    Hey all :):)

I'm 15 stone aiming for the time being for 14 stone and then take it from there .

I was just wondering would walking 5 miles a day outside ( which takes me about 1 Hour and 25 mins) 5 days a week help me lose weight ?

Although its weather permitting so if its pissing rain I'd go on the treadmill but the most I reach on that is 5km , as I couldn't get to 8km without dying of boredom :( .

I'm gonna try a ZUMBA class next week and some weeks I do walk 6 days :o

Which is better for buring calories walking on treadmill or on a country road ?

I'm trying to get my diet down to the 1500 calories but finding it difficult as I live at home and my mother does just not understand the word DIET!!! I know I have to get more willpower its just frustrating as when i'm cooking my own dinner I have to cook for everyone so can't be as super healthy as I would like.

I'm good on breakfast and lunch though and I'm barely eating any junk just the odd desert when out .

Anyway sorry if this is hard to understand its late and i'm tired so don't type the best when i'm like that.

Hope some of ye have advice for me anyway

    Cheers :):):)

You'll burn about 350 extra calories by walking 5 miles (extra over watching TV, not the total cals used).

So 5 times a week, thats 1750 a week or 250 a day. A pretty small number when you compare it to the fact that you prob burn 2500 daily.

Look at your food intake. With some smart choices you could prob save 250 calories per meal. That alone should prove that while exercise is helpful, diet is the best way to lose weight.

    Hi ????happy000,

The walking probably won't make that much of a difference as regards weight loss, in calorific terms a 5 mile walk is only the equivalent of a couple of biscuits. Weight loss is more or less entirely down to what you eat. It's still well worth doing though, it will have a big impact on how your body processes the food you eat and therefore on your overall health, if not neccessarily being great for your waist line.
Check out a show called "the truth about exercise" it's available on the bbc iplayer site, it shows among other things, the impact a 90 minute walk has on the fat levels in your bloodstream (which is where fat causes the real damage), basically cutting it almost in half when eating the same food. In the long term that would be of enormous benefit.

Are you tracking everything you eat? www.myfitnesspal.com has a food diary and it's a great way (if you're totally honest and log everything) of keeping within your daily limit (and not eating your exercise calories :))

1500 calories a day is actually lots and lots of food so you could easily make a big tasty and healthy dinner for you and your family without it resembling "diet" food in any shape or form or leave you feeling remotely hungry.

If your Mum is unable to make healthy dinners then it's probably an idea to start making your own and let the rest of the family eat what they are eating, that's the only way of controlling what you're eating tbh.

I am 19 stone at the moment but when I walked 5 miles a day some years back the weight fell off me but I just could'nt keep it up.

The walking may not burn a whole lot of cals but it is good for your overall health. Generally when we exersice and feel good its easier to make good food choices. Plus out walking in this sun you'll get loads if feel good vit D.

    Best of luck

    Yes.

If you walk 5 miles a day, provided you don't change anything else (i.e. provided you don't eat more), you will lose weight.

    Slowly mind you.

Any regular increase in energy expenditure with calorie intake remaining the same will cause some weight loss. Neither walking 5 miles, nor jogging 3 miles will make a huge difference, but it will make some difference.

Some people find it easier to walk than run. Until this year I weighed about 15 stone - running was hard on my joints so I found walking easier. Now that I've lost some initial weight I'm transitioning over to running more to burn more calories more quickly. But I don't push beyond what my joints will put up with

If you're 15 stone the chances are that walking 5 miles a day will help you lose weight...at the beginning. At a certain point you'll plateau and then diet becomes very important.

You say if you're cooking you can't be super healthy because you're cooking for everyone. Fair enough but there's little things you can do to make the food healthy yet tasty. Also eat less. I cook for my husband and I so it's relatively healthy but I eat much smaller portions than before. If you look at your portion sizes for all meals and try not snack too much throughout the day you should lose weight.

It might help you lose weight, it definitely won't hurt your health and feeling of wellbeing.

There are two types of people when it comes to exercise. Those who tend to compensate with increased eating and those who don't. It has to do with how the brain responds to exercise as a reward.

If you fall into the latter group you'd do well to tackle the weight loss on both fronts, but I think if you lose about a stone you're going to have to start looking at diet in any case to lose any more weight.

I started trying to lose weight about 15 months ago. I was 14 stone on the button, had given up smoking, mother died and had eaten everything in sight! Anyway I started walking the roads here and I couldn't walk 5 kms a day at first and I slowly built it up. I built it up to 5kms a day and lost 3 stone. After that I went up to 5 k twice a day but I seemed to have plateaued. I did this all with gradual diet change also, nothing too dramatic to start with. Anyway had to take myself to the gym where I now walk about 10 k per day on the treadmill at an incline of 12.5 - 15% at about 6.5 km per hour. Now I weigh 9 stone 6 and am aiming for 9 stone. You can lose weight initially with walking alone but eventually you will have to change your diet if you want the weightloss to continue and be permanent. I also do a few weights classes a week now in the gym and love the buzz from the exercise. There is no doubt its very hard but in my experience diet is the most important part. Good luck with it

I'd imagine the food you WON'T be eating, because your out walking, will help just as much as the walking itself.

Any regular increase in energy expenditure with calorie intake remaining the same will cause some weight loss. Neither walking 5 miles, nor jogging 3 miles will make a huge difference, but it will make some difference.

This is misleading. Walking or other additional activity does not guarantee weight loss. Depending on your existing calorific intake you may just slow your existing weight gain rate or stay at the same weight.

Happ000 For most people the basic rules apply. 1lb of fat=3500 calories. Want to loose a lb a week? Then you need to consume/eat 3500 calories less than you burn. 2lbs a week 7000cals. There is a great, free app available on iOS and Android called Loseit that basically does all the work for you. At work I can end up burning as much as 300 cals walking or as little as 50 so I use a pedometer app too. Loseit wil help you track your foods and activiy levels. It is important to match these as you do not want to send your body into starvation mode. To avoid this, the generally accepted max weight loss is 2lb/week.

Rather than going on a crazy diet and or walking for 90mins a day every day in the week (or whatever), my advise would be to use an app like loseit as a tool to make sustainable, long-term changes to your diet and activity levels as well as becoming back in tune with how much your body actually needs to eat. That's what worked for me anyway. 60lbs down. Dont fret too much about stuff being low fat at first, just monitor the calories in and out.

In any case, walking is a great idea. It will help with your mental health, base cardio ability, boost your metabolisim some and therefore likely help with your energy levels too. All great things. I would stress again though, choose a time/distance and frequency that is going to be sustainable and enjoyable for you.

Why misleading ? It was a reasonable assumption that they were at a steady state as they didnt' say 'I am putting on weight'.

Apart from that there is no getting away from "Energy cannot be created nor destroyed, merely changed from one form to another"
Maintain the same amount of energy input but increase energy output and you WILL lose weight - however slowly. Simple as.

You should look into doing bodyweight exercises at home. You could do 45mins of a decent workout at home and I guarantee you'll see better and quicker results. Also takes less time and isn't weather dependent.

Doing walking or jogging as your sole method of dropping fat is a bit like saying you're going to drive from cork to Dublin but you end up driving via limerick I.e you might get to your destination but it's not the quickest method and more often than not it will never get you there.
Hit the weights, foam roll, stretch, cut out the wheat, eat unprocessed foods 90% of the time and enjoy the ride
