Chinese Chips

I've heard from quite a few people that chips from a Chinese takeaway are "mank" (I think that's bad - judging from the expressions on their faces when they say it. "Massive" seems to mean "fantastic" instead of "of a very large size"). This seems to be a commonly held opinion. I've sampled them myself and agree they are not the best, but surely some people like them. Maybe even prefer them? What do you AH'ers think?

To be honest, I don't know why anyone would get chips with a Chinese dish when egg-fried rice is so much nicer and goes so much better with the food.

The only place you should order chips from is a chipper. Anyone who orders chips from a Chinese/Indian/etc are eejits.

I suppose two things come into play...
Firstly some take-aways are just mank, Chinese/Italian/Indian makes no difference if they're mank that's it...
Secondly a top notch Chinese style take-away probably have little/no interest in cooking or serving chips and would probably rather not do it at all...

Definitely I have rarely sampled food in Ireland similar to that served in China but some of the better restaurants do very well...

TBH I'm not a fan of their chips at all.

My Problem though is what the hell happened to Irish Fish&CHips Shops ?

You can't get decent chips anymore anywhere. I get the suspicion that the chip shops are trying to cook way more chips than they should at once or else are using inferior oil compared to the old days.

Reason being any chips I've bought from any chipper is usually 50% solid in the middle and uncooked.

Used to love Irish Chippers, hate them now.

I had chips before in a Chinese, but it ended up badly!

I got thrown out for trying defend myself and the o/h, I asked for chips and three Chinese waiter then threatened to hurt me!

He said in reply to my request for chips......

I usually order chips because they come free with the dish (had a bad experience with rice) I personally prefer them to chips from the chippers. From my local Chinese anyways, they're much drier and don't seem as greasy as chips from the chippers!

For a start, the vast majority of Chinese takeaways are filth. Whatever about the vast majority of what they sell not being in any way genuinely authentic Chinese dishes, in Ireland people often order chips and curries. Which couldn't be any less Chinese.

Buy a decent Chinese cookbook and try cooking some authentic dishes yourself. Bleedin' delish man.

Chinese Chips are frozen chips which are half cooked left sitting in a tray until they are ordered. Maybe thats why they are so hit and miss.

I've a facebook friend who's constantly posting that they're having Chinese curry, chips and rice, sometimes a couple of times a week it seems, and, well, they ain't skinny!

I'm sure having rice and chips together occasionally isn't so bad, but having both just seems redundant, like having mashed potatoes and chips with your dinner.

I guess it's because most people in Ireland get curry at the Chinese, and they're used to having curry chips. I've never had Chinese chips as I've never had curry from a Chinese: I like to try different things, and I don't think the cooks would be too passionate about making curry and chips, so I'd expect them to be of a lower standard than the other food.

The reason chips from a Chinese takeaway don't taste as good is because they are frozen chips. Chips from a chipper are made using freshly cut potatoes. A Chinese place generally won't sell as much chips as a chipper so they can't afford to have buckets of freshly cut potatoes sitting around going bad.

Chinese chips are nice as long as you don't eat them dry. Dip them in curry sauce or something and they're grand.

I'm generally a fan of Indian food over Chinese, but......

The best, friendliest, goddam tastiest Chinese/Asian restaurant in Ireland has to be Victoria gardens in Johnstown/Naas in my humble opinion.
Really authentic grub, and with dishes as diverse as frogs legs, salt and chilli quail, jumbo unshelled prawns, there its something for everyone on that menu!

Anyone whose ever had the pleasure of dining here will testify to this fact!

My local Chink buys their chips in Dunnes by the box load. A 1.5kg bag is around €1.50 so its no wonder the portions are "massive". That said they are sh1te. As are the bag of prawn crackers they give you free if you spend over a thousand yo yo's on food.

I am one of those freaks who gets Chinese chips with their order am i love them. Rice doesnt agree with me and not a fan of noodles so not really left with much option when ordering.

the problem with chinese food in ireland is that most of it is just frozen stuff reheated in a microwave when ordered.

Real chinese food (the stuff they themselves eat) is much nicer than the crap they sell to us.

this is why i prefer indian food and most of that is actually cooked fresh as indian food doesnt reheat well.
