    Abair Leat
The world’s first social network dedicated to the Irish language Abair Leat! has officially launched, which aims to help normalise the use of Irish in casual settings.
The Site is built with the Contain platform, which integrates its language features to make using Irish on the site easier. It includes integrated translation and spelling to allow users with all competencies of Irish to use the site.
It asks users to make posts and comments which contain at least 70pc Irish. The remaining 30pc facilitates non-standard spelling and non-Irish words which may need to be included.

If the creators aren't looking for a grant for it they can do what they want.

I think it's a great idea. Having said that I won't be signing up because I won't understand a word that's posted :D but it'll be a great way for people to further use our national language.

Good Luck with that, Posts in English are not accepted by the site, has to be at least 70% in Irish, the site has an inbuilt translate and spelling/grammer check.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 709 ✭✭✭Robdude

Existing social networking sites already exist in just about every language imaginable. Nothing prevents people from using the English site and posting other languages either.

Here's an article from 3 years ago talking about Facebook expanding into 100+ languages: http://www.globalbydesign.com/blog/2009/03/17/facebook-from-1-to-100-languages-in-two-years/

Beyond that - the people who have an actual use for communicating in Irish are, largely, not the people who use the internet.

    It's a non-solution to a non-problem.

How odd. I've seen loads of people posting in Irish on Facebook. What's stopping people from going there?

Nothing, this site is just aimed at the Irish speaking community specificaly.

Isn't this the same idea that Chris from 'The Apprentice' had, but his was called 'Sprag'?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,207 ✭✭✭The King of Moo

I don't get why some people would get so angry about this. If you don't speak Irish, don't use it. But it's not doing anyone any harm.

I'm not sure how successful it'll be, but good luck to them, I applaud any attempt to make the language more interesting and accessible.

I think it's a great idea. I hated Irish in school, but recently went back to learn it, and love it. I'll be signing up.

I can't see that taking off. Although it might be helpful for secondary school students wishing to improve their grasp of the language.

If the TG4 Presenter Babes couldn't get me speaking Irish, a Facebook clone won't Tuiseal my Ginideach .

They can dream on if they're hoping to get 50,000 sign-ups by the end of the year. Nothing more than a free-hosted blog created with Kontain, one of the beginner blog templates (but does look pretty). Will not rank for meaningful keywords on Google as a result so can expect no consequential targeted traffic.

Unless they have serious guerilla marketing/PR stunts afoot, huge money behind them (doubtful as it's a free host) to spúnk on AdWords campaigns & feverish general promotion it's destined to fail. Can't find a social media hookup (eg. FB 'like', 'Tweet', Google + buttons) on there even.

    Doomed.

OP: has this project been registered as a business (thus resulting in, at the very least, a website grant of up to €1000 depending on county)?

What in the name of sweet baby Jesus is a non - solution to a non problem. That makes no sense at all.
How do know a large percentage of native speakers don't use the internet. Have you asked them all. Doubtful. And maybe they'd use it more if they had an Irish social networking site.

Maybe they're referring to the observation that the vast majority of your posts reference the Irish language. Like I said before if you started as many threads about how great Israel is you'd have folks thinking you were a mossad plant. Gael Linn plant maybe? :)

As for the site, good luck to them. It'll rise or fall on merit and a fair bit of luck. So long as they're not looking for government grants for the place fair play.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

Íosa Chríost, tá an suíomh sin ag cur as dom. Ní cheadaítear 'post' a dhéanamh muna bhfuil ar a laghad 70% de igceart, ó thaobh an Gaeilge de. Ní haon drochsmaoineamh é sin, ar ndóigh, ach tá an foclóir nó cíbé rud a bhfuil acu go húafásach. Deireann sé go bhfuil focail a bhfuil ceart mícheart, agus fiú má phiocann tú ceann de na moltaí a thugann siad duit ó liosta, fós deireann sé go bhfuil sé mícheart!
Ní oibríonn an rogha gan aird a thabhairt air ach oiread.

Jesus, that site is annoying me. A post must be at least 70% correct, as far as the Irish is concerned, before one is allowed to post it. That isn't a bad idea, but whatever software they're using to check it is awful. It's saying that correct words are incorrect, and even using their spellchecker, if you choose one of the words they suggest, it's still marked wrong!
The "Ignore word" option doesn't work either.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,775 ✭✭✭✭Princess Consuela Bananahammock

Preaching to the choir again, I'm afraid. Do the Irish speakers really need somthing like this?

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

That's a real pity F. If it's putting off fluent folks like yourself, it's really gonna put off genuinely interested newbs who might want to jump in. They're the people it needs to attract. Is there a contact link or mods you could have a quiet word with? Maybe not such a quiet word... "WTF" as Gaelige springs readily. ;) Maybe suggest a two tier site, with one for newbs without the overly strident(and wrong)spellchecker? Or just get people to mod it. I'm sure they'd have plenty of takers. Better yet direct people to Teach Na nGealt here where all that's set up anyway.

No but Irish does, if it's gonna thrive beyond the current fashion for Gaelscoils. So IMH it's a good idea, but needs more thought and needs to be more organic and grassroots. Exclusion like this will make it fall flat on it's arse.

Aye, déanfaidh mé iarracht dul i dteagmháil leo, Wibbs. Ach feicim nach dtugtar focail le thuas-litreacha san áireamh, so is féidir an 'workaround' sin a úsáid ar a laghad...

Aye, I'll try to contact them, Wibbs. Though I see that they ignore words in capitals, so for the moment one can use that workaround...
