Where to stay along the way is the question... Berlin... and somewhere between there and Cherbourg

You have lots of options in Belgium and the Netherlands, countries about half the size of Ireland with much more big cities.

I would look at Utrecht in the Netherland and Hamburg in Germany.

Doing much the same as yourself except with Irish ferries and so landing in Cherbourg on the 5th instead of 6th. There are 4 of us and we plan to hit Berlin for two nights on way but not sure where to stop inbetween for the other two nights (arriving on the 9th in our host city Bydgoszcz).

There are savings to be made with both options and they really depend on what you consider importatn - nice stopovers with short drives vs getting there fast, very cheap v very comfortable, flexibility v price, campervan v static accommodation, match city v other cheaper location etc etc.

Having exhaustively considered all the options for travel and doing all the costings, as well as being more convenient, driving worked out a lot cheaper for us + the option of staying later should we get a good run and changing ferries was a factor (not an option with cheap flights) plus plus that we could bring what we wanted with us in the car rather than in one carry on bag and bring back what we wanted was a bonus. Works out for the entire trip all accom, ferries, fuel at €460 a man for 4 in an economical diesel saloon. Tolls, food, beer and tickets are not factored in there but we have 2 cat 1 tickets and one cat 3 tickets each at €137 + €142 + €38 and just in case 2 €54 tickets for the qf in kiev between the 4 of us....

But back to the question at hand where to stop between Cherbourg and Berlin....its Lille v Dusseldorf v Koln at the mo so according to the posters..., all three sound good, I stayed overnight in Aachen on an early june weekend 15 years ago and there was a great buzz in a square in the city centre as it is a student city, everyone out sitting in the square drinking beer so I'll add that to the mix...choices choices choices.....:)

im also driving to poznan arriving in cherbourg the 8th june. We are thinking colonge because its about half way or little less maybe frankfurt depends on what way we are feeling. Our ferry is in at 4.30 in the afternoon so want to get the most of the driving done the first day. and arrive in poznan early on the 9th. berlin would be about 13 to 14 hours drive so colonge would prob be the best bet if you planning on going out the night of the 8th.

hamburg would really be going out of your way as its north germany. great city but is def out of the way if your coming from cherbourg, be different if you were coming from rotherdam via harwich. Frankfurt has some great clubs and night life if you look around

Tanx 4 the advice. We arrive in cherbourg on the 6th of June. We are thinking of somewhere around Liege for our 1st stop. Then Berlin . Then onto Poznan
