I'm going out this weekend to get a supplement. I've used the Educohealth Mass Bulider before and thought it was pretty ok. But reading in here the last few weeks, I've seen lads talking about whey protein and how good it is. So which is better (if either!) Do I go to Educohealth and get another tub of Mass Builder or Holland & Barrett and get a tub of Whey Protein?

    Thanks lads.

What are you goals (I assume muscle gain to the mass gainer) and what's your diet like?

Also what's in the educohealth product, how big is it and how much is it?

My goals are basically to get bigger. I'm 6' 4", 16 stone. I'm working out for 2 hours, twice a week, doing the Convict Conditioning program twice a week, boxing on a Wednesday night, kick boxing on a Friday night and run 6-8km once a week. My diet is "ok", I eat brown rice, fish, beef, porridge, chicken...but I eat junk some nights too, A chinese or chipper once a week. But I really just want to "bulk up" a bit.

The Educohealth product is a 1.5kg tub for €42. To quote the tub, it's "Casein Protein blend with stacked Carbohydrates, BCAA's, Creatine and Chromium"

Better to list out the diet in detail as a lot of times it's easier to fix the diet then just add supplements

    Yeah, true enough, sorry.....

Breakfast: Bowl of porridge (or Weetabix) and a banana. Some days this would be 5/6 boiled eggs and toast.

Lunch: Scrambled eggs (made with 7/8 eggs) and toast. (Brown bread) Some days, tuna sandwiches.

Dinner: Varies - some days, 3 chicken fillets and brown rice. or potatoes and chicken kiev, or homemade chips and 2 pieces of cod

Throughout the evening, I snack on pears and bananas or nibble on the mixed nuts & raisins from Tesco.

At the weekend, this goes to sh!te, I'll have a fry up on a Saturday morning, usually about 8 sausages, 3 or 4 fried eggs, 2 waffles, beans and 4 or 5 rashers. Lunch is skipped due to hectic weekends but I'll have a Chinese in the evening. Sunday is similar...:o

If you want to put on weight you'll need to get a certain amount of calories in your diet with a certain proportion of that from protein. You should try and get these form real food, but for whatever reason if you can't manage this then you can use supplements to make up the difference

If you're getting enough calories over all, and just need more protein, go for the whey. If you're short of calories, go for the weight gainer. Weight gainers are a combination of protein and carbohydrates, they have more calories per serving than whey, but if you don't need those calories they'll just get stored as fat. Also you'll be getting less protein by weight, so it's a waste if all you are looking for is protein.

I'd go with the protein, much better value than any weight gainer, they are usually filled with crap anyway. You could make your own any way. Here's a good one...
    2 scoops whey
    1 tablespoon of peanut butter
    2 weetabix
    1/2 banana
    1/2 pint of milk
    1/2 pint of water
Chuck it all in a blender(better off making a double dose and putting 1 in the fridge for later) it tastes great too and 1 serving has roughly 650 cals
