4 to continue it; awful, really aggravating stuff. Bring back Jill!!

Funny that pretty much every critic would disagree with you when it comes to the Hunger Games which is receiving pretty damn good reviews from all the major critics.

There are plenty of big cinema releases which are intelligent, well made and entertaining. Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Super 8, Captain America, Thor, Kung Fu Panda 2, Fast Five, Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, Puss in Boots, Tintin, Rango, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Hanna, Tree of Life, Final Destination 5, Contagion, Hugo, etc, etc. If anything 2011 was a vintage year for big budget Hollywood cinema and there are some fantastic looking films to be released over the coming months.

I have to side with Darko here. Cinema has always been full of crap, we just dont remember the crap films that shared the cinemas with the classics back in the 70s, like how people wont remember these Resi movies in 2030.

The first film disappointed me as it wasn't like the game, but I eventually warmed to it over a few viewings. The second one was virtually unwatchable, but I've only seen it once. The third film was the best in the series for my money, good fun and the ending was brilliant. I have to admit finding the fourth film a bit of a bore, though I must get round to watching it again. I'll certainly watch this when it comes to the cinema.

I'm intrigued to see how they manage to rope
    Michelle Rodriguez
    back into the story.

    Hi there,

I am bumping this thread after suffering through a screening of this today.

Please: this weekend, do not waste your money on this tripe, no matter how tempted you may be. There are several other much more wonderful, inventive films going on release, ranging from big budget / big idea sci-fi (Looper) to acclaimed Cold War dramas (Barbara) and a genuinely unclassifiable masterpiece (Holy Motors). Other interesting films on release you may or may not have yet gotten around to include Paranorman, Dredd, Anna Karenina, Killing Them Softly, Samsara, Shut Up and Play the Hits. Films of many types and genres.

Resident Evil 5 is absolute tripe. It does not need your support. It is a complete waste of your time, money and intelligence. I saw it for free and felt shortchanged and a tad insulted.

In the rarest of weeks, even the most general of multiplexes have a range of high quality viewing options. Watch them. As a viewer and paying customer, you have a choice. Do not watch Resident Evil: Retribution. Reject awfulness, and try to discourage this wretched film achieving the sequel it so desperately and cynically teases.

    Thanks for listening,
    A concerned patron.

    I agree.

It really made no sense at all and the acting was beyond terrible.

The icing on a very, very **** cake was that pretty much everything that happened in the film was completely pointless,
barring the absurd final 90 seconds
. Nothing that happened was of consequence. I could waste time complaining about the appalling acting, script, special effects and direction. But that the whole film was basically the equivalent of a filler song was the last straw.

    And also:
how the **** did it take so many films for someone to realise pulling the glowing red mind control device off Jill Valentine might be a good idea?

    Offensively bad filmmaking.

But what annoyed was it just didnt make any sense and the marketing for this film was very misleading.

I like the games and at least the other films made some attempt at a storyline to connect the action but this is a complete mess and doesn't make any sense whatsoever!

Time to put this donkey to sleep I think.

I want to know how these movies make so much money though. Seriously, I mean it. the previous films did nothing special - they weren't particularly exciting, scary, funny, memorable, anything. Hell they were rarely that heavily marketed. This in itself is hardly new in the annals of box-office success, but it's rare those type of sub-mediocre films spawn 4 sequels. Usually I can at least rationalise why a particular film might be a draw for audiences, even I'm not myself part of the likely demographic, but the Resident Evil movies leave me stumped.

Doubly baffling when you remember these are films based off a videogame - that's practically the mark of death for most adaptations. Yet we're at number 5 in and so far it's making lots of money, and possibly part-responsible for good films like Dredd tanking. I'm truly confused.

It's a tight spot. Can't morally complain if you don't see the movie, want to complain but don't want to see the movie! Seeing it for free is a kind of compromise :)

The funny thing is, the at-the-time mediocre original movie now seems a positive gem comparatively speaking. The films have gotten steadily worse since the original, but accelerated rapidly with Afterlife in my opinion. I actually liked this one more than Afterlife as it stood up much better on the merit of excellent visual effects than its predecessor. Some absolutely bizarre inconsistencies though (the best of the considerable bunch was
Leons severely broken hand impairing him in the final fight, then being used not moments later to first, lift Adas head, and second, suggestively rest on her inner thigh a short time later
), appalling acting in spots, and wafer thin character and plot development, pretty much make this a guilty pleasure but an extremely bad movie. They've entirely embraced the video game inspiration and striven to make the movies feel as much like a game as is possible - but it just doesn't work. The first movie showed there was potential in a franchise, but they took it too far - the basic premise isn't entirely unworkable, even in Retribution, but the execution is awful.

A reboot would be interesting, if they pursued the mansion story to full effect. Don't know why everything has to come from the Michael Bay school of film making these days.

TBH this is pretty much the only thing I want to see this week.

    :D .

It's a big dumb action film and sometimes that's all ya want . I thought the second was the best of the series and the last was the only one to let me down .

I'll post later in the thread to say what I thought of it after the viewing

Are Wesker and Michelle Rodriguez's characters not long dead and now in this movie :/

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,954 ✭✭✭Banjaxed82

How sh!t was this film. The cineworld unlimited card does takes the sting out of many a visit, thank god.

Paul WS Andersen is what I don't get. To spend 3 days writing the script, then anything from 6 months to a year in pre production...a couple of months in production...and 6 months to a year on post production..... for that piece of embarrassment.

To waste your time making films like that is just inexcusable. The lack of ambition surely says a lot about the man.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,225 ✭✭✭snausages

Why do people watch these movies? I haven't seen a single one of these yet it seems that a lot of the "fans" of the films have some sort of sadomasochistic relationship with the director that they keep going to see his films and complain about how horrible they are.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,566 ✭✭✭✭CastorTroy

Was Wesker really Max Headroom? Even when we saw him in person, he still looked fake.

And I was thinking as well that they just lifted ideas from elsewhere, especially the whole "She's still alive. I'm going to get her" bit.

    And what's the story with
the last scene being one of the first scenes we saw in the first teaser?

It was pretty much just going from one action scene to the next.

Though the beginning did get me thinking has anyone ever done a whole movie in rewind? :)

What a pile of tripe. I love action movies and I've played (and generally enjoyed) pretty much every incarnation of the games but this is pure drivel.

I thought the idea of the different "arenas" had potential and the action sequences with Alice were ok. But all the scenes, action or otherwise, with the extraction team were crap. The dialogue was awful, both the writing and acting.

    AVOID!

Oh jeez, was going to see this this week but with all the comments, I think I'll be giving it huge miss!!

Could this film be SO bad that it could gain some sort of cult status as one of those "movies that are so bad they can be funny", or is it just pure drivel???

See Dredd instead! Guaranteed good seating and you'll be thoroughly satisfied, money better spent on a great gritty 18s action comic-book film :)
