Stuff you used to believe.......

As a follow on from the "is this right" thread, I thought this would be a useful exercise in dispelling a few myths and restoring some much needed humility to this particular forum. So here goes:

I actually used to believe, many years ago mind you, that my muscle was constantly eating itself and that if I didn't provide it with a steady stream of amino acids every 2 to 3 hours (very important), I would shrivel up like a prune.

This gave rise to such comical situations as the trustee 'protein shake on the bedside table' routine where I would quite often disturb my sleep in order to consume the obligatory 30g that the body was only capable of processing at each sitting. Not to mention the need to carry BCAAs in my backpack in a public place, just in case I was caught short.

I learned most of this stuff from seasoned bodybuilders and it does seem that that is where a lot of this stuff originates.

Anyone else got any examples, diet or exercise related?

Like a lot of people (I assume) my original goal was to 'turn fat into muscle' in some kind of devine water to wine transformation.

It's funny, I could have sworn I said in the op that I was trying to restore some humility to this cynical forum. Failed at the first hurdle.....

Funny you should say that. I saw a lad of about 16 in the gym recently making up a protein shake from a small plastic bag of powder while sitting on the bench about to lift. He then proceeded to take sips between lifts, just to make sure it was going straight to his muscles :D

I used to think that physical activity had a far higher impact on my energy balance than diet.

Used to think that getting a six pack was all about crunches and that running on a treadmill was all I needed to train my legs. First time squatting under a barbell really changed my mind about leg training...

I used to believe getting bigger was the be-all and end-all of fitness, and anything else was bollocks.

It works for some people, but I've completely changed my tune - much prefer the athletic, functional, all-round side of fitness these days.

Also used to think Starting Strength & GOMAD were unquestionable to everybody, and that cardio always had to be running / cross-trainer and therefore boring.

Pasta, wheat, rice and bread were all grand foods to eat, and part of a healthy diet.

Just goes to show that over time, knowledge and trends in fitness change, and it's up to each person to filter out the ****e and make their own minds up on what works for them with regards enjoyment and results.

I wish he had to be honest. Took my mind off the game for a solid 3mins. Felt like I got nothing out of my run that day :(

Eating fat was unhealthy and fit people ran for ages.

Learned I was wrong the hard way:(

And all instructors know what they're talking about.
And dietitians know what they're talking about.

    I still think this.
