RTE is for people without the BBC:D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,633 ✭✭✭✭murpho999

I prefer to watch RTE as I like to hear an Irish viewpoint and I prefer the analysis and not have constant referring to England all the time.

HD on BBC is better though!

Watch BBC mainly for match coverage but switch over to RTE for analysis because its more entertaining.

BBC analysis is so bad , no in depth discussion

Hook and co may get it wrong a lot but at least they make a fist of dissecting the game

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,586 ✭✭✭Ardillaun

Give thanks and praise you are not in Canada. They are showing it tomorrow on
Sportsnet. Setanta's successor over here had no PPV option for the game today that I could find. Many of the 'online rugby' sites are rip-off merchants and even the ones that actually show the matches live can't tell you when you can see the recording.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,599 ✭✭✭ScrubsfanChris

BBC has (5.1)surround sound for most games, RTE doesn't.

Having seen both, the HD picture quality is generally better on BBC than RTE.

I've given up on most tv analysis, so can't comment on that.

Watch matches that dont involve Ireland on BBC in HD, watch commentary on RTE.

Yeah he was good but it is so hard to take his comments seriously when he is still in the game. At one stage he said ''for me Sexton, Kearney and Reddan were excellent today'' which was true but these guys are also his team mates.

He is good but his insights can seem biased even if not intended.

    BBC for HD

I struggle to watch BBC commentary. I find that no one has "real" opinions and that anything even remotely controversial is said off camera. It lacks punch and even though Hook has poorly formed opinions based on a flawed understanding of the game - at least he has the capacity to cause some contention and controversy.

BBC can be lifeless too - accurate but lifeless and as someone mentioned, they refer back to the English team (almost like it has to be referenced x times per 15 minutes) at far too regular and unnecessary instances.

The image quality is better on BBC, and the Irish in-game commentary is poor if you really know the game. I remember around 2/3 years ago hearing Conor O'Shea run in-game commentary on RTE and it was distractingly brilliant. But aside from this I still prefer watching the game with commentators that are mildly biased towards the green.

Neither are bad regardless and the important thing is that you can watch it anywhere. Unlike the bloody HC.

BBC. Picture is way better (which is strange as its probably the same feed) but I cant take Ryle Nugent or hook or any of them really.Think Horgan is terrible tbh. Himself and Frankie Sheehan drive me mad. O'Shea is about RTE's only redeeming feature tbh

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,831 ✭✭✭GSF

Ryle Nugent is awful. Hugh Cahill isnt much better. Blackrock Broadcasting Corporation at its worst. Pundits on RTE are entertaining in a panto type way though.

Why anyone would watch any sport on any British channel when there is another option is beyond me. Their coverage is closer to propaganda than it is to analysis.
I would only ever do it for comedy value after England have just been hammered.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,019 ✭✭✭Badgermonkey

    Brian Moore's analysis is great.

Unfortunately, he's often paired with Eddie Butler.

Bring back Nigel Starmer-Smith I say.

    RTE2 HD for me

A gent who not only commentates fairly and with knowledge but actually does some research into how to pronounce a player's name.

RTE for coverage/punditry then over to BBC for the match (for HD and avoidance of Nugent or Hamilton commentary).

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 28,119 Mod ✭✭✭✭Podge_irl

Brian Moore is my favourite commentator by some margin and him and Butler make a very entertaining team.

How on earth anyone accuses the BBC of favourtism towards England in comparison to our coverage is utterly beyond me. They're analysis is fairly banal (though still better then Hook) but their commentary teams are excellent. Except for Andy Nichol anyway.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 84 ✭✭cork exile in london

anything with hook is grating on the nerves. same as dunphy.
bbc is far better build ups and main factor is no adverts. must admit though i find phil mathews boring for irish games.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,813 ✭✭✭golfball37

RTE is pure tripe, self serving jingoistic nonsense with no balance. if they had a panelist from the opposing country on every week it would be watchable but they trot out the usual lets discuss Ireland to death cringfest everytime. At least the BBC give equal coverage to each nation.

RTE didn't even know or care the match in Paris was called off a few weeks ago as they were busy getting their soundbytes out. BBC viewers knew 15 mins before kick off.

if you want to watch panto propaganda watch RTE, if you want to watch Rugby switch on BBC.

I always used to watch the BBC for the pictures and RTE for the half time, acknowledging that BBC commentary is bland, but still better than that little Nugent guy!

Now I am in London and all Sky'd and smart TV'd up, I can have the BBC HD pictures, but overridden with the radio 5-live commentary (which is much better than the TV commentary).

I would love then to be able to switch to RTE for the halftime Hook-show, but alas, now I am n London, no more RTE! The radio 5 guys are much better than the TV guys anyway

(though I did enjoy Woody's look of envy at Castro's flowing locks - one of the papers this morning decribed the look as one that someone would give a chocolate cake covered in fresh strawberries and hot custard!!!)

EDIT: and I completely agree with the poster above. People give out to the BBC for talking about England, but they give good coverage to everyone. In comparisonm, RTE is the most inward looking, parochial coverage there is!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 85 ✭✭thetruth_time

rte ryle nugent?? What a plank, tom mcgurk is worse! Hook is insane, pope average, but o'shea top class as is horgan, bbc guscott is very biased and annoying the rest are good i have to say.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,884 ✭✭✭Rattlehead_ie

    BBC 90% of the time.
Pretty much Ryle Nugent, I can't stand him.
Was happy to watch the Irish game on RTE without him commentating.
Although listening to English commentate on English rugby can be horrible at time, its better than Nugent.

I agree. Having current players as pundits is a bad idea. you could see how uncomfortable Castro was on the BBC having to comment on team-mates and how they played. They are never going to be open about what they really think

during the game it took him about 2 mins to spit out a sentence...like the guy and did well when he had time to think about what he was talking but during the game was stuttering all over the show

The thing that gets me is this. It is the BBC not the English Broadcasting Corporation.
The Welsh and Scots I know get mighty peed off by this.
England first, second, third and the rest way down the list.

Agree with the comments about the radio commentators, far superior IMHO.

RTE TV rugby coverage needs a shake up.

No, its not. Thats why BBC Wales, BBC Scotland and BBC Northern Ireland all cover the Six Nations.
If games clash, the corresponding BBC branch will show the relevant Six Nations game.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 992 ✭✭✭MrDerp

RTE for hi-jinks studio coverage, BBC for the match. During 6n time I've typically spent my entire Friday at work reading any piece of analysis I can find, so I don't need to hear the pundits annoying me while I build myself up for kickoff.

Watching the others give Hooky a stroke, before and after, is all part of the match day for me.

Each game is a stand alone fixture.

This is beside the point anyway. The BBC is the British Broadcasting Corporation. Not the "English" BC as you alluded. If that bugs some Scots, Welsh or Northern Irish then they should get their own TV channel and fund it with their own licence-fee revenue.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,572 ✭✭✭WeeBushy

I don't like watchin Ireland games on the BBC, dunno why as their coverage is better imo. Everything else I watch on the beeb.

Well you made the incorrect point about games clashing. Not me.

Indeed you are correct the BBC is the British Broadcasting Corporation.
Which Includes Wales, Scotland and N. Ireland. Do you agree ???

The Welsh, Scots and N. Irish do contribute to the BBC through a licence fee.
Maybe thats why some feel a little miffed.

If their regional versions of BBC were to be funded purely by licence fee revenue in their own principalities, they would barely be able to run.
If these people are miffed, they should take a look a little deeper at the alternative option which would be an underfunded TV station.
    "English BBC" indeed . . .

Your talking like the regions outside England are being funded by England and as such should be happy with having a TV station at all. They are part of the BBC the same as the main channels.

To draw a comparison you may as well say Connact fans can have no expectations when it comes to rugby as Munster, Leinster and Ulster are responsible for most of the provincial revenue for the IRFU. They should be happy to have a team at all never mind a decent one.

Is that what your getting at ?

Hasn't been a clash since Sky had the rights to England's home games, I'd say that's going back to 2002, 2003 maybe? Open to correction on this.

Edit; I watch the BBC but go to RTE for the punditry. Brian Moore is the best co-commentator I reckon and not completely one-eyed in favour of England, calls a spade a spade. I found it very hard to listen to Ralph Keyes on Saturday. (Flicked on to Scotland v France on RTE yesterday, heard George Hamiltion, flicked back very quickly. Good lord.)

It does seem that some commentators and pundits on the BBC coverage take it as read that the England rugby is the 'home' team, unless where stated.
You never get 2 Scots, or 2 Welsh in studio, except when they are specifically brought in to speak on behalf of their own nations.

It's understandable that when someone (even a Kiwi like Popey) says 'us' in the studio that we know he means Ireland. After all, who else is listening to RTE ?
But when some guy on the BBC says 'us' he means England, as if no-one else in the world is watching the BBC coverage, EVEN in Wales !!

A mistake never made when Bill McLaren was commentating !

Sky are worse, all their regular UK pundits are former English players.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,102 ✭✭✭monkeybutter

The Ryle and Frankie show stunk the place out for the England vs Wales game. I had to switch over after they were scolding wales for their poor slow play when they were gridning up the pitch a man down, playing down the clock, ha ha, rubbish commentary. It was the winning of the match.

Anything but Hook for me. He actually winds me up, I can't listen to him without wanting to put my boot through the TV.
