As an aside note, go and measure your waist with a measuring tape. You may be shocked to find out its no way near your trouser size!
I always thought I was a size 34 only to measure my waist and find I'm 37.5 inches!! Major shock and a LONG way from the perfect 'adonis' waist size. I'm 5'10" and should 'ideally' have a 31.2 inch waist!!
On a good note, my shoulders are 47 inches. They should be 50.6

51.25 inch shoulders and 33 inch waist at 5'10. How do I umm...measure up?? Weh weh weh.

...incidentally, I like to judge my overall shape by how close my waist at its smallest is (just above belly button) compared to my belly button. Down to a 0.5 inch differential now :)

I'm guessing this is based on the golden ratio or very close to it.

Yeah, golden ratio based on the number phi.
    1:1.618 or so

Is pie not the root cause of a lot of the big bellies?

This is probably vanity sizing at work http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vanity_sizing
More common with womens clothing where there is no actual inch or cm used so easier to get away with.

I think this adonis ratio/index was gotten by measuring old sculpted statues, but these are often disproportionate, I read since some statues are larger than life they make them disproportionate on purpose -or just for aesthetics.

So it would be sort of like civilisation tumbling and people finding photoshopped images of models in todays world and figuring out a "cosmopolitan index" which would not necessarily be a "healthy ratio" or an attractive index to have.

The other way around. It comes from maths originally. Long before those statues. People dicovered it was was aesthetically pleasing and it was used for architecture and statues etc.

But its been proven that traits that are considered attractive are those that approach the golden ratio. It applies to much more than weight, size, even position of eyes, nose, mouth etc. But the ratio is precise because of maths, what actually pleasing to look at has a tolerance on it. I wouldn't worry about.

Your photoshoped picture example doesn't really work as theres no basis for a string of piss ratio. ;)

    In short: who cares!

Genetics play a larger part in it than anything else I would imagine.

Just train, stay fit and do your best.
