First of all I apologize if this is the wrong section to porst this but anyway.

I don't have any real knowledge when it comes to protein shakes,I'm a gaelic footballer who wants to build up more,is there a certain type of protein for sports players etc?

Sorry for the stupid question :o thanks in advance :)

There's stickies on the top of the forum. Diet and nutrition. Or just watch Transforms vids first. Protein shakes aren't for everyone. you may well be getting enough protein in your diet already.

If you want you could post your routine, weight, height and diet.

Well i'm pretty fit,I'm 6"2 and weigh 13 stone and I train 3 times a week.I'm 18 years old so my diet isn't exactly perfect :pac:

Hven't done much gym work since last summer either, but for the moment I'm just curious about trying out the protein shakes.

Protein shakes are exactly what they sound like. They're just basically a way of upping the amount of protein in your diet if you aren't already getting enough through other food sources. They not some magic muscle building shake like a lot of people seem to think.Drinking a protein shake is basically like eating a breast of chicken. The good thing about shakes is that you dont need any preperation so you can have them directly after a workout which is the ideal time.

You'd need some kind of weight training to get the benefit. I don't take whey meself. Out of the ones I have used I found this one the best.

    http://www.abcsportsnutrition.com/products.php

Called complete whey, it's made in Ireland. It contains all the usual stuff plus glutamine. There's a finite amount of glutamine your body can produce, so if your training three times a week and then lifting weights on some other days it might benefit you.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glutamine

As I say, I'm no expert. I'm finding a couple of extra eggs in the morning are doing fine for me for now.

Well once I get the time in the summer I'm going to be going to the gym 5 times a week along with the three training sessions.

That site myprotein.com seems the best, any recommendations on what type I should go for?

It's just protein. Think of it like a food rather then supplement.

I know but I don't wanna gain weight by not doing any gym sessions for the moment :P

It could be a waste if your already getting enough protein in your diet to maintain muscle, at 13 stone you need about 90 grams of protein a day to maintain, this would be fairly easily got through diet, your surely nearly already there, an extra chicken breast or 2 eggs would sort you out.

Since you engage in a bit exercise but no real tear on your muscles you might wanna increase your protein by about 20% up to near 110 grams per day, the protein shake could benefit you here if your finding it difficult to supplement your diet with the food.

If you were lifting or intensive resistance training you would want to be increasing your protein intake by around 50%, so up to about 135 grams per day for yourself at your current weight, the shake could definitely come in handy here, as mentioned there's no preparation, its handy to leave the tub in the car for me, on the odd day where I cant get enough protein from food, not that food is any a better source, its all protein at the end of the day but I just love food!

Thanks to everyone for the replies,So if I'm training 3 times a week and playing a match would it be just 1 or 2 scoops of the protein per day?Cheers again.

nope. it doesn't matter if you don't drink a protein shake straight after your workout, just that you get the amount of protein you need every day and that you are properly nourished pre-workout

the number of scoops of protein you need a day is entirely dependent on how much you eat. as others have said if you eat enough high protein foods you don't need a supplement.

I used Whey protein and train 4-5 times a week and am a healthy eater. I gained 8 pound in weight after 3 weeks use and all around the belly area. I'd say it's not for everyone tbh.

what sort of training were you doing?

I don't think whey alone could cause 8lb gain of fat without your calories being overall too high

You are confusing causation with correlation. The whey protein alone could not have caused this weight gain.

If you weigh 185 lbs, then your supposed to have 185 grams of protein a day?

That's fairly dificult to obtain through whole foods I'd think.

No, its recommended you have about 1.1gram per kg,

so 185 lbs = 83kg, means about 90 grams of protein

ok i found USN brand to be good..what im taking at the mo is their anobolic protein, really good for building muscle fast and gaining a bit of weight... found an improvement every week in what i could lift in the gym and gained muscle too... after a couple of months on this i then moved to protein igf1 and xedra cut to burn off any excess fat.. found it great but you HAVE to work out 3 times a week at least to see good benifits... protein shakes alone are pretty useless... i get my stuff off fitnesssupplementsvitimans.ie fairly good to deal with and next day delivery... dont be afraid to ask for free shakers and freebies when ordering as if your buying what iv said it dosnt come cheap. anabolic is around 39euro and igf and xedra cut are 49 i think...hope this helps

Protein with IGF-1 would be a good bet for not putting on any excess weight, IGF or Insulin Growth factor also has many other positive benefits - increase muscle mass, quicker recovery times, reduce hair loss and even reduce the risk of some cancers!

Do you really think there is IGF-1 in any decent amount in those shakes?
