Gardai Speed Checks at Night

Couldn't find a relevant forum for these so mods please move if necessary...

Are Gardai able to do hand-held speed checks at night? I never noticed them personally doing it at night time as I figured the speed guns didn't work at dark.

Do the speed guns note your reg and speed or does the Garda have to follow you and pull you over to give you the fine? Think I was caught doing 100 in an 80 earlier oops...

AFAIK Speed Guns work by measuring the distance between the Gun and the Car, the speed is measured by the rate the distance changes between the two so time of day will make no difference.

That said I don't see how they could have taken your reg without pursuing you so you should be alright.

They(GoSafe, not Gardai) have been on marked roads at 5am. I do see them on the way to work.

I was caught at night last year travelling at 80kmph in a 60kmph zone.

I got an 80 Euro fine and two penalty points - and I never noticed the patrol car!

I'm pretty sure that speed guns don't record your reg number. Therefore the Guard has to stop your vehicle to give you the ticket. I might be wrong though.

Try asking in Emergency Services or Legal Discussion.

    They don't eat enough carrots.

You dont see Garda doing speed checks at night cause your driving too fast.
But really maybe they are too busy at night time what with crime never sleeping and have to prioritise . Also no children on the road or schools letting out.

    They're scared of the dark.

Their speed guns don't work at night, they are solar powered.

The older speed guns don' work at night. Gosafe and the newer mobile garda cameras do.

Can the speed guns detect you if your car is red?

An interesting question, is your car a wine red or Liverpool red, if it's the latter I hope you are caught.

    Regards,
    Jim.

The best way to avoid guards catching you speeding at night is to drive around without turning on your headlights.

If the Gard isn't wearing his cap it won't work.

    Generally nighttime is sleep time.

Also a time for racing the squad cars and occasionally writing one off .
