If your in Dublin, I hear heroin is quite popular, you could try that instead.

Knitting or crocheting seems to be all the rage these days... especially on Paddys day with green wool.

Seriously though, if you have a backyard/balcony, I would suggest a BBQ if the weather holds up :) If you don't have one, get a disposable one!

If you are not drinking, i'd recommend staying at home. The country will be full of pissed up ejits.

Go to the Off-Licence instead! Knacker drinking (or just normal drinking if your in Dublin) is what St Patrick's day is all about

Stay indoors and wait until it all blows over.

    Yes, seriously this.

The cities and towns will be full of messy drunken cúnts who will cause trouble and wreak havoc. Every knacker in Dublin heads into the city centre and causes a mess.

It's not worth it and I genuinely feel terrible for any tourist coming here to enjoy "St.Pattys Day".

you're picking a seriously bad day to want to do something and not drink. there's a few things on though - look here.

stay at home, parade is rubbish and it will just be drunken people falling around all day/night

5k race through city centre on the 18th is good, did it last year but can't this year otherwise would defo do it.

    Ridiculous.

I know plenty of foreigners who make it to Dublin every year for St. Patrick's weekend because they enjoy it so much.

I head to Dublin most years too to mingle with them and enjoy the craic it has to bring. Stop generalising. Not everyone feels the need to 'wreak havoc' after a few drinks ffs.

Wait until people get drunk then beat/rob them. It's all the rage in Dublin I hear.

Yeah well anywhere, even when it's crawling with drunken knacker kids in the middle of the afternoon, beats Dundalk, doesn't it? I'd say it comes across as a sophisticated metropolitan utopia in comparison to the stuff that does down in your neck of the woods.

Dublin during Paddy's day is an absolute nightmare. The pubs are to the brim, the publicans rip everyone off and outside the pubs are drunks making a mess of themselves and everything around them.

Ah the old slag where I'm from line now.

You best be sure to stay indoors and lock up tight for the long weekend so you don't dare mix with the great unwashed out having a good time.

Just what this country needs - more snobs.

Yeah 'cause the country really needs a day where people, including children, go into the city centers and towns and get out of control drunk, causing trouble and damage?

Having a good time, my arse. You have people who go to the parade and are hugely disappointed, and people who go into pubs and get out of their face drunk and either forget what happened (therefore, by default and until proven otherwise, a great night apparently), cause themselves or others problems or leave a mess for someone else to clear up.

Typical oul OIreland though, right? If you don't get off your face drunk or criticize others for doing so, you're a killjoy, of course! I mean I've lived in Dublin all my life, I know what the city center is like on Patrick's day and yet I've some clown from down the country telling me I should like the behaviour that takes place there or else I'm a snob.

Anyway, again, of course it seems good to you, you're from Dundalk.

Saturday is the opening qualifying round of this year's Formula 1 season with the Australian GP. Stay at home and watch that instead.
Also you'ld wanna wake up early on Sunday to catch the race at 6am if you wanna watch it live, which you should cuz it's gonna be a cracker!

Time much better spent than going into town which is gonna be full of drunk people stumbling around...

club finals in croke park, then find a decent place just outside the city centre for the rugby in the evening.
i'm a non drinker, and would avoid the city centre except for the night before when it's good craic. it's seriously messy in the few hours after the parade too. all the scummers are drinking on the streets, and the tourists seem to like packing themselves into temple bar.
there's usually some stuff on at merrion square too.

I sat at home all day St. Paddy's day last year and watched movies. Best St. Paddy's day ever!

Yea because the only possible outcome from having a few beers on Paddy's day is to get into a mess and remember nothing.

Maybe it's you who needs to dial down the drinking if that's your only experience and stop slating the rest of us who know how to enjoy themselves without going too far.

But don't let me get in the way of a sweeping generalisation. You know, with me being from Dundalk and all - sure what could I possibly know, I'm automatically not worthy eh?

Is there anything for kids to do on paddys day apart from the parade. Mine don't want to go but want to do something. We're going to imaginosity on Friday. Im looking for things on northside and outskirts Dublin

Well, if you're new to the country and don't yet have a job, you could spend the day sending out CVs to companies who won't respond. Alternatively, burning down the Central Bank doesn't have to involve alcohol and would be loads of fun.

First someone looked down their nose at me enjoying a few pints and now you want to rip into Formula 1?

I third these two. In fact you would be following the age old tradition St Patrick started, he drove the snakes out of Ireland, don't ya know. (probably cos he got bored watching the parade too)

Go to a parade, festival/concert. Go to the park or the beach if it a nice day otherwise drink non alcoholic beverages in a pub and perhaps watch the rugby match if you into rugby!
