    New base layers!! Woo-hoo!!

Never bought cycling gear in lidl before but I hear it's decent? Might hold off buying a mini pump until next week now :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,428 ✭✭✭DaveyDave

Got water resistant trousers, a waterproof jacket and water proof gloves from them a while ago. The trousers didn't help much, the jacket had a broken zip and the gloves were far from waterproof.

Might get some base layers, socks and gloves from them though.

    I wouldn't.

The mini pumps last time were pretty poor quality. Track pumps are prob just worth the 8 euro if you don't have one already.

Anything that claims to be water proof at that price can't be breathable in my opinion and hence is a waste of money.

    +1 on the "I wouldn't"

Socks are the only thing I think are worth a punt, I have got them in the past for both running and cycling. now I just need to figure out why the Cycling socks are a € cheaper than the Running ones

They're good for finger-less gloves, padded shorts, base layers and socks imho. Anything else I probably wouldn't bother with.

I wouldn't, the aluminium barrel threads to the plastic base gave way after one wheel, and was unusable after not much more.

"Unisex base layers" are just three words that shouldn't be allowed to decribe an item.

Personally I would only consider their jerseys and stocks. Gloves are alright and I would imagine the saddle bag should be grand.

Their waterproof gear are only for those who hates get wet by the rain but don't mind being covered in their own sweat!

They're hardly presta tubes there are they?

The waterproof jackets are definitely waterproof, i was using all winter fior the commute and stayed bone dry throughout some pretty heavy rain. But they are NOT breathable.

So they are grand for a short commute in cold weather but useless for a commute in mild weather and obviously rubbish on a training spin.

I did say "just". In fairness mine is still in use, but based on previous advice, I handle it with extra care.

I doubt it. Last time all they had was Schrader and they still had tons of them left weeks later, but maybe they've learnt!
Don't bother with the pumps, track pump lasts for a few uses just spend €20-30 online or in your LBS and get one that'll last for ages.
That said the gloves, base layers, shorts, jerseys etc have all been great value. Shorts are different style from the ones I got before but I'll be giving them a punt because last years ones have lasted very well and are plenty comfy.
I'll grab one of those gilets too.
You'll want your helmet on goin in there Monday morning, it's gonna get ugly!

I wanted to get the shorts but I'm worried I'll look like a character from tron.

Just get a jersey/t-shirt printed up with "My other bike's a Light Cycle" and no one will mind.

Don't touch the pump. The 2010 lights did not have flashing

Thing about lidl/aldi gear is that it seems to be different every year. Some stuff breaks very easily, other lasts and lasts. They are very good on returns so if you buy you can bring it back if you wish. I have some lidl gear which is now about 5 years old and is still being used and is in good nick. Shop wise and its all good.

Ive had one of these for months with absolutely no issues...

Ive had one of these for months with absolutely no issues...

I can only comment on my usage conditions so: Sandstone paving (therefore possibly uneven for the base) and pumping to 120psi.

Once the aluminium shaft starts to budge in the threads of the base at any angle other than exactly square (which I found started to happen at high pressure) it just starts to wear them out. Once the shaft pops out, you can keep screwing it in tighter and tighter but eventually it strips the plastic threads.

If it works for you, great, I have no doubt that there are many happy customers, however, I do post my conditions as a potential warning.

As with all things, buyer beware and ymmv etc.

Got a pump about a year and a half ago. Worked perfectly until last week when the head of the pump stopped gripping the valve tightly. Well worth the 7 quid in my opinion.

Are the Base Layer Cycling Shorts padded?
If yeah, would they be comfortable when there is also another layer of padding on cycling shorts themselves?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 178 ✭✭doozer16

I don't think the base layers are padded.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 198 ✭✭bedirect

Yes I agree about the track pump, it was ok for a year then it gave up. poor quality

Any idea what they mean when they say 'Choose from 4 styles' for the base layers - both tops and shorts. What kind of styles should I be expecting? I might be delegating the actual purchase to herself, so very specific details work best.

poor quality because it only lasted a year??? its only 8 euro like...what were you expecting?

You can be lucky or not with the floor pumps because there are a few different types. I bought three over the last while because they were so cheap. One lasted no more than a month with a seal on the manometer leaking and the connector head blew off at about 100 psi.
However another one has lasted about three years now with regular use up to 120 psi. These pumps might never fail if only used for a hybrid at 50 to 80 psi.
The fingerless gloves and most of the clothing are good value for commuting and training. The pads on shorts and tights are not suitable for long distances though.

I think the four styles are as per the picture on website - there is no difference in material, just colour and patterns.

    Base layer shorts are padded
Gilet seems to be good quality, has a mesh inside so it's warmer than just a 'windcheater' style.
    Gloves seem good too

i got padded base layer shorts there before, don't know if these are the same, but they are fine, great for if you want to wear loose shorts or running tights and still get the padding

from my experience they're different colour schemes

None of the Mens Shirts in Rathfarnham this morning - they didn't come in apparently.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,401 ✭✭✭reilig

Just out from Lidl, picked up a few bits and pieces:

Gillet - looks well made and is a good fit.
    Jersey - good fit
Saddle bag - full of handy tools and tyre levers and cheap.
Helmet - I have an awful problem with helmet sizes and this one is the best I have ever found, easily adjustable for those with a larger head, very light and very comfortable. It even has a led light on the rear for extra safety.
    Socks

Happy overall. I'd advise people to get there early if there is something taht you really want. In mullingar, there isn't a whole pile of stock and there are a lot of people there around the baskets!

None in Kildare either, plenty of the ladies versions.

Got some baselayer tops, gloves, socks, the saddle bag and a Gilet, all seem to be fine quality for the price to me. Picked up a waterproof jacket too, more for running up and down to the yard than longer spins but it seems on first inspection to be fine, how breathable it is remains to be seen.

Not a big stock in Kildare but the shop was quiet.

Couldn't see any of the men's jerseys in Rathmines either. Got 2 pairs of shorts (1 for a friend), base layer, waterproof trousers, track pump and the light set. Came to 68 euro altogether, very happy. Some gathering of cyclists there this morning!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,055 ✭✭✭Four of a kind

Picked up a few bits myself. Regarding the track pump.... Do I need any valves extra in order to pump up the tubes?

Never used one of these before.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,131 ✭✭✭Dermot Illogical

Just back from Lidl Rathmines. If you've got big feet they have a selection of socks just for you. Plenty size 11 and upwards.
The gloves are labelled as unisex, but I wouldn't consider myself euro enough to wear any of the colours they have left..
    Poor selection overall.

Anyone been in Walkinstown store late today? I tried the one near Vicar St at lunchtime and no base layers left plus it's a small store anyway. Would drive out to Walkinstown later if I thought there was any point.

Beware of cheap tyre levers, I picked up a Lidl saddle bag last year and all three levers snapped on their first use a few weeks back. Thankfully a friendly fellow cyclist was on hand to dig me out at the side of the road!
Don't think he looks at Boards, but thanks again Kevin!

I was at the Walkinstown store about 4.30 and they had only limited stock available. Shorts only 3/4 style in med.

Best best is green hills. Plenty stock up there after.

    Agree about the tyre levers,
    however
The saddle bag is really neat, worth it just to get the bag alone........
similar bag in lbs is over €20.......

Dropped in to Slaney Road,Glasnevin on the way home. They had plenty of
everything left only men's jerseys. Picked up a Waterproof Jacket & a few pairs of socks. Can't go wrong with the jackets, have a few of them already.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,428 ✭✭✭DaveyDave

Got two pairs of socks, the multitool and a floor pump. My Park Tool floor pump crapped out after less than a year, leaking air at the bottom of the short valve where the ball is, so I'm hoping this one will do.

Socks are nice, don't know if they're any use as they look just like the sports socks I got out of Dunnes last year, but still nice to have a good fitting sock lol

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 365 ✭✭Pablo Rubio

Went to Slaney Road in Glasnevin as well @5pm. Tons of stuff left got 2 Gilets , a track pump ,mitts and also got a pair of long fingered work gloves (got these before and are great on the bike).

The saddle bag is very good with a solid attachment mechanism. I got one a few years ago and it's still perfect but I bought another today as it was more colour co-ordinated. As has been said, don't rely on the tyre levers - my previous set snapped on the first use. I was lucky I was in the back yard and not out on the road.

(There didn't seem to be any jerseys in the Moore Street branch either this morning).
