Maria McCambridge (Letterkenny AC) dominated the women’s race, winning in a personal best of 54:48, a course record. This was a huge morale boost for McCambridge who runs in the Rome marathon in a fortnight.

"I am thrilled with the time and the performance tells me that I am in with a chance of achieving the Olympic A qualifying standard for the marathon in Rome," McCambridge said.

Running 54:48 in Ballycotton right at the end of marathon training puts her in great shape for running under 2:37. That should be the third woman marathon qualified. Who knows, might yet be a selection dilemma.

She definitely has it in her.. Hopefully she runs a smart race and gets the time.
    Best of luck to her!!

I would loooove for her to make the qualifying time. The work she puts in is phenomenal, and if it wasn't for the addition to the family last year, I think she'd already be on the squad. I'll be looking out with interest for the results from Rome

2 women already qualified and hopefully mccambridge will be number 3. Are there any other women with a realistic chance of running the A time.

Any one any info on the Rome course. I think I remember somebody telling me it was tought enough with sections over cobbles. Could be mistaken though.

Caitriona Jennings is running Rotterdam and will most likely also get the standard...

Yes some cobbles alright and you can see some from about 5 mins in here. Rome
Thought it was an unusual choice of marathon myself

Has she ran any warm up races? I knew she was knocking on the door but thought she was still a bit away from the qualifying time. best of luck to her anyway.

Could be a few reasons for running this one, would depend on what was on offer in regards to pacers. Was talking to one elite before who picked one marathon over another because the even splits been run by elites the year before in one race, compared to some positive splits in another.
    Really hope she gets it.

Also drinks support. I know a fellow was going for 2:20 so advised him Berlin was very fast but he said he wasn't fast enough to get to have his own drinks on the tables there. So preferred to look for a less headline course where he could have his own drinks there for him.

Yep, I know Sean Connolly didnt even get his own drinks in Rotterdam last year his coach had to cycle to points on the course to get to him.

I dont know about that. I'd bet my house on mccambridge qualifying but I really dont think Jennings is at the same level as mc cambridge, byrne and hutchinson.

Hope all goes well for Maria McCambridge in Rome on 18th, and me too of course though I'll be a few hours after her!

I wonder is there another consideration......If things dont work out for Rome, illness, unusually hot day etc.....there may be time for one more shot. i.e Rotterdam.

Best of luck to her, she seems to be in well under 2:35 form and deserves it.

Yeah was thinking the same myself.

I think if she does not make it this time, she won't make it at all. That said, I was very impressed with how she ran down in Enniscorthy off what I would reckon is high mileage training for the marathon.

I fully expect her to make it, I think she is a class act. She will have learnt a lot from her experience in Dublin. I take the point over the hot weather but hopefully that will not materialise.

She is in good form 54:48 (ish) down in Ballycotton plus a very good run in Enniscorthy. Fingers crossed she will deliver.

Lizzie Lee ran 57:17 in Ballycotton weekend before last. Even with the specificity associated with training for a marathon instead of a 10 mile race, they'd both seem to be a little behind the curve for hitting that qualification time, wouldn't they?

    From McMillan for McCambridge's times...
    57:34 indicates a 2:41:14 Marathon
54:48 a couple of weeks previous would indicate 2:33:29.

Looks to me like it all depends on the day, a good run and she could well be in with a chance, but she'll need everything to fall in to place.
Good luck to her, hope she can do it.

However, I can't see a 57:17 converting into a 2:37 marathon for Lee, unless she was holding back the pace.

Can't see that happening, as she won the race the previous year. She was still smiling crossing the finish line though. :)

The 57:34 looks a lot like Marthon pace miles for Maria

Seems to be a bit of confusion:
McCambridge ran 54:48 for 10 miles and should be well on target.
Jennings ran 57:34 for 10 miles, and along with Lizzie (57:17), will need a little luck or a fantastic run to pull off qualification.

Cheers that makes a lot more sense .

Thanks for the clarification Krusty - had missed the post that said Jennings had done the 57:34 and had thought it was a time for McCambridge in another race. :o

Makes a lot more sense now alright.

+1 a great servant to Irish athletics over the years. She is more than capable of the time, just hope she gets the bit of luck she deserves.

The last 5k was in 18.51 which was her slowest section of the race. Really hope she keeps it going. She still looks on for it though if she can hold the pace with maybe a minute to spare. Approx 5k to go now. Dig Maria! Dig!
