What would one consume when following a paleo ish template diet when doing HIIT exercises? I could allow for porridge in small amounts and carbs. I'd imagine some carbohydrates and protein an hour or so beforehand and afterwards, some simple carbohydrates to replenish the glycogen stores with protein for muscle retaining?

Trial and error is your best bet, keep a diary for one week eating porridge in small amounts and carbs. Second week do strict paleo and see how you feel at the end of each week.

From my own experience when I do strict paleo my training and recovery is a lot better that when I’m not following paleo. Training consists of kickboxing (cardio and conditioning) and crossfit (strength, metcons, amrap’s).

But no two of us are the same what works best for you only you can tell.

    Cheers

Agreed recovery is better on Paleo for me, I just assumed this was linked to the increased fat and protein, but do you not find you tire quicker while training on strict paleo?

first and part of the second week starting can be a struggle, its like the body is in detox mode but after that lifts and all aspects of training are improved.

    Sweet potatoes. Simples.

You won't produce energy glycolyticly without an adequate supply of glycogen.

Well... you will, but not very well or for sustained periods of time. If you're pushing the HIIT stuff hard you need carbs.
