After 2 years of procrastination I bit the bangeromics bullet.

Went up to the shmoke today and collected a rather nice Jaguar S Type

It's a 3.0 manual, spec is pretty good, it has auto lights, electric black leather seats, sunroof, dual climate, upgraded 17 inch alloys, and a CD changer.

It needs a good clean inside and out, there are a few scuffs and that, but I think it will clean up really well.

It's a 1 owner car, seems to drive well, I got 27 mpg on the journey back to the wesht, which is about what I'd expected.

I've since found out that one of the rear doors is stuck closed, never checked it, I reckon it's do do with the double locking, probably a good bit of hassle to get it sorted,

Apart from that, I'm dead chuffed, will post up pics tomorrow once I've given it a scrub.

It's not as if it's a merc with a horrible clunky manual box and a silly handbrake, it's a nice enough box, and it's quare nippy.

    Well wear Colm :)

Best of luck with her Colm. Always kinda liked the look of them. Had potential for some slight pimping, but nothing OTT.

    Lovely car.

Yeah, black headlight clusters, later spec grill, de-chrome, something like that,

In the meantime, I'm just gonna make sure noting falls off or blows up and go from there.

Is there a reason you went for manual though? Or is that just the car that came up?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

The auto box on the early ones is a bit disastrous by some accounts, engaging reverse while driving, clunky changes etc. there is also the bonus of a bit better mpg and it being faster.

There were a few autos for sale, but I wouldn't have bothered, there's enough to go wrong besides the gearbox,

I would rate the manual you got as a huge plus on that S type tbh, as you mention it's better for the mpg and one less thing to worry about.
Conversely I wouldn't have bought my ZT if it were manual so it's not a manual bias on my behalf, purely a car specific smart option when looking at the bargain end of the market.

    Happy motoring with it :)

Gratz bud. How much was it considering it was bangornomics? Couldn't you go for some nice xj or xk?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

Shade over a grand, an xj is too much of a jag to start with I think

Nicely done but the Jag crowd will find out where you live and stone you for buying a manual jag :)

If I had the money I'd get a brand new Jag, throw out the ould prundlebox and put in a manual box and tell the "Jag crowd" to take a long walk off a short pier

Half the "Jag crowd" would break their back in the process of lifting up the stone anyway

Never mind 'the jag crowd'. When I was a kid, my father came home from the Yorkshire pipelines with a 3.4S MANUAL http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jaguar_S-Type_(1963) Until we got a Beetle, and then another, I thought all cars had switchgear. Same colour as this :-

Manual to drive it like you stole it.

    Great buy.

Congrats man - I love the S Type and you seem to have picked up a great one. I hope it gives you hours of pleasure. What's she like to drive???

Nice choice, have a soft spot for the S-Type. And manual is a good call too. Post some pics when you can and happy motoring:)

In the meantime, I've done the AutoGlym leather treatment on the interior, Son of a Gun'd the dash, washed the exterior, and got the scuffs and marks off it. It's raining now, had planned to polish it :(

    Wish I had a garage again :(

The alloys look like they weren't properly cleaned in 12 years. tried alloy wheel cleaner, steam wash, nothing

    Detailers everywhere, look away now

I bought some Cif (Jif) cream cleaner, it's taking the brake dust off, slowly...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 439 ✭✭Carstuck

Beautiful car Colm, well wear. I know what you mean with the alloys, it took me two years to fully clean off the last bit of brake dust off mine a while back!

+1 on the jif. Only substance known to man that will take cow ****e stains off a stainless exhaust;)

Edit: love the car, happy motoring!

I had the same problem with brake dust on alloys. I found cillit bang and the rough side of a sponge took it straight off. Also an old toothbrush to get in the corners if you have one.
    Nice car btw

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,683 ✭✭✭✭Owen

Yeah, I wouldn't be using the rough side of a sponge unless you want swirl marks in the paint finish on the wheels. And Cilit Bang? Yikes! Just get some elbow grease on the case and plenty of made for the job wheel cleaner.

Well wear Colm, looks like an oh so comfy barge, and unusual. You won't see many others with the same car, and thats always a huge plus in my book!

Problem is its baked in too much for the brake cleaner to take effect.

The wheels I had had the very same problem as the ones in your picture. The cillit bang might sound a bit harsh but I tried everything and nothing worked. As for a kitchen sponge leaving swirlmarks, thats complete rubbish unless they are polished chrome wheels which yours aren't. :pac:

Of course it's complete rubbish, I only repaired alloys for a living and still spray paint. Go out and use the rough part of the sponge on your bonnet and see what happens :pac:

I got new pin striping for the T/A as the old stripes were flaking off. Missus was giving me a hand to strip and caught her using the rough end on the stubborn bits!:eek::eek:

REcently my brother's neighbour had someone in painting his side of the wall between their drives. Windy day so my sister-in-law's MPV gets millions (and I do mean millions) of tiny bright yellow spots all down it. THe neighbour must have notice it as when the darkness came on, he decided to try and take the emulsion off with a scouring pad. They're not particularly car proud but it now looks like ****. Was black, now swirly black. They haven't the heart to force him to pay for a respray, the mugs.

    * Waits to see if brother spots this post

Brought it to work today, at 60mph in 5th it does 25mpg. in 4th it does 30.

    Weird :D

you cant hear the engine anyway so it revving higher doesn't bother me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,694 ✭✭✭✭L-M

Noticed that with a few cars, lower gears return better mpg once the engine isn't labouring.

Such a cool car, i'd nearly have bought it myself.

    Best of luck with it!
