OK now this thread is probably going to cause a heated debate sure what the heck , ok when i used to go to mass as a child every week a basket would be passed around and the little old dears would take out their coin purses and drop in some coins , but the church is rolling on money , tonnes of it , and every week we are asked for more for the sick and retired priests of the parish , I ask why ? why must the cost of a religion be pushed upon the followers when the religion itself worships a man who aperently fed thousand with a couple of bits of bread and fish! .

The Priests of the Parish live off the collection plate. Each diocese is supposed to be self sufficient and for the large part they don't recieve any outside assistence.

Ya dont have to give if ya dont want to, you dont even have to go to mass if ya dont want to.

Like most things in life you have a choice, choose not to give, simples.

Because how else would a religion be funded except by its followers?

You don't want the state footing the bill, do you?

Maybe priests could earn money doing a little bit of side-business, like selling indulgences like in the good old days.

In the past each parish used to fund themselves but sure you have rural and urban, rich and poor areas

All goes to the diocese now to be split up

They don't get outside funding OP, the diocese has to fund itself

In the old days, the weekly donations from each household were read out by the priest from the pulpit!

This soft happy clappy 21st century society really doesnt suit the church. They knew how to get things done in the past!

Come to think of it we'd a parish priest back in the 90s who doubled as a cattle dealer. Yer man was running a massive beef operation on rented land. No harm in it I suppose but I always found it odd.

Why do you have to put money in.?
Why can't you take a fistful out and tell the collector that your family needs it more than the corpulant priest.?

Don't give it OP, it'll only end up 'resting' in an account. ;)

Be thankful there is not a church tax, over here you pay 8% or 9% of your income tax to have the privilege of declaring yourself a member!

I know that what im asking is why ? surely the money that the Vatican has stacked up could be put to use

I suppose when you consider the sheer number of Catholic parishes and organisations around the world it would be unrealistic for the Vatican to financially support them all.

But the reason they're not lacking in funds is because of the donations!

People could stop donating and the church would probably survive for a while, but pretty soon they'd have to start asking for donations again.

yeah thats very true , but i suppose the money will remain resting in their accounts

If people are followers of a religion and feel they want to contribute to it financially then good luck to them.

The Vatican are too busy donating all their billions to charity and humanitarian causes.

    Oh wait..

but would as many people donate if the contributions werent asked for infront of the whole parish ?
