losing muscle mass

    hi all, first time posting in this forum.

    i have a problem with a muscle in my forearm so am unable to train chest, shoulders back etc - anything that involves gripping.

    i'm still doing legs and running about 50km per week. usually i would lift weights 5 days a week - arms, back, shoulders legs and chest on different days.

    i plan to rest my arm about 4-6 weeks. i'm not a beefcake or anything - 6'3" and 90kg.

    my question is, should i expect to lose much muscle mass resting up for this period of time? or will the running and leg workouts i do and good diet help maintain my current physique?

    Train your other arm. There seems to be evidence to suggest unilateral training in the case of injury slows the rate of muscle loss/strength decrease on the injured side.

    Look into getting a pair of hooks maybe - theyre like straps but remove all need to grip so can do pulling exercises still.

    Running 50km a week doesn't constitute leg training at all in my book and will likely speed up your rate of muscle loss.

    Eat 1 to 1.5g of protein per lb of bodyweight to prevent any additional energy requirements being met by muscle tissue, or at least mitigate it somewhat.

    Think of ways to train around your issue. for example, pressups, HSPUs etc train upper body without gripping. Rows with straps etc.
    Best example will depend on your exact issue of course.

    Plus what Hanley said about enough protein is important.

    Expect to see a small decrease in strength, but from personal experience you shouldn't lose any noticeable amount of mass as long as you are eating right.

    thanks for the advice guys,

    i'm eating well so i have that covered off.

    i'll keep up the running and squats etc but will add in push ups.

    i was just curious as this is the longest break i will ave taken since i started working out 5 or 6 years ago.
