A hernia & the gym?

Apologies if this is a breach of the forum charter...

While I was getting back into my exercise routine following a 2 month lay-off undergoing sports therapy treatment on an old shoulder injury (supraspinatus tear), my GP has now diagnosed a small hernia near my bellybutton.

GP advises to take it easy with any weight training for 4 - 6 weeks to see if things improve - it's not large enough to warrant a surgical consult.

While I have a Sports Therapist designing a training programme, it looks like squats, deadlifts, etc are most likely off the menu for good. The hernia, as it is now, is not at all painful but it's bloody uncomfortable so I don't know if cardio classes (spin, circuits) are off the menu too. Normally I'd be in the gym 6 days a week.

Anybody here experience a hernia and how did it affect your exercise routine? Did you have to change your programme a lot, did wearing a belt help, did going to the gym make the hernia worse?

    Any replies appreciated, thanks.

Inguinal hernia 5 years ago (so different location and not a small tear either), and yes, deep squats and intrathoracic stressors would be ill advised during repair time!

I had the plastic mesh gubbins put in which then intertwines with the muscle and my repair was very successful. No issues since.

Getting back into weights/exercise afterwards was quite a psychological challenge (in fact even coughing or sneezing had me in fear for my innards for quite some time).

    .

I'm afraid it is. The only advice anyone can give you here is to follow doctors orders.
