Hi lads, I bought the half price stuff in Holland and Barrett yesterday. They said it can be used for muscle building, recovery or fat loss. This is the red one now. I want to use if for recovery and weight loss but more so recovery. He said for weight loss have it with milk in the morning instead of breakfast or at lunch instead of a meal. He then said to have it straight away after exercise (15-20mins) with water. Is this right. is it any exercise like swimming etc that you would have it after. Is it sensible to have a shake instead of breakfast. Would really appreciate a second opinion on this?

Yes, after exercise you do want to consume some protein but this does not have to be a powdered supplement. In fact, if at all possible try to get all your dietry requirements from real food.

The reason people use protein powders is simply convenience. It is alot easier chuck down a protein shake as you leave the gym on the way to work, rather than sit down to a chicken salad! If given the option always choose good quality whole foods over supplements.

Whey protein is not a magic weight loss (or gain for that matter) supplement, it is just another source of protein.

If you want to lose weight eat good quality food, be more active in your daily life, and for accelerated results lift heavy weights.

First place to start: read through nutrition stickies and then read them again. Put as much of it into practice as you can, and be patient!

    Good luck.

Hi thanks for the reply. The protein was bought so I dont want to waste it now. What way should I take it to lose weight. Would I be better off having a shake in the morning instead of a bowl of porridge/rice krispies/weetabix? How many scopes do I put in and how much milk/water should I add. Also, the same applies at night. What way should I use it to benefit me the most.

Also, you say lift heavy weights. Does this not put on muslce. Would I not be better off doing a lot of cardio to speed up my results and maybe lifitng light weights and doing them at a fast pace??

    Thanks.

Yeah probably, but I'd imagine a bowl of berries, nuts, and greek yoghurt would be a lot nicer than a shake.

Just take it when you need something to eat but don't have access to good food (e.g. straight after a workout).

Could you explain more please. Am I trying to lose weight. Would cardio not be much better. Is there not a fear that too much weights would increase my weight.

Also, I am trying to improve my diet. It has been fairly poor but what do ye make of today so far.

10am Porridge. couple of slices of an mandarine with it.

2pm. Chicken and Bacon caeser wrap.

4pm. Irish yogurt. Blackcurrant and blackberry flavour and an apple.

What should I eat for the rest of the day? I will be stuck in college for the until 10 so it is unlikely that I will have a dinner. I have the choice to have another wrap or sandwhich, some fruit, another yogurt and maybe some seeds. Would appreciate the help.

    Have you read the stickies?

Have you worked out what your maintance calories are?

Are you logging your food on fitday or myfitnesspal?

You're trying to lose body fat, not weight. You may well indeed lose weight, but the goal should be to get rid of body fat.

Getting toned/in shape = a combination of low body fat and a degree of muscle (we're not talking bodybuilder here)

Cardio leaves you weak and frail, and makes you looks like a saggier version of "fat" you.

Weight training makes you look healthy, fit and toned.

Until you've figured out how many kcals you're eating daily and how many you SHOULD be eating, you're not really trying.

I've fairly polarized things here - but I'm trying to make a point.

Quick question...not saying your wrong Im pretty new to this!
Say for example you are tracking your food intake on my fitness pal eating the correct food no junk etc doing body weight exercises and running roughly 6k 3 times a week...is the running doing harm...surely its a good thing?

Not really no, but like I said - polarizing!! :)

I'd pick strength training and diet over diet and running any day, but it kind of depends what makes you tick and which you'll actually stick to.

I think it's a case of education as much as anything else - people are so used to hearing "cardio for weight loss" and "weights make you bulky" that they think it's an either/or sort of thing, when both have their place depending on training goals.

    What I ate today.

    10am porridge
    2pm chicken and bacon wrap
    4pm Irish yoghurt and apple
7pm. Tin of sardines, banana, strawberry yoghurt. 500ml of orange juice
10pm. Chicken with lettuce, tomatoe, cheese, potato salad.

Could someone tell me if this is healthy eating. Maybe I ate the salad too late. But overall I think it isn't so bad. would ye agree? And please don't tell me to count the calories. Just don't have time at the minute.

Read the stickies and educate yourself and stop expecting everyone to spoon feed you- we all have busy lives too!
You wouldn't even read the label on the back of your protein to find out how to use it, insisted on repeatedly asking people here instead.

If you have time to type into boards all your responses, then you have time to read the stickies.

And just remember that whey protein is just a by product of milk - thats it. Its dairy, not a magic pill and it wont put muscle on you!

Id try and go about estimating your kcals yesterday, its not that hard and it wont take long and once you get used to it you will be able to roughly do it in your head without any app or website

So what did the stickies say about how many calories you should be consuming?

Look, your going to have to be willing to learn for yourself and not be fed answers of ye that's good or no that's bad because it's really not as simple as that and there are often disagreements so you'll have to learn for yourself and then make up your own mind or figure out what's best for you. Read the stickies properly, some of it you may know but you will learn from it if you actually take time and read it properly.

You clearly didn't read the stickies if you learnt nothing. There is a lot of excellent information in them.

Attacking posters that don't spoon feed you stuff because you're lazy is a bad start to trying to get in shape. If you're not even bothered to read for i'd say 15 minutes I don't see you sticking with any sort of exercise or nutrition.

Do yourself a favour and stop being a muppet to people who are trying to give you some help albeit not the help you want but you're in college judging by one of your posts and you shouldn't have to be spoon fed.
