Davy Jones, Manchester-born lead singer with 60s band The Monkees, has died aged 65, his publicist has confirmed.

He died in his sleep at his home in Florida. His publicist, Deborah Robicheau, said he had a massive heart attack.

The band, who included musicians Micky Dolenz, Michael Nesmith and Peter Tork, were famous for hits including Daydream Believer and I'm a Believer.

The Monkees were an American pop band, assembled in 1966.

Early on in his showbusiness career Jones appeared as Ena Sharples's grandson in ITV soap Coronation Street.

Great show, RIP Davy. None of them were musicians when they were hired initially and the show done so well they had to learn their "pretend" instruments so the could go on tour.

Ya see, ya learn something new everyday.....

    The day the music died....

Ahh RIP I only seen him been interviewed on a doco on BBC4 on Saturday about boybands he was the cute one, apparently every boyband has a cute one.

I remember the show when I was a kid, they didn't seem like boys then, but then I seen the footage and went holy sh!t they were a boyband. He seemed a cool enough man talking about his band days.

One of the most underrated bands I've ever heard. Musical heroes of mine since I was a child.

They made four of the best LPs of the 60s
    - Headquarters
    - Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn and Jones Ltd
    - The Birds, The Bees and The Monkees
    - Instant Replay

The first two and the Head soundtrack are pretty good too.

This is very sad news and a big shock. RIP.
