I often wonder about aircraft carriers in heavy waters... do the planes ever slide off the deck of the ship?

Even as I write that I feel stupid - I'm sure they are secured down in some way

Not necessarily. I don't know how big Carrier Air Wings are nowadays, but back in the late 1990s, they had to leave some aircraft up on the flight deck because they simply didn't have enough hangar space. From what I read, that "honour" usually fell to the E-2 Hawkeyes and C-2 Greyhounds. The aircraft were all tied down, so that they wouldn't just roll off the deck, though I'm not sure how much stress those tie-down chains can take.

It's a bit of a different story with the Royal Navy. In "Phoenix Squadron", author Rowland White states that it was not unknown for HMS Ark Royal to lose a Phantom or Buccaneer "over the side", particularly during night ops. He doesn't quote any numbers though.

Good luck trying to figure me out. I haven't managed that myself yet!

Wonder why they left the Seahawk helicopter in that position, surely the could have moved it back, I know they are well treated for seawater but its getting some wash over her there.

    From the Youtube comments:
To answer the most common question asked here, the helicopter was left on the bow because it landed and crews had to tie it down and get their butts off the deck as they entered the storm.

sounds dubious, but who knows...

Look, I know nothing - literally - about boats.

But I'm beginning to see why they're attractive to people.......and, as good a moneypit I suspect as any car or motorbike ! :P:P

But my view from the Wheelhouse for the weekend was this - life at 7km/h, max...... :

but quite a lot of this too - not so great :

how did you get on with the boat? Any incidents? Easy to control?

I've been telling my wife a barge break would be lovely

It's actually great. We've been inspired by Timothy West and Prunella Scales' programme on Canal Journey's around the world, and have done 3 trips in...5 years ?

Now, straight up, if you're expecting the Hilton or Radisson standard of accomodation facilities....yer in for a land as they say.........

The boat is easy to - drive ? - but you do need to get the hang of it. Don't cut corners: don't forget they swing out the back : they don't steer in reverse. Yes, you will need a barge pole (literally :pac::pac: ). Oh, and at 14t, don't try and stop it with your hand/foot etc....that'll end in tears.

Waterways Ireland infrastructure, from locks to showers and piers the length of the country is good, with lots of hidden gems.

Navigating the rivers and lakes is fun at that speed and you see maps like you did in your Inter Cert which is a hoot. You'll learn the value of a good book as evenings are long, and bedtime is early............and no, there's no phone/data reception in a lot of places....

The advantage of the barge we noticed, at berth on Sat night was that, compared to the cruisers parked around us, that it was far more comfortable/stable. That's the 14t at work again I suspect.

You learn the value of a a kW/h (battery, lights) and a litre of water too ! : WC, shower, sink, cooking, tea etc.....

I'd love to try it in a dryer climate :)

I did get to 'redesigning' the one we had, in my head, over the weekend as a 'lotto project', which got me to thinking.....does anybody make an electric one ? They can be noisy feckers :P It's not as if you don't have the room for a Tesla Powerwall or something...........mmmmmmmmmm

Years ago, I saw a solar /battery operated barge on the canal de midi, basically the roof was solar panels, and the ballast was lead acid batteries..

Is there a reason why the skipper wouldn't have had fenders out in that scenario?

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 15,694 Mod ✭✭✭✭Tabnabs

A steady hand, and fenders won't do anything to stop the hull contacting the walls when travelling at "speed". Tight but plenty of room going through that.

I guess it's just a confident skipper, but I've seen clumsy skippers having their asses saved by having good fenders out.

It doesn't look like there's much speed involved there. Me being just a hobby skipper, I'd have a crew member each side with a loose fender... just in case. :D
