    Hi All,

My daily diet consists of largely nuts and berries. I'm guessing trying to bulk buy berries online is a no no but would be interested to hear of any links/tips for either in terms of finding value? For example I eat lots of almonds/pistachios and depending on where you buy them, they are both expensive!

    Thanks.

Ok thanks, have seen some here before. Actually have bought flaxeed/linseed here before as it's quite reasonable. Are there any online options?

Lidl and Aldi - would worry about the stuff online being rancid

Do either Aldi / Lidl sell sunflower / pumpkin seeds. Pumpkin seeds in particular are very expensive in Tesco.

I agree with Lidl/Aldi for cheap nuts and berries. Best deal on berries is Lidl's bag of frozen mixed berries (a lot of supermarkets sell similar frozen bags of berries--much cheaper than fresh)

asian supermarkets sell pistachios for 16 euro a kilo bag, which is much cheaper from any other place.
holland and barrwtt for cheap dried berries (especially during the cent sales
the only thing i cant find cheap here is walnuts.

if you are near liffey valley shoping centre try the asian supermarket there too, loads of cheap nuts and dried ingredients for cooking, new and weird vegetables, is fun to shop in these places anyway!

if you need adresses i can look for the ones i visit regularly:)

Tesco can be good if you root out the best deal.

Walnuts, for example, come in different brands, bags, sizes and the price variation is ridiculous even in the same shop.

They do display the price per kg though so it's not too difficult to compare them.

The best priced bag of walnuts worked out at €8.20/kg the last time I checked.

thanks for that, i generaly avoid tesco. i dissagree with their policy on promotin gmo products but maybe the one bag of walnuts wont hurt! ;)

Do you know how much they are? I usually buy 4 or 5 bags in Tesco at €2 a go.

And they have deshelled pistachios. They can have cheap broken cashews intended for cooking, so they will be raw & unsalted.

My tesco has nuts in about 5 places, so shop around the same shop, the baking section is often cheapest, and again will usually be raw & unsalted.

    very sorry i havent replied,
yeah they announced they suport gmo products and im not sure which are they but i take it everything branded tesco should be dodge and god knows what other brands are masked in a different name.
i usually prefer butchers for meat, asian market for fish and some veggies. also spices, nuts, rice, pasta, flour etc they are cheaper too
for the rest i trust lidl because in recent years they removed trance fats from their products. aldi is the go-to place for me. cheap, clean, friendly and nice products.

the asian shop i go to: Asia Market, 18 Drury Street, Dublin 2
also one behind a stop on the red line of luas, really close to o'connell, forgeting the name though

    hope this helps

Ikiru, I know I am late for the answer, but I am in the same situation. I have given up dairy and gone to make my own vegetable milks, so I have been looking around to buy nuts in bulk for this. All the options i found in Ireland are very expensive, I have searched all the supermarkets (asian, indian, german, english, irish), no luck. But few days ago I found this website:
    www.crazynuts.ie
They say they sell nuts, dried fruit, baklavas and similiar, and fudge, in bulk!!!
I have tried to get in contact with them, but had no answer yet.
Does anyone know this shop or if it has closed down already??
This is what I have been looking for soooo long, and now it is here, in ireland, but without answer...
Anyway, if someone is looking to start a business, this would seem a great idea, stocking Ireland of options not here yet. Hope someone knows this shop.
    Thanks

    stumbled upon this one: http://www.buywholefoodsonline.co.uk
they have bulk items for most things.. where you can buy like 2,5,20 kg of nuts/berries etc. shipping to Ireland is pretty decent too.

good selection of stuff. havent ordered yet but looks very good compared to amazon options and others.

crazynuts sounds interesting too, might be strictly trade only though

And their prices might not include VAT.

unless you are buying raw nuts for example which have Zero VAT in Ireland. and many other wholefoods have Zero VAT rate in fact. generally anything processed (salted, caramelized, glazed etc.) will have standard rate VAT but may raw foods like nut oils, fish oils etc will have Zero VAT. No idea who decides why raw nut should not be taxed vs a salted nut..

Never knew that! that explains why the unsalted ones in the baking section are so much cheaper. Some people figured they were a lower grade, sort of like cooking chocolate.

Just seen as a snack I suppose, more of a luxury than a necessity. I have roasted & salted my own cashews, lovely while still hot.

If they put a picture of a runner on a bag of glucose and stock it in a sports supplement store they are liable for VAT, if its in a plain bag in the baking or baby section, zero vat. Same with protein powders, if the pic of the bicep on the front is above 14" you pay VAT ;) Otherwise you can class it as a baking ingredient.
    Nuts- Salted / Roasted

    Rate:
    Standard

Also includes nuts covered in chocolate or yoghurt. Excluded from the Zero rate by reference to Part D ( c) of Table 1 of paragraph 8(1) of Schedule 2.
Nuts - Natural - Food And Drink

    Rate:
    Zero

I had no idea myself. In fact there are some very interesting categories that have reduced and 0% rate in the VAT rates tables.

But back to nuts - are there any irish nut growers? or is it all 100% import?

In light of todays fruit revelations regarding Hepatitis A, I'll bet the fruit and nut troop might be considering going back on the Tesco mince meat...... :P

Seeing as this thread has been re-ignited, Tesco now do a 200gm bag of their own brand almonds for under €2 which is a fantastic price.

Been looking around myself and aldi seem to be the best for almonds and hazelnuts at 1.80e for 200g
