Household charge to Crumlin instead.

Ray D'Arsey had a guest caller on named Sandra who proposed the idea to re-direct the €100 payment for the household charge and put it towards funding the €80m extension planned for Crumlin children's hospital.

Ray Darsey's abbreviated explanation of Sandra's plan.
Because Crumlin are fund raising to rebuild their oncology and cardiac units people re-direct their €100 household charge to Crumlin.

So AH what do we think? Personally I think It's an excellent idea. It's possible I may listen to his show t'morrow to see if this story will progress.

I'm not registering or paying the household charge but I would absolutely pay it if it was going to be sent directly to Crumlin Children's Hospital.

Good luck getting the government to agree to that.

They'd rather see the money in their back pockets then save Crumlin Children's Hospital.

Noble idea all the same. Would like to see it go through.

The majority of people jumping on the don't pay bandwagon, just don't want to pay, they have no political or philosophical objection, it's just the opportunity to dodge a bill that no one wants to pay. (I can sympathise with that, i don't want to pay either) They aren't going to pay it to someone else to prove a point.
There was nothing stopping all these hundreds of thousands of people sending €100 to crumlin hospital before, yet they quite obviously didn't!

Send €100 to crumlin hospital so. That way you know they'll get it, you aren't going to pay the tax anyway.

He had Fine Gael TD Regina Doherty on explining why the chilerden should suffer so we can pay back the €3.1bn that was robbed from us to pay Anglos debts.

I must say she sounded like a reasonable person with a sound mind who really understands what politics is all about. Thank you to everyone who voted for her.

We don't need Crumlin Children's Hospital extended, we need a National Children's Hospital built.

    Won't work :(

We cant pick and chose where our taxes go.
I'd like all my taxes to go towards Blanchardstown hospital instead - but it won't happen

There is no way in hell these people not paying the household charge are going to give €100 to a hospital. No way. The entire Sandra thing is a load of ****e. If people wanted to give €100 to the hospital they already could have.

Ray D'arcy should have Sandra in for a regular slot, where she can impart her alternative wisdom on a range of Government policies.

It's a nice gesture in theory but utterly ridiculous in practice.

If taxpayers got to choose what our taxes were spent on, we'd have good hospitals, good schools, good parks and good roads but there would be no social welfare, no public transport, little or no foreign investment (and therefore no jobs), no support for homeless people, old people or severely impoverished people and we would definitely not have any semblence of decent emergency services.

not going to happen really. its just a shame the mater site plans for a new childrens hospital couldn't get the go ahead. most people already give money to crumlin anyway through fundraising, charity events etc.

Personally I think people should use the household charge to buy me a Ferrari. I've feck all use for a childrens hospital, a Ferrari would be way more fun, and only cost a fraction of the price.

I for one wont be paying the house hold charge but i can say id gladly donate the €100 to Crumlins Childrens hospital.
Im not paying for some thing im already paying for and i own my home out right so why should i pay for servces i have already and continue to pay for.

Brilliant idea if the government donated the money to the right cause and not bail out the greedy bankers/builders/TDs.

It could work. I don't get the objection people are making. If Crumlin get €80m they will build a new wing. If the government get €160m in fees from the household charge they will piss it up against the wall.

Give proper care to more Children ✔

Just thought it might be helpful to remind ourselves what the household charge is for. It's for services we all need and use. Crumlin desperately needs money also - separate issue IMO.

The Household Charge is an annual charge introduced by the Local Government (Household Charge) Act 2011 which is payable by owners of residential property. It is a matter for owners of residential properties to register and pay the Household Charge on or after the 1st of January 2012.

The EU/IMF Programme of Financial Support for Ireland commits the Government to the introduction of a property tax for 2012. We are one of the last countries in Europe that does not fund local services through local property-based charges.

These services are essential to your community. They include: fire and emergency services; maintenance and cleaning of streets; planning and development; public parks; street lighting; libraries; open spaces and leisure amenities. These facilities benefit everyone.

A property tax, requiring a comprehensive property valuation system, would take time to introduce and accordingly, to meet the requirements in the EU/IMF Programme, the Government has decided to introduce a Household Charge in 2012.The Household Charge is an interim measure only and a comprehensive and equitable valuation-based property tax will be introduced as soon as possible.

I accept that also, but even if there was never any bailout or dodgy bondholder payouts and so on, the same people would still be moaning and trying to get out of paying. I bet the VAST majority of these people also had a problem with bin charges/ water rates and so on. We all would like these things for free, myself included, unfortunately the world doesn't work like that.

I will also be tuning in tomorrow. This thing could build some momentum and it'll be interesting to see how it progresses. In fairness to the woman involved she spoke very clearly and passionately about it even when being belittled by the TD that came on.

Likewise. We don't have a local park, library, swimming pool etc, we don't have street lighting, we barely have a decent road to drive on.
I had no intention of paying the household charge , and yes, I had no notion of giving the €100 to charity either...but, I would give it to crumlin to prove a point to the government.

I already pay a monthly donation to Crumlin Hospital and I am not one of the people that are refusing to pay the household charge just to avoid paying a bill.

I pay all my bills/taxes and if I thought for one second, the money raised by the household charge was actually going to be used to fund the local authorities and the local amenities/services, then I would pay it. But it's not. The local authorities have actually had their budgets cut this year so this household charge is going into a big black hole, along with all the taxes I pay, so for me - this household charge is one tax too many.

I also resent the fact that it's the same charge whether you're living in a mansion or a one bedroomed apartment, just because the government can't be arsed to work out a fair way of calculating this tax by basing it on the value/size of your property. Lazy lazy lazy.

At least if it was going to Crumlin, I'd know there was an actual point in paying it and would much prefer to see the government raise money to help the sick children of Ireland instead of giving it to banks who gambled recklessly in the past.

that's utter tripe, crumlin today....re-directing the Universal social charge to the IRA next....

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,915 ✭✭✭MungBean

I think we need to divide the state, let FG/Labour run the Republic of Ireland into the ground and all the people who'd rather their money go towards public services instead of paying back all this bullshít bank debt set up their own independent state. Call it New Ireland and set it up somewhere inconspicuous out west.

Any civil war would be over pretty quick I'd say. One man with a pellet gun on the main road would successfully defend our borders. Start our own currency called the Pellet in honour of the brave man who won us our freedom. Print plenty of Pellets, backed up by gold we got with the euro's we dumped on the sly before the revolution.

Any trouble makers and scroungers could be got rid of easily by denying them a New Ireland passport and putting them on the bus to Roscommon.

Twould be a glorious new land of peace and prosperity for all involved.

How exactly is that money going into their back pockets? Don't be talking sh*t FFS.

This is typical Joe Duffy type bullsh*t. The money is needed for a debt we owe. It wouldn't be needed at all if we weren't broke. How much money was in people's pockets in this country during late 90's to 2006? How many people donated €100 to anything, let alone a Children's Hospital? Very, very few. Everyone's f*cking Robin Hood now the place is bankrupt.

Bottom line is it wont happen, when you think how much money is raised in a local community fundraising like for a swimming pool they are never going to raise that amount for the Crumlin hospital, then you are going to get the others i will never use that why should i pay, some that dont have the money cant pay, others that have too much money wont pay.

    That sounds like a bargain!

€100 for all the public services :D

I presume that means the govt will start organising to collect our household waste again for free.... Will I never again have to pay my yearly subscription to get the green area around my estate landscaped etc? I will no longer face a charge if I have to call the ambulance or fire service out?
I presume tolled roads will be gotten rid off now also, oh, and just like up north, the doctor won't charge me when I take ill again?

    Phew.........

    That's a relief.........

because it would be absolutely scandalous if we were expected to pay property tax, akin to rates in the north, but still be expected to pay for all these things on top of any charge........

    Oh, wait............

Interesting article by Martina Devlin in indo - she makes some very compelling points:

But financing libraries, parks and swimming pools is what our existing taxes are meant to do. So the strategy seems to be for taxpayers to fork out twice over for the same facilities -- unless existing taxes are no longer intended for communal amenities. Instead, we must presume they are earmarked for feeding the bank bailout and bridging the deficit.

Here's an alternative. The Government expects to raise €160m from the household charge in 2012. That figure could be generated elsewhere. Some favour removing property reliefs. I'd propose the following steps: (a) cancel cap-busting salaries for special advisers; (b) restrict each minister to one special adviser; (c) scrap unvouched expenses for politicians. That should make a start on plugging the gap.

Did she not also make the point that outside of banks or any other stuff like that, the country is costing something like 15 or 20b a year more to run than whats raised by taxes?

Thats day to day stuff like schools, hospitals, social welfare, civil servant salaries etc etc.

But sure a bit of "rabble rablle, banks, bonholders, IMF, FF, FG rabble rabble" is better.

    Awful, awful explanation.

    Priotities:
    TOP:
-The continuation of the services provided by councils - household charge
    - The provision of a National Children's hospital. The matter site would be disasterous. IMO somewhere on the outskirts of the m50 so it's easily accesible to everyone - the funds for this have already been provided.
