Complaining to BAI

I was considering complaining to BAI re the advertising clip shown for "tallafornia" in which a girl calls someone a particular vulgarity.

I was brought up to believe that this particular word, phrased in this manner was an expletive - yet here it is being broadcast on every commercial break on programming aimed for family viewing- and before watershed.

I consider it pointless however if BAI have no power to issue penalties or warnings to the broadcaster.

Surely BAI should perform the same duties as ofcom in the uk and hand out stiff fines for breaking watershed, or showing offensive material.

You need to first contact TV3 through their complaints form. They will issue a reply. If you are not satisfied then you need to contact the BAI. The BAI will ask them to apologize on air, if they agree with you.

Allow me, it's not very obvious.

    http://www.tv3.ie/corporate.php

    C'mon, what was the word?

BTW, I know my TV has an off button....but seriously, Tallafornia?

Ah! I was wondering where their complaints form was on their site, nicely hidden away.

The OP didn't say he watched Tallafornia. He might have been watching Xpose when the promo appeared on his telly.

    I assume she call some a **** or a bollock. I am guessing ****.

What was the word and at what time of day did you hear it?

Well we assume between 7am to 9pm. You could argue that the kids are in school, but i doubt that tv3 carefully edit there ads between 9am and 2:30 and keeping an eye on school hols.

It was 7pm on Saturday evening - was visiting the folks at the time - i hadn't control of the remote and changed channel shortly afterwards - don't get me wrong - I don't expect dialogue to be airy fairy - but there was no point to it

Word was vulgar slang for lady of the night - of u saw an ad advertising tallafornia u would have heard it

Ah! you mean a prostitute :D

Channel 4 removed the word Hooker from an episode of friends during its pre-watershed schedule.

I thought that word was OK if preceded by the word 'CUTE'. I am certain I have heard it many times on the 6 O'Clock news when dicussing politicians from a particular party.

She didn't use the word cute or look cute saying it lol - I'm sure her parents are so proud -> of course they are, sure she must have made a packet from it ... In fairness I'd probably do same if someone drove a dumptruck full of money up to my house - I'm not made of stone!

If he did, they are probably too busy dealing with RTE to respond to him? :)

TV3 have to respond first to him before the BAI will take a look.

Why? I don't really understand why people aren't entitled to complain about the use of a word or phrase, which may not be suitable for family viewing.

As for Tallafornia it is purely TV3 trying to make out that they aren't an old fuddy-duddy TV channel, the problem with that pretense is the fact that it carries so many Family ITV programmes. Channel 4 TV3 is not.

There is a difference between being a "Mary Whitehouse" and having a genuine compaint about the watershed. If unsuitable content goes out before the watershed then audience have the right to complain.

I some how doubt that Mary Whitehouse or David Norris have many of the same views. You never know Mary Whitehouse may not agree with David's view
I would like to ask for a general debate on the standards in Irish life and what our values are, and I say that having looked at a programme called Tallafornia which is both compulsive and repulsive viewing.

I mean it is really seriously drink sodden programme where young people in my opinion are exploited, three young men, three young women. They're put in an atmosphere of continual drinking, they're encouraged to behave licentiously, they compete to bring people home to bed them. And eh the last episode was really obnoxious in that eh one of these young women who had an interest in somebody who wasn't particularly interested in her managed to bring somebody back to the house and the other guys decided to gang up and take a bet on whether she could be taken from him.

And there was simulated relations sexual activity, leaving eventually to full thing and I just wonder what kind of values this is inculcating in people, and if it's appropriate to eh and the language I have to say is something which even in my neck of the woods I wasn't entirely familar with on a habitial basis.

Mary ****ing whitehouse, sorry let me repeat that mary ****ing whitehouse, I am being ****ing censored by the ****s at boards.ie the ***** ;)

Tv3 said whore is not vulgar slang and is not listed in the Oxford dictionary as such, therefore it is ok for transmission before watershed.

I suppose it wasn't the word I took offense to - but the insult - it shouldn't have been broadcast in an ad for the show or should have been bleeped on pre watershed hours.

Not that Im easily offended and don't watch any brain dead muck - I love family guy!! But this is just plain crap.

Sorry Whore was the word. If you still feel that way about it then you go to the BAI. I would just to annoy the BAI :)

    For **** sake :)

My point is that we are censored on boards when we use certain words, which some people might find vulgar.

Tallaghfornia was brought up by Senator David Norris in the Seanad because of how vulgar it was.

I think it's funny that you are complaining about someone complaining about the use of a word on TV before the watershed when there are many words that are censored on boards. I think there is a certain irony. That was why I was acting bizzarely.

Trust me - haven't given it a moments notice, just said I'd give you some feedback.

Still not sure why in this day and age you feel the need to complain to the BAI about it.

Just a bit eighties and Mary Whitehouse - but then again I made that point previously.

Certain words being banned on boards has nothing to do with it !!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,641 ✭✭✭✭Elmo

And I pointed out that Senator David Norris complained about Tallafornia on TV3, I doubt that you could think that Senator David Norris has a similar prudish out look to Mary Whitehouse. But then I made that point a while back.

IMO it is a free world and if you want to complain about a word or phase on pre-watershed TV then you should be allow to be offended and yes to complain. And I think it is a bit Mary Whitehousish of Boards to star-out bad language.

The UK are much more strict on bad language on TV then here in Ireland. You will rarely hear bad language used on UK soaps, and TV stations in the UK are fined for the use of bad language (pre-watershed).

And as I pointed out before Comedy Central and E4 edit Friends. A show that comes from a country with even stricter rules surrounding bad language. I think that is far more Bizzare. Comedy Central even blanked Red from "That 70's Show" from saying "ass", imagine
