Agree totally with the above from Watty.

Seperate management of the network from RTE is essential if arms length deals are to be done. However, Comreg and the BAI are not doing such a good job of being arms length from vested interests.

This has been slowly happening since 1999 ... 2001. The Transmission network separated to RTENL about then and technically "For sale" since.

RTÉNL was created in Dec 2002 out of the failed sale of 67% of RTÉ's network division (Netco/DTTN*) in Oct 2002. There were 3 final bidders but the price had dropped from approx €70m to €20-30m by the time "ItsTV" withdrew its bid for the multiplex licence. Two of the bidders were venture capital group Apax Capital Partners and France Telecom subsidiary TDF.

In Oct 2002 the network sale was cancelled and hasn't been for sale since. The McCarthy Review Group recommended its sale back in early 2011 (Recommendation 43).

While 2RN Networks will remain a subsidiary of RTÉ it will have a separate board and operate independently of RTÉ.

(*DTT Network Co. (CRO No. 310485), a dormant subsidiary of RTÉ created in 1999 in preparation for the sale of its transmission network)

Under the changes RTENL, which owns and manages the transmission infrastructure of masts and relay stations, will be renamed and its headquarters moved off the Montrose site.

An independent chairman and new independent board members will be appointed, and non-disclosure agreements drawn up between the company and its parent, RTÉ.

An article in the Sunday Business Post of June 23rd named the 6 new directors appointed to the board of RTE Transmission Network Ltd / 2RN.

The 6 new directors join 2 existing directors.

    New Directors
    - Eoin McGettigan - former Musgraves executive/Clearys Chairman
    - Mike Byrne - CEO GS1 Ireland (supply chain standards agency)
    - Eunice O'Raw - Barrister / RTÉ Board member
    - Stuart Switzer - MD COCO Television / RTÉ Board member
    - Breda O'Keeffe - RTÉ Executive Board / RTÉ Chief Financial Officer (Acting)
    - Richard Waghorn - RTÉ Executive Board / RTÉ Chief Technology Officer

    Existing Directors
    - Mick Kehoe - Executive Director 2RN
    - Cillian de Paor - Secretary to the Board of 2RN, Secretary to the Board of RTÉ, Managing Editor News at RTE

Eoin McGettigan is the independant Chairman of the 2RN Board.

RTÉ Board Chairman Tom Savage, who was also RTÉNL Board Chairman/Director, resigned his position from the RTÉNL Board just prior to the reorganisation in March.

Tom Savage, Mick Kehoe and Cillian de Paor were the 3 remaining members of the RTÉNL Board since the retirement of Conor Hayes last Sept and the retirement of Cathal Goan as RTÉ DG in Jan 2011, neither were replaced on the RTÉNL Board.
