No sound or windows update woking

    I have a Dell inspiron 1520 with vista, the sound has stopped woking along with the windows updating, any ideas, i've ran all the fixes from microsoft site and still no luck :(

    (Re)Install the latest drivers (Sigmatel?) from the Dell support webiste.

    Do they have the Dell diagnostic utility? F12 boot mrnu > Diagnostic?

    At least you can test whether or not the hardware (sound chip and speakers) is OK.

    You could try a SYSTEM restore to the last time is was working OK !!

    Brrrr. I don't have one of these laying around, you know. ;)

    But it is pretty straight forward, IIRC. Press F12 at the POST (DELL Logo) Screen and up comes the boot menu, the last option should be Diagnostics. Just run it. It will perform a bunch of tests, one of them for the sound. I believe you can skip/cancel irrelevant tests.
