Hi we are keeping two pigs for our own consumption and my FIL was telling us that most slaughter houses wont take them unless they are bord bia approved. does anyone know about this?

I can't speak for all abatoirs, but the one we used didn't require this approval. They were, however, quite serious about making sure the registration papers were in order.

No, All you need are the pigs papers, they are nothing to do with Bord Bia which is a marketing organisation.
The Dept of Agriculture is the relevant body.

Are you registered with a pig herd number ??
If not you should apply ASAP and have a number issued...

You can then contact the supplier of your pigs and have them officially moved into your herd...

Come slaughter time it will be easier and cheaper to have them slaughtered.. People who slaughter pigs without the correct numbers being in place charge more and it costs nothing to get the pig herd number so why not have it..

Don't be worried about having the inspection done while you have pigs.. Our DVO didn't mind at all and the inspection was easy and basic..
