Would you want your club's biggest rivals to go into liquidation?

    Thoughts?

I don't subscribe hugely to rivalries myself, but for those that do, I'd be interested to see if people would rather see their biggest rivals fall from grace, over and above both teams remaining financially healthy and competing each year. I would say it would be a hollow victory of sorts; a great feeling initially, until the realisation kicks in that glorious victories of the past may never again be mirrored, in terms of significance.

Or are there any that could offer insight from their personal experiences; any Southampton fans to give insight post Pompey's demise; similarly Man U fans re: Leeds. etc.

Would you like your club's biggest rival to go into administration/liquidation. 46 votes

    Yes, without a doubt.

To be honest, I'd fucking love it if they did.

    I wouldn't cry about it :)

No because without rivals there is no fun in the sport. You want competition and to be tested to the best of your abilities.
Take whats going on in Scotland as an example. If Rangers were to disappear completely (extreme I know) Celtic would over time become weaker and weaker. In my opinion.

Disappear completely is not what the OP suggested though.

Rangers will never disappear btw, they are one the biggest clubs in Britain

I would rather see our biggest rivals on their knees on the pitch after getting a good hiding during 90mins of football .

Everything else off the pitch and non football related matters should be left to the idiots that put the club in trouble the first place.

At the end of the day its the honest decent fan that suffers when a club is run badly . and the league as a whole suffers when clubs are not been run correctly .

As a Liverpool fan I wouldn't be too upset, but it would suck not having those epic games where nothing matters but winning.

However, if a club like Chelsea or Man City ever went into administration I would love it, having built their success almost solely on billionaire owners

Would take a lot of the fun and excitement away from the big games.

Could also take away some of the pain, and tears. :)

True but even if they went down a couple of divisions for a a few years it could be detrimental to Celtic until they come back up. The same could be said of any league where a small number of clubs have dominated for years.

Nah I wouldn't like to see it.
That's not to say that if it were to happen I wouldn't get a little kick out of it, but all the same it's not something I would like to see happen at all.

Would I like to see Sunderland go into liquidation??

Yes, yes I would :) at least if it was through idiotic business decisions and general financial mismanagement, just because a company is a football club they don't get immunity from (supposedly) being run sensibly.

As a football fan, I'd never wish for any football club to go into administration.

I'm a Liverpool supporter, I've no interest in the finances of any other club.

Unless someone out there is thinking about handing us around 20 m for Stewart Downing ! Them I'm very interested ; )

As a Bohs fan, no. There really is nothing like the same atmosphere or the same intensity in any other game. There's also no better feeling than beating Rovers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,181 ✭✭✭Iang87

I answered yes because I hate our current rivals. I also know that If they go away we'll get new rivals.

I'm a Liverpool fan and know the history of the rivalry with Manchester outside of football so nothing would probably match that again but yeah rivals would be formed out of success on the football field rather than what goes on off the field. Imo the arsenal united rivalry was mainly formed out of success and was incredible watching during the Keane Vieira years

    Bohs fan...
No I do want Rovers in the Premier Division. I want them to be worse than us but not non-existent. Keep your friends close and your enemies closer...

I would rather see Man United head into a downward spiral, get relegated and spend a few decades in the lower half of the Conference.

But I would be happy enough to see them go into Liquidation, I could live with that :)

(I'm a Liverpool fan, by the way)

Nah wouldn't wish liquidiation on any club. Even Celtic.

I would love to see those oil baron clubs get justice served to them.

    Karmic justice.

Banging in the money cheat in Football Manager shouldn't be allowed in real life.

strange when united/barca/madrid/milan/inter/juve were spending massive amounts of money on players it was fine cos money doesn't buy success. Money can buy great players not necessarily great teams

No, beating Pats is too enjoyable, home and away. Particularly as they turn up in numbers, speaking from a person who sits in the Square side of the West Stand.

Of course, most clubs that go into liquidation deserve it. I would love to see Real Madrid and Liverpool go into liquidation.

Wouldn't mind some bigger clubs being knocked down a peg or two if i'm honest. I was gonna say I'd love to see manchester utd go into administration but like saul-goode says those big games are just too exciting to not have each season:D

and to be honest some of the "bigger" clubs who have built their success without billionaire owners seem to be doing a good enough job of wrecking themselves without administration anyway:p

Nothing to with missing derbies. New rivalries would form. I just wouldn't wish that on other decent supporters.

I'd get a laugh from it in parts I'm sure, but given the near miss that Liverpool had a couple of years ago I wouldn't wish that on anyone.

Yes. It's great to see them scurrying about in the hole they're currently in

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,033 ✭✭✭✭Richard Hillman

When Shamrock were in the poo poo, i didnt want them to go bust but wish they did now. Couldnt be bothered with what happens to Bohs, if they went out of existence i wouldnt be arsed. I was delighted when Cork City ceased to exist. With Torpedo Fingal, i know a lot of Shels fans dont like to admit it but we did have a short term rivalry. Nothing was more pleasing to see them go bust. I kind of like our thing with Pats because they are still raging over the 2001-2 season. I would miss being reminded of it :D

As a Shels fan, after what happened with the reaction to our temporary downfall, its hard to find sympathy for other clubs. FTA!

Think the Celtic banners at the Hibs match were a bit over the top.
    Especially the second one here.

No. I'd feel bad for the people who would lose out because of it. Mainly the working class people who would lose their jobs, directly and indirectly. And I'm not a bitter ****.

We call it Shelegation in Ireland. Its funny in a way you get a new team with the same fans and the same players/history and 0 debts.

So i dont mind it as they always come back i see it as punishment for "cheating". In UK its different and unlikely to happen the same way as here, well it sort of would. Assuming Rangers die and FC Rangers is born in the highland league...i assume thats the same? Only they play in a Ibrox.

I would hate to see a club die as not many do.....except Gretna and some other lower league teams but they generally come back if they have history in some form.

I've never heard anyone other than a Pats fan use that term. No fans of clubs that win trophies use it thats for sure. That rules out most clubs other than Pats. Maybe Salthill Devons fans use it too.

Either way, we didn't go into administration or liquidation.

The reaction isnt just about Rangers having an insolvency event.

Do you remember the mood in Scotland to when Celtic were hours from going out of existence?
    hearse.jpg

That pictures sums up it up pretty well. Celtic recovered and when Rangers couldnt compete, the 'levelled' the playing field by financial doping which went on for over a decade!

Then you have politicians falling over themselves to help Rangers, posturing for easy votes, trying to exert political pressure on HMRC not to go after the £75m they owe the taxpayer, telling Celtic that they will not prosper without Rangers, etc etc.

There has been a stark contrast in the treatment of both clubs during their insolvency events, we are just giving them a taste of the abuse we receive from them and others. Nothing wrong with a little bit of Karma.

Was delighted with the demise of Torpedo, but they were hardly "biggest" rivals. Mild irritant for a while really.

Was also similarly delighted with the demise of CHF, but the circus that surrounded that as it was mid season was ridiculous. Again, minor irritant.

Would I like to see Tallaght, SPA or Bohs disappear? Probably not, no.
