Why people in Ireland don't have or use garages?

Most houses are not equipped with garage in this country.
And even if it is, it's usually don't used for parking the car.

    What is the reason?
Considering the amount of rain here, indoor garage for car would be very good for cars.

To be honest I don't know any person keeping his/her car in the garage in Ireland. I also can't think about any with garage used for storing the car in my area.

    Why is that?

I'm not saying about going to extremes like this, but normal garage!

I haven't seen too many issues with paint from cars being stored outside, and we certainly don't have issues with rust etc.

Why do you think we all need garages?

Most people, when buying a house in an estate, given the choice of an extra bedroom or a garage, take the bedroom.

Also, we don't tend to mind our cars in this country, so even if we have a garage, we'll put a chest freezer, the lawn mower and an old suite of furniture that's too good to throw out in there instead.

With the houses built here the last 10 years, you are lucky if you have driveway, nevermind a garage.

Have you seen Extreme couponing? Plenty of Americans dont use their garages to park their cars either. :)

I actually use my garage for keeping the car in it. But then I am a bit different ;). And... I keep my bikes in the house :).

Yeah, I found the same, I do not know many people that ever used their own garage for garaging their cars.

Most household garages are full of crap, with regard using them for cars the're better off outside rather than putting them inside wet.

I would choose a garage over a bedroom and because I have only one garage, I keep my lawn mower outside, as I do not care about it.

My car is garaged every night. The OH has to leave hers outdoors. :p Other than de-frosting in winter there really is no great difference.

I would absolutely love a house with a garage so I could park my car securely at night, but I dont think I have ever come across a rental property that has a garage. Shocking really.

My old lad keeps the car in the garage alright, and I would too if I could.

But try finding a house in a modern estate with a garage :(

I'd love a garage that would have room to mess around with the car and service etc.. but realistically you'd need to live in a field or an extremely expensive house/estate to have one.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,884 ✭✭✭101sean

Out in the sticks around me there's loads of mansions built in the good times but the garage is always several yards from the house and I can never figure why, I'd want at least a covered path to get to my car without getting soaked.

Mind you, I'd never be able to fit a car in a garage anyway, it would be full of essential crap!

I gave my car a gift of being garaged for a month, but this was only during the holidays.
Normally she's kept in the Irish rain.

However it's so convenient, to be able to drive in straight into your garage, and then unload all the shopping from the car, without a need to use an umbrella or rain coat.

I used to have a lovely peugeot 205gti in the garage. It was waiting to become a classic. Then the Mother in Law moved into the garage and the 205 got sold. I definitely drew the short straw on that one.:mad::mad:

That is just why I asked. As it's just strange why don't they include garages in those houses while building?

In most countries in EU, even a cheap housing estate houses, are often equipped with garages.

I want to keep mine in a garage. But first I must finish concreting the pat to the garage. Right now it get's dirty on the way to the garage. Once that is done I will garage it every night though.

Plenty of estates here were built with garages. Most of those garages were later bricked up and became another room.

I know!! But not in Ireland and I'd say a lot of people would love one but its not really possible, especially areound Dublin

    1. Houses are too small.
    2. Even if the house has a garage, it's usually so small you can't get the car in and open the door to get in/out.
    3. People don't give a sh!t about their cars.

I would've thought car ports would be handy, but the planning requirements shot that one in the arse too.

I would absolutely love to be able to use my garage for the car but unfortunately it is not wide enough. I barely have enough room to walk around the Honda Pan European I keep in there! Even if I put a classic Mini in there I doubt I could get out of it. This is in a house that was built in the 80s.
Next house will have a double garage..... if I win the lotto!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,907 ✭✭✭✭MetzgerMeister

My folks built a garage adjoined to the house. It's a proper size one and all i.e. you can get a car in there, fully open the doors, walk around it etc.

Sadly, the garage is where the washing/drying machines are, huge press, bicycles and all that garagey stuff.

When I buy/build a house it will most definitely have a proper garage. I often wish for somewhere that I can wax/work on my car out of the rain. It would make my life so much easier :(

A few houses in the road from me have great garages too but none are used for cars. One of them, the wife had the husband living in the garage because he smoked a pipe! He slept there at night and all! It's such a waste especially when there are people who would use garages for what they're meant to be used for!

I'm lucky enough to have a garage with space for 3 cars(or 4 with 1 up on the lift) but normally on my car is in it. The wife hates the hassle of opening garage doors etc in the mornings so won't put here car in it.

I normally just laugh as I head out the gate on an icy morning while she is still waiting on the car to defrost:D

Instead of needing a larger site, they can squeeze a 4 bed house into less space.

If they build the garage into the house then it generally has 1 less bedroom and they can't charge as much for it.

Plus as many said already, most Irish people couldn't give a sh1te about their car.

So here's what you can buy her for a next christmas present.

It's very handy and shouldn't cost more that couple hundred euro.

I'm a few weeks away from owning a 200 year old Georgian house, with a 14x14ft stone mews (originally a stable) at the end of the garden. Its spectacular inside, the roof is 2.5 stories high, its gonna make an epic garage. :D (even has a pit in it)

Garages can in some circumstances cause worse rust problems than leaving the car out.

We where lucky enough to get a house with a garage, her MX5 is in it every night.
It even has a remote, which is a very handy thing.
Sadly only room for one, so the CMax is parked in the rain and slowly turning green.
Definitely an Irish thing along with the Dickensian insurance here.
I honsetly don't know what it is, one reason is the obsession with people here to squeeze 17 bedrooms into a terraced house.
I'd rather have two proper sized bedrooms and a garage rather than 5 shoe-boxes, 4 of which never get used and a car out in the rain.
Once had a 1973 MKIII Cortina, had to sell it again, I was a fool for buying it living in a house with no garage.
Which brings us to part two of this thread:
During the height of the boom the Irish must have bought half the classic cars in the UK and brought them over here.
Half of them have dissolved into puddles of rust, becaue in the UK a lot of them would be kept in heated gagares and people here don't understand that you cannot park a 70's car in the rain.
Next morning there'll be nothing left but a brown puddle.

I nearly always put my car the garage, only leave it outside on a good summers night.

"People" don't look after their cars here. but I do, and many others do also. I'd say tis better for the car to put it in the garage and also to not drive it when there is salt on the road.

Sure it'd be better not to drive it at all. You wouldn't want your tyres or suspension to get worn!!

I have a car for that also. The front suspension is already worn though but I'll replace that eventually and then not drive it.

I have a garage at home and the above is the reason why I rarely garage my daily car. Its actually bad to put a wet car into a poorly ventilated garage. The car will not dry propery causing dampness.

It's an oddly cultural thing I think, my wife is from South Africa and is obsessed with parking cars in the garage. The sea air in Cape Town is a killer though, it rusts the crap out of cars, I would assume the west coast of Ireland would be very similar, but growing up in Ireland the garage was for the deep freeze, bikes and lawnmower, the shed was for turf!!

Ehm, maybe at least because of that green sh1t that grows on cars (between panels and lamps, on window rubbers etc.) if car hasn't been driven for a week or two? :D

It could have been driven, but most likely wasn't washed for months. And that shows how we care about cars in this country ;).

I have a garage alright. It's actually a double garage.

Now here comes the culprit. It's an outhouse, that was build with the max dimensions allowed without having to request planning.

    Fair enuff.

Obviously, it'll make more money (selling the house), if there is a double-garage, so the building was turned around and the doors were stuck in the side.

Now it's a garage for 2 minis (not MINIs) or 2 Micras .. if you're lucky.

None of my cars will fit in, so that the door can be closed. I've managed to get a 5-series in one gate, turn left across the other garage space and then mangle myself out of it and close the gate. Nuff said ?

Essentially, the only thing it's useful, is to park half a car (either nose or rear) into the garage, when I want to do a wee bit work on it and want to avoid to get wet.

It's the most useless thing in the world. And since I'm only renting, there's no way, I can knock a side-wall and put a gate in there to make it at least usable for one car sorts of.

Essentially, it's of no use whatsoever. I will probably be able to stick my Mk1 Scirocco just about in there (with no space left) and be able to do some work. Just about.

    /M

Clearly a garage designed by someone who had anything else in the world in mind, except cars.
    Also, WOW! A MKI Scirocco!
I have seen exactly one of them in the last 10-15 years and that was in France!
About as common as rocking horse poo, you'll stand out with that thing.
