Was getting a fill of diesel earlier in my local Topaz, when I spotted a youngish lady (late to mid twenties) in obvious distress at the side of the cashier point.

The manageress was making her fill out some form, and she was showing her ID, looked like she had forgot her purse/money or whatever.

Anyways, I paid up, and upon leaving I asked her was everything ok?

Turns out she filled her car with thirty euro worth of petrol, and thought her laser card was in her purse, but it wasn't, and she only had a fiver on her.

I did what IMO was the decent thing to do, and paid her fuel for her.

She took my card,(business card) and promised to pay me the money later on this evening.

I hope she does the decent thing, and doesn't let me down!

    What you guys think?

Was what I just did for her an act of kindness, or an act of foolishness?

    Your move karma!

Risky. I would not have done it.

The petrol station would have had ways to deal with this with out any undue stress on her.

Call a friend, leave a valuable item and go get the money. And so on.

Its happened to me a few times. Never a big deal. They have your reg plate.

She pays back the petrol station or she pays back you. What's the difference?

Dunno tbh, think she felt like she was being treated like a criminal/stupid in the topaz.

Anyway, its done now, she doesn't come back, my foolish fault. Won't put me in the poor house either way.

What you did was an act of kindness, not foolishness. That will remain true whether or not she contacts you and pays you back. You did the right thing with karma; let's hope for her sake she does the same.:):)

You did a nice thing OP. I hope she does the right thing and gives you a shout back and has your cash for you.

I've been that flustered bint before filling the car and realising I had no card with me. There are some decent people still around. Similar situation where a guy paid for mine too, I was so greatfull too as the garage was nowhere near my house. Hope she does the decent thing :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,873 ✭✭✭Skid

The Petrol Station attendant seemed to be dealing with the Situation very professionally.

She would have returned later with the cash to pay them, I'm sure it happens regularly.

And then you opened a thread to tell us all about it.

Sorry, no Blue Peter Badge for you.

This could be a porno plot, OP if she turns up later in a skirt that resembles a belt and stockings on with an 80's soundtrack in the background you may have some explaining to do to your wife!

Mmmmm yeah it sounds like the petrol station had it covered seeing as she was filling in forms..

And their way would probably have been more convenient than her having to call up a stranger and arrange to meet him etc.. plus she was probably mortified that you intervened..

Sorry to p1ss on the parade like :o

It was a nice thing to do OP, most wouldn't I know that I wouldn't have but then I don't trust other people, particularly when it comes to money as it often brings out the worst in people.

I do hope that she comes back and gives you the money, after all you did her a very nice turn, if that was me I would be handing back the money and a nice box of choccies to say thanks.

I always check when getting out of the car to fill petrol to make sure that I have cash in my pocket or my card. Even of I know i have it on me, I just double check to avoid the embarrassment of the above sitation.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,176 ✭✭✭Jess16

What a lovely thing to do :) Though it sounds like she was hankering for a help out to be honest. If I was in that situation and a stranger asked if I was ok, I would simply smile and say yes thank you and then continue with fixing the problem myself. She had no need to accept your money when I'm sure there are measures to address this situation in filling stations all the time.

Daughter works in a petrol station, this happens all the time, they don't go down the route of the Gardai for 48 hours to give people a chance to return and settle up! Daughter mentioned it recently and after a particularly busy Saturday commented that the safe must be like a pawnbrokers with all the valubale items "on hold"!!

It was a very nice thing to do, I would have!!! ;);)

A wise man (my Daddy:P) once told me never lend money you cant afford to lose and I reckon he is right,
Hope she pays you back though,
I filled my car before and went inside to pay, atm was broken and they had no credit card facility, they were sound, said you are on camera, pay before tomorrow and you are sound, happens a lot i am sure!

This is a very old trick used by a group of people who travel a lot in Ford Transits with amber lights on the top. They also like to live in caravans.
I saw women doing this in England every week my local filling station.
It always amused me how many men fell for it.

Petrol stations deal with this a lot. They simply get her to fill out details such as name, address, contact number and car details. Car would have been on camera anyway. They then usually say come back with 24 hours with the full amount. Genuine people return and those who don't have their details passed on the guards.

Cameras cover all the forecourt so they will have a picture of your face when filling the car along with a pic of reg etc. It's easier to have all other info such as name, address and number for guards. I've had to do it all before. When I ring the guards about it the odd time, they are usually helpful and glad of the extra details. All it takes is a call from the guards then to the person who suddenly rushes down to pay and it's left at that. No charges made by guards or company unless the person refuses to pay. It's usually just a reminder.

I used to ring people myself after the 24 hours have passed but 90% still wouldn't show with the money which is why I would generally ring the guards with details after the time agreed. People are far quicker when a guard rings them that an employee in the petrol station.

    Why OP???

She was essentially being given credit by the petrol station, same as we buy many other products and services daily. It's not that big of a deal.

    Update.

The girl in question just left my front door, €30 in a thank you card, bottle of white wine and a €4 quick pick on the lotto lol!

It turns out that the manageress couldn't have been less helpful, and made her feel very, very uncomfortable by telling her a good number of times that her face was on camera, and she would be checking the reg on her car in case it was false.
Can't really blame her tbh, I know a few scams are in operation these days.

Anyways, ails well that ends well!;)

Fair play to you op, you obviously got her out of a bit of bother and she clearly appreciated it. Bottle of wine and quick pick were a nice touch, you never know you might even get lucky for being a good samaritan.
