EA may well announce the latest instalment in the city building series this week according to rumours.

Apparently these are genuine concept screenshots. They appeared in German game magazine Gamestar

Hopefully it is true that Maxis have been brought back. The last Sim City (Societies) game was a complete disaster of a game and drew a huge backlash against EA from fans of the other Sim City titles. Be interesting to see this develop in the coming months assuming it is true.

Man, I put so much time into a couple of Sim City titles over the years; SimCity 4 was the main offender for stealing my time, but I actually also have fond memories of the SNES version back in the day! Something very satisfying about releasing a 200 foot Bowser on your carefully built metropolis :pac:

Anyway, looking forward to upcoming announcements confirming this. PC gaming isn't the same without a strong SimCity!

Had posted this on the Sims forum but what the hey. Could well be announced before the week is through. Hope its true. I can't fault any of the previous Sim City games. How can they go wrong!

More info regarding multiplayer, system requirements etc. There's also talk of a limited edition, which will include
super hero and evil villain lairs, characters, crime waves, and associated items.
    Nice!

Will it be an origin exclusive

That would be the fear (for me at least - I'm sure others have no problem with Origin). According to one guy in the comments section of the Tom's article, the Deluxe Edition will be Origin only, but I don't know where he got that info.

Maxis are doing a q&a on reddit right now.

I adore Simcity! Hope it's good.

They've just lost a sale. Why in god's name do they think this is a good idea? Ubisoft did it and the quickly reversed their intentions on a constant internet connections. Idiots!

Also does it need Origin client to play, i haven't took the plunge into Origin and don't want to either

Guess Ill have to pirate this to play it offline anyway, so I think Ill just skip the part where I usually buy it too

The online only thing is really irritating but it's not too late for them to change their mind. Regardless, a game like this is a "pure" PC game and needs to be supported.

What I would like to see is to make the game such that you should be online to really get the most out of it but you can still play it offline.

There's still a good chance that will happen.

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 4,726 Mod ✭✭✭✭Gonzovision

Apparently you only need to be online when you start the game. Still ridiculous though. Really hope they make a decent job of this and leave all the sims crap out of it. Reticulating Splines anyone?

  • Legal Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 5,400 Mod ✭✭✭✭Maximilian

From what I've read about it, it certainly sounds like the simulation aspect of the game will be much improved. It sounds like everything is simulated from the sims themselves to the coal in a power plant.

I like the fact that some buildings will be modular, so you can add a helipad to a police station, that kind of thing.

    Looks really good too.

A look at the direction they're taking it
SimCity – The Connection Between You and the World

Real cities don't live in bubbles, real cities are connected to each other.

People and resources flow from city to city in regional economies. Neighboring cities directly affect each other, and through markets, their actions affect other cities across the world.

Because cities are connected, they specialize and differentiate. That's possible because they're all playing roles in a larger economy. Cities look different because they make a living doing different things. Clusters of cities working together do things that no city can do in isolation.

From the beginning, we built this SimCity to deal with this stuff realistically. We're not just simulating the internal mechanics of cities, we're simulating how cities relate to each other, to resource markets and to the natural world around them.

These are things that we have to do if we're going to model real cities with integrity.

The larger environment that cities live in, and the global markets that they are participating in are all being simulated on Maxis' servers. We're running the underlying simulations that enable cities to transform their regions, to interact with each other, and to move markets. We're tracking the accomplishments of cities and their effect on each other and the larger world.

This is true whether you're playing by yourself, or if you've invited a bunch of friends to come and play with you. Your impact on the larger world matters, and the larger world in turn influences your city. This will be visible in lots of different ways, from changing commodity prices, to leaderboards to global and regional opportunities.

Here's what this means in practice - Your cities won't all look the same, they'll take on specific roles, and it's just awesome to create a region with your friends. It's magical to see Sims come from their city to yours. It's fun to make stuff and send it to a friend when they need it.

When you see the connection between your city and the larger world, your city is more real than it's ever been before.

That's why it's an online game. We'll be showing you more of this at this year’s E3 Expo in June.

Apparently there will be no Subways in this game, was going to get this on pre-order but think i'll wait a month or two now, until it comes down a few quid

I imagine subways will come as a transport expansion pack. A bit annoying for something that will cost the guts of €50.

The need for a constant internet connection to play this has put me off completely.

I'll give it a week or two after release and we'll see a subway DLC or maybe included in a Pre-Order package..

I bet there'll be a mod out before long.

I could download this game illegally but because I love it so much I'm willing to give EA my money. However when it comes to charging extra for subways they can jog on. The mod will probably be better anyway...

First impressions are its good. The beta has too many features locked out to make any more analysis on it though. There's a good few bugs too. UI and graphics are slick.

Would it be a day one purchase for you cherry

I think it will be for me. I gave it a blast last night and really enjoyed it. While the graphics aren't amazing, they are intricate and really suit the whole "individual Sim" idea that they're going for. It seems more of a living city, which really drags you in. The tutorial shows a bank robbery than ends in a shoot out, so I'm curious to see if that sort of thing is simulated in the full game, or if it was just a one of cut sequence.

I haven't come across any real bugs so far. It's not without it's problems though. The map itself is tiny. It's more SimTown than SimCity. As said above, since lots of things are locked out, you can't get a full feel of how many things work. I'll hopefully have more to say later after giving it a good going over now.

    I already have it preordered so I don't have a choice :p

I reckon it's got great potential but as the barebones beta goes, it's hard to say what the full release will show.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,976 ✭✭✭✭humanji

Cherry, did you find out where the expo centre was hidden away? It's one of the little missions you're given to build one, but I couldn't find it anywhere. I assumed it just wasn't in the beta, but found it odd that it wouldn't be shown when all the other locked buildings were there, but with "Not in Beta" written on them.

Yeah I had the same issue. I came across another mission to build a sports stadium and it's also locked.

Did ye just preorder from origin?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,976 ✭✭✭✭humanji

I did as I was too lazy to look around for better value. I think you also get something called "Plumbob Park" for ordering on Origin, which I'm sure will make all the difference.
