How come all murderers are portayed as men in films?

Freedie Kruger, Michael Myers, Hannibal, Jason from Friday the 13th, etc, which are the serious ones. Then much more fictionized movies, Arnold Scharzenneger as the Terminator, ,etc. The movies where a fella is just shooting up the scene, not as much psychological.

I was thinking the other day and realized I actually thought that there could be hardly any female murderers. In the same way as people think rape is vast majority done by men, I unearthed that I thought the same with murder. My preconceptions are more than likely very wrong, but that is what I got from the films.

    Kind of sexist ain't it?

Well yes, but you have to admit that movies portraying a women as the major killer in the film is really in the minority.

Plus the Terminator is a mindless shoot em up, the first movies I highlighted are really psychological thrillers, a lot more personal. They put across the thought of murder happening on a more personal level.

They portray the killers as a real person and not just a person with a big gun, a bulletproof vest and heading off to the shooting range. (With kinky catch phrases, Hasta La Vista Baby :D)

Because most murderers are men. I believe only 10% of all killers are women? That mightn't be exact but it is close

Most women stick to boiling bunnies or skinning Dalmatians.

Only 10% of murders are commited by women, but the other 90% are commited because of them..lol:D

The film Monster with Charlize Theron.

The Mist with Marcia Gay Harden.

    Misery with Kathy Bates.

That's 3 off the top of my head.

Men do actually commit more murder than women. Pretty much all studies everywhere bear that out.

But regardless of that fact there are lots of female murderers in lots of films. Off the top of my head, Basic Instinct, The Hand That Rocks The Cradle, Misery, Species, La Femme Nikita, Thelma and Louise, Audition, and I think you already mentioned Friday 13th... I'm sure there's lots more.

Sexist? Give it a rest will ye?

I don't think it's sexist anyway and the fact that it's rarer to see it probably gives it a little more impact when it is done.

It could be more easily argued that sports movies are more sexist because they rarely have female leads, honourable mention to where the female goalie comes off the bench to save the penalty for team U.S.A in the mighty ducks 2.

thats because in reality, more men are serial killers. a female serial killer is incredibly rare. something like 10 -15% of serial killers are women, even at that they tend to use less aggressive methods of killing, or do it because their partner is a killer.

it isn't sexist - its biological, testosterone is a male hormone and one linked with aggression, amongst other behaviours.

on a side note, it goes beyond serial killing. when you look at wars its predominantly men killing men.

I dunno about you lot, but I, for one, am shocked to discover that the on average larger, stronger, more aggressive is responsible for the most murders.

    SHOCKED!

Because male serial killers are rare, women serial killers are even rarer.

Yup ... in that the men who make the kind of movies you're referring to and the men who like to watch them don't believe that women are capable of the same kind of violence as the men that are portrayed in them ... sexist pigs. :D

I don't know that murderers accounting for the vast majority of murderers really has that much to do with murderers in films being male. I mean yes it's probably partially like that because it's true to life, but the 'hero' in a film is typically male also. I think it's like this because it's more attractive to see in a film. women are emotional, care-givers in roles and so i don't think film makers find it easy to mess with that and succeed in making a good film.

...Because they kept their women chained to the kitchen sink, bare foot and pregnant - so they couldn't do similar? :D

...O' wait, you mean all men in general - not just the men in the said films?

Dunno, I'll ask the wife. She's busy painting the walls here.

Because they'd be boring to watch. Can you imagine instead of Patrick Bateman, there was a Patricia Bateman?

Imagine if a woman said this:

My name is Patricia Bateman. I'm 27 years old. I believe in taking care of myself and a balanced diet and rigorous exercise routine. In the morning if my face is a little puffy I'll put on an ice pack while doing stomach crunches. I can do 1000 now. After I remove the ice pack I use a deep pore cleanser lotion. In the shower I use a water activated gel cleanser, then a honey almond body scrub, and on the face an exfoliating gel scrub. Then I apply an herb-mint facial mask which I leave on for 10 minutes while I prepare the rest of my routine. I always use an after shave lotion with little or no alcohol, because alcohol dries your face out and makes you look older. Then moisturizer, then an anti-aging eye balm followed by a final moisturizing protective lotion.

I'd be clawing my eyes with boredom whereas when Christian Bale says it sounds

    Friday the 13th
    Hostel
    Addams Family Values
    Scream 2
    Scream 4
    Misery
    Basic Instinct
    Serial Mom
half of all James Bond movies
    half of the Saw movies
    Monster
    Fatal Attraction
So I Married an Axe Murderer
    American Psycho 2
    Psycho 2
    Poison Ivy
    Wild Things
    La Femme Nikita
    Heavenly Creatures
    Kill Bill
    Kick Ass
    Monster
    Urban Legend
    Natural Born Killers

A better question would be, why are most animals in movies able to talk?

Not really the exceptions, there are several horror films where the hero is a female.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 350 ✭✭Roadtrippin

I agree with earlier posts which said that statistics are pretty clear on this matter... It is not sexist to say that the majority of murders are committed by men because it is a fact. It is a known fact that the majority of serial killers were and are male. You can blame biology for that if you like!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,280 ✭✭✭✭Eric Cartman

women dont murder. They just torture men for years , taking all their money, depriving them of sex and making them listen to utter drivel until eventually they die, they call this 'marraige'
