Breaking news there that Eamon o cuiv has resigned from FF

    http://www.rte.ie/news/2012/0229/ocuive.html

    Micheal Martin :

"This afternoon I accepted the resignation of my colleague Éamon Ó Cuív TD from the roles of Fianna Fáil Deputy Leader and Spokesperson on Communications, Energy and Natural Resources.

Éamon's refusal to support the Parliamentary Party's position on the Fiscal Compact meant that it was no longer feasible for him to occupy these roles.

As the Party prepares for a momentous Ard Fheis this weekend, it is my hope that Éamon will continue to work for Fianna Fáil's renewal as he has done over the last twelve months. Our Party has led Ireland's positive and constructive engagement with Europe for generations and I am determined that it continues in this proud tradition."

Fair play to him for at least having a principle. Most of the other spineless fcukers will sit back and ride it out.

He has not resigned from FF. Martin forced him resign as deputy leader.

Fianna Fail plus principles you gotta be kidding me unless you are referring to
Principal as in the total amount borrowed and not paid back but instead bailed out by the state.

I suppose other such FF cretins such as Michael Healy Rae and Mattie McGrath have principles too? There will soon be more Fianna Fail TD's as "independent's" like the bagman than there is as official party td's.

I just heard his interview on Today FM. He was talking about how he intends to stay in Fianna Fail because it's important for him to represent the ordinary voters who support him.

Glad to see his meds are working anyway.

I guess there goes Fianna Fáil's only hope for an Irish return to the British Commonwealth. How will Ireland survive?

PS: 'alt' 'ctrl' ==> áéíóú. 'alt', 'ctrl' and 'shift' ==> ÁÉÍÓÚ. Respect by spelling somebody's name correctly costs nothing.

He wouldn't be the first Dev to be in trouble over a treaty!

Good riddance , hope the total demise of that sham of a party isn't far off.

Incorrect. Éamon Ó Cuív spells his name perfectly correctly. His father was Brían Ó Cuív, the very well-respected professor of early modern Irish who needs no introduction to anybody who has studied early modern Irish literature. Hid grandfather, Shán Ó Caoimh, changed his name to Ó Cuív because he believed (wrongly, in my view) in a simplified spelling form. Nevertheless, this makes Ó Cuív, not Ó Caoimh, very much Éamon Ó Cuív's name.

    Here's Ó Cuív's explanation:

Éamon Ó Cuív: I agree this issue must be looked at. It is very tricky. I come from a long tradition of modernists in this regard and I am often criticised for example for spelling my name “Cuív” because people say there is no “v” in Irish. My view is that modern Irish has a “v”. For example, in this House we regularly used the word “Vótáil”. One could spell it “Bhótáil” but the sensible and modern thing to do is use the “v” instead.
Someone recently wrote to a newspaper criticising the use of “v” in Irish. I asked an Irish scholar who turned up an interesting piece. Apparently, my father was criticised many years ago for using “v” in his name. In his reply, he explained how the litriú simplí came about, because the “cónaighe” and all such forms which would be familiar to people at the beginning of the 20th century were causing chaos to learners. It was difficult to know how to pronounce a word such as “cónaighe” if one did not know the language. In his defence, my father pointed out how this came about, but also pointed out something more interesting. He noted that in the Annals of Inishfallen in 1259 there was a reference to “Corc mac Fínguni í Kymh d’éc Bennact era anmin”, but the spelling for “Caoimh” was “Kymh”. Some people who want me to go back to the older version think it is “Caoimh”, but I am thinking of reverting to “Kymh”.

    19 May 2005, Dáil Éireann

Whatever one may think of Ó Cuív - and I disagree with him - I do admire the rebellious streak in his response, particularly the final line.

Well he changed it in the 2002 election to Cuív, Eamon Ó to be at the top of the ballot

Somebody read The Phoenix about ten years ago.... It still doesn't negate the fact that Ó Cuív is his correct name, because that is his birth name and, as he demonstrated in his 2005 remark, it's a defensible version.

No; just someone whose granny was discommoded (a Myers word, I imagine) when O Cuiv (as he was referred to locally) blew into a Connemara village to run the local forestry co-op.

Quite good spinning by Ó Cuív it would seem, considering the fact he resigned before Micheál Martin sacked him - which would have been personally humiliating for him.

O'Cuiv appears to be a man of principle. I agree with his reason to resign as deputy leader. There is no reason to vote yes in this referendum.

On the other hand, a cynic might argue that he has read runes correctly. The government and FF will fall on this referendum. He got out early and saw how the public is going.

This referendum will fail and it's about time. Finally we have the chance to show some guts and stick it to the EU.

Depends on what you define as "quite good"......more of the usual cop-out and game-playing and deviousness might impress those who like "playing politics" but it's pathetic to those of us who despair when TDs focus more on point-scoring and covering their asses than achieving something for the people of the country.

What a load of bollo*ks. Eamon made it quite clear in an interview on Newstalk this evening that Martin sacked him from the front bench and forced his resignation as deputy leader because he wouldn't blindly toe the party line.

I'm no fan of FF, but I must declare a certain grudging respect for any politician who breaks away from the rest of the party sheep. I wish more politicians would speak up in defence of what they believe in, rather than just play follow the leader.
