Frankly, I do not have a team in the NFL - and I want one!

Who can I support? Who do you follow and how did you come about following them? I have been to San Diego for a few months in the past but it was in the off season so did not get to catch any games.

I hope this does not sound patronising to the hard core fans on here so I apologise if it does!

What sort of style of football do you like? Up tempo spread like teams or down and dirty pound the rock and defend teams?

I think I would prefer a team showing a bit of craft and guile, using speed and skill to win games as opposed to brash hard hitting.

Does that narrow it down for me?

Don't really want to go down the road of supporting the big guns every year either though like the Patriots.

The Bengals could be the team for you. Or the Panthers. Both are teams on the verge of contending and had great rookie QBs last season. When I think of craft and guile in the NFL I think of Cam Newton. And because I support the Bengals' rival, the Ravens, you should support the Panthers.

Dont pick a team because someone told you to.

Go onto the nfl.com website. Go to the season highlights, or weekly highlights, game highlights, interviews with managers and players. Spend some time going through them.

If you see any plays you like, any familiar things you like; good run plays/pass plays/tackling/blitzing/improvised plays and notice one team doing said thing more than the other or a particular player stands out to you or a teams does thigns that you like to see more, read about their setup and philsophy and a few interviews and see if thats the kinda team you would like to follow.

Taht way you've come to the decision on your own and because you like them and got excited by seeing them play.

This is a good point, but I think looking at the Panthers and Cam Newton you will like them.

Im a Ravens fan, but over the course of this season I have become a fan of the panthers. I love watching Cam play.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,339 ✭✭✭me-skywalker

But are you really a fan of the Panthers or more a fan or Cam? Thats what I would consider. I love watching Cam, Tebow, Bree's, Gronk, Lewis, Peterson but wouldnt be a fan of the teams.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,848 ✭✭✭✭Pudsy33

Yeah i suppose thats a fair point. I'm a Ravens fan first and foremost. I guess I am a fan of Cam, but in turn that leads to me wish success for the panthers.

The Panthers will be an exciting team to watch for years to come with Cam Newton leading them. Nice to get some diversity from other fans here.

Should help you on your way to getting to know them.

Look at the Lions as well.

Exciting team, big points. Young QB, Elite WR, Suh (while he is a dirty bast... player, he's also a great player).

Not a Lions fan btw, Im Bucs... don't look at them ... its too depressing. :(

I picked the Patriots 'cause I was in Boston once and was always a fan of Boston Celtics in the NBA, but over the season I've found myself also gravitating towards the Panthers, probably 'cause of Cam..

Pick the Bengals. We have a rake of draft picks and cap space to play with. Should really be a playoff team for the next few years if we play our cards right

thats a big if with the Bengals lol

Well OP, it's got to be the New England Patriots. But leaving Football reasons aside, our cheerleaders were recently voted the No.1 cheering squad in the NFL. :D

Sorry for the bump, but I didn't want to start a new thread.

I, too, am looking for a team. I have no ties to America, no family, never been there. I have only started watching this season and there are plenty of teams and players I like. RG3 is awesome, I like the 49ers and the Bear's D and for some reason I have ended up watching nearly all of the Colt's games. But I still cannot commit to picking a team I will stick with. Anyone help? Also for some reason I don't like the Pat's, it's an irrational dislike I have of 'the Gronk' and Brady, I can't help it!

Its not really something we can help with. It comes with time :P You'll soon find yourself cheering/booing calls made against certain teams and find yourself delighted when they do well. It can be the most frustrating sport to watch but it can also be absolutely thrilling :)

Don't rush it mate. Keep watching games and eventually, like Mal has said above, you will find yourself drawn to one of them. I'd keep doing that even if it takes a full season or more.

I know you might want to get a team sorted ASAP but trust me this season or so you will have of watching the game objectively will be one of the most enjoyable as when you do start supporting one it can be very hard to watch games without having the tinted glasses on and with their being so many games that can effect your team it can effect your enjoyment of games (but maybe that's just me :pac:).

Thanks for the advice guys. Yeah, at the moment I'm still learning about the game, different plays, terminology ect. Just feel odd not having someone to really get behind (ooh er) every week.

Agree with your point about enjoying the first season. It's great learning something new each game and seeing more depth to the sport than you first thought.

For me it was the Manning to Tyree pass in the superbowl that sealed my love of the Giants. The flawed genius that is Eli Manning makes them the perfect team to support.

Just wait and you'll find your Manning to Tyree moment when you think, yes this is the team for me.

P.S. you are not alone in your irrational dislike of the Pats and Mr. Uggs!!!

Haha very good. I started in 2003. We sucked but I remember Strahan nailing Pennington against the Jets in around this time of year and thinking wow this guy is awesome.

If you find Brady irritating you'll find Jay Cutler one million times worse. Follow the Giants. We have some exciting RB's now, pro bowl pass rushers, ELIte QB and we always have quality receivers.

Also have a look at the Vikings who are an exciting team atm.

If you find yourself watching the Colts regularly and can't understand why. Maybe you're subconsciously a Colts fan. Exciting young QB to build a team around. Not a bad team to run with. It'll come to you though.

    Give it time

I started watching baseball this year, quickly decided on a team, then another but by the end of the season I was set

    Orioles Magic!

Within several weeks you'll be pulled to one team for any reason.

You like the Colts so give the Colts a chance

I could be biased, but the Colts have a bright future, jump on now and nobody can accuse you of being fair weather, but they'll be competing, and playing savage Offense for the next 10-15 years.

Trying to settle on a team any info guys???

What kind of teams do you like watching? Flash offense or tough defense? Would you prefer a team in win now mode or an up and coming team? Who are your favourite/least favourite players? Is location an issue, for example would you prefer a cold or warm weather team in case you were planning on travelling over to see them etc?

There's just a few questions but if you answer them we'll be able to come up with some suggestions for you :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 128 ✭✭farranreeboy

Flash offense, up and coming team a team with warm weather what's the cost of travelling over to watch a game?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,710 ✭✭✭✭Paully D

Flash offense, up and coming team a team with warm weather what's the cost of travelling over to watch a game?

Well based on temperature data recorded here the warm weather teams would be Cardinals, Texans, Jaguars, Dolphins, Chargers and Buccaneers.

Out of those the Texans have the brightest future with a very good chance of winning a Super Bowl this year. I wouldn't say they have a flash offense but they have a top class running back in Foster and are very balanced overall. The Dolphins have surprised a lot of people this season going 4-3 through 7 games with a rookie head coach and quarterback. They're far more a mean defense than flashy offense but may be an interesting team to follow in the coming years. Chargers have a decent team on paper and will almost certainly be changing head coach which could well improve their chances, but they've had decent teams over the years and haven't really taken advantage. From 2004-2011 they were one of only three teams without a losing record, but never reached the promised land. There's also talk that they may move if a stadium doesn't get sorted. I wouldn't know a whole lot about the Buccs to be honest so would be interested in hearing from their fans on whether they'd recommend following them. Jaguars will cause you a world of pain and practically no enjoyment so I wouldn't bother, Cardinals have the awesome Larry Fitz but I wouldn't be too hot on them, with their QB they certainly don't have a flash offense but again like the Buccs I wouldn't know much about them. Jaguars would cause you a world of pain so I wouldn't even bother.

Based on your criteria I'd go Texans if you didn't mind the fact that you may get called a bit of a glory hunter due to how well they're doing lately. That said, they only had their first playoff appearance last year so it may not be an issue.

The cost of travelling over can vary greatly. For example it's cheaper to fly to the east coast than the west coast due to the shorter distance, and flights can range anywhere from a few hundred euro return to nearer four figures return depending on the time of year, how far ahead you book etc. For example a flight to Houston this time next year for a Texans game would cost you around €600.

Hopefully that helps a bit anyway :)

I am going the way of watching all the teams and seeing who I gravitate towards. So far it's The Colts, Bears and 49er's. I really like Indy, Andrew Luck leading the 80yrd drive to win against the packers was epic and Reggie Wayne is awesome too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,710 ✭✭✭✭Paully D

Cheers how about the cowboys? who would be the best teams and rubbish teams like the jags

With regards to weather Cowboys rank in the moderate temperature range but play in a dome now so even if you went to a game there when the temperature would be low, December for example, it would still be fine inside the stadium. As for the football well they'd be seen as perennial underachievers really. No Super Bowl since 1995 but one very loud owner who is no stranger to flashing the cash. Romo is their QB, a 3 time pro-bowler, has broken a number of Cowboys records but is always liable to make a costly mistake to throw away a game.

Some of the best teams would be, in no particular order, and I'm no doubt choosing one or two that others would include/exclude: Ravens, Texans, Patriots, 49ers, Packers, Giants, Broncos, Bears, Steelers and Falcons

Worst teams, as above: Jaguars, Chiefs, Rams, Browns

the weather is not a factor for me would't you rather go to a game thats warm instead of cold

I'd like to visit somewhere warm, but I'd rather watch a good team. Some of the all time great games have been played in the snow and ice. Many teams play in a dome, or a stadium with a retractable roof. Only a limited number of teams play in a nice climate year round. It's a winter sport and tbh, somewhere like Chicago, New York or Boston would suit me more in October, November, December.

If you do become an Indy fan, don't worry though, there's fcuk all else to do there besides watch sports and drink beer, lol.

Just started watching this year then I might start following the broncos.
Might be because I got the broncos in the boards league or the broncos have been the team I've seen live the most but in fairness I love watching Manning play, the mans a genius.
Although I was half thinking I shud follow a team with some sort of irish connection, don't the steelers have some irish connection?

If the Broncos are the ones you like to watch then they've effectively chosen you. Go with it :) you're in for an interesting time as you will have maybe a few years with Manning, and then someone new.

One the Steelers thing, the American Ambassador to Ireland's family own them. Although as a Baltimore fan I couldn't even condone supporting them ;)
