I dont know why.. but when i saw this and had to think of the adjoining name, i thought of India-Lee.... not sure why... India is a very pretty name though.. Nice and unusual :D

India was on my girls name list for both my babies. First was a boy, and then my girl just wasn't an "India" when she came out :-)

It was going to be India-Rose. I think it sounds amazing. Rose is a very popular middle name or "double-barrell" name. I think it's so pretty. My daughter has it as her middle name too.

Eh, this is Newborn and Toddlers, not AH. Do you think someone comes on here looking for thoughts for a name for their unborn baby just for some people to take the p*ss out of it?

I personally dislike the name India anything. When I think of India I think of dirty rivers and Shanty towns.

At the risk of sounding like I'm trolling I'll mention that there is another porn star called India (just India).
I dont know of any people that arent porn stars who are called India. Here we have two people that are porn stars who are called India.
Maybe something a little more traditional would be doing the kid a favour.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,286 ✭✭✭tfitzgerald

I like India as a child's name but on it's own nothing added on to it . People will shorten it back to India anyway so why bother

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 949 ✭✭✭LoanShark

My niece is called India. There is no second name to go with it. As a family we do shorten it to Indy, or lengthen it to indianna.. At first when I heard what they were gonna call her, I thought they were mad, now I think tue name suits the child..

Also her mothers family are of Indian origin, so she has the characteristics to
    Carry of such a name..

But to answer your question, what would you add to it, I'd try India-Grace..

Wow you must really like porn. Me... I prefer the real thing. Check this out (just to broaden your horizons and give you something to use the Internet for other than porn)

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/India_(given_name)

Agreed with keeping India on its own. I like it much better too but with our surname i don't know if it goes.

Thanks again for the inputs. Its all been very very helpful....:)

lol I couldn't name very many porn stars tbh. It does seem like the most famous people called india are porn stars though. I haven't heard of any of the ten non-porn famous people in that list.

Can we stop with the discussions on porn stars names, final warning. Keep it on topic and suggest names like the OP asked, proper names, not names like India Tech Support.

India is a beautiful name-dont mind all the people who drag up how she could be slagged or there are porn stars with that name etc, just wait until you see her and you will know what to call her.

names will always be shortened, teased or compared in one way or another!
    India may is lovely though.
best of luck with the birth!

But surely you know the name is going to raise eyebrows? What you might consider wonderful and unique, many would consider just plain odd. It's like calling a kid Shakira if you ask me…

Will I just call her Mary?

Thanks for your input though, it's inspiring me to go with India more than ever.

Love India Marie and India May. They have been added to the shortlist-which ain't that short anymore!

What's wrong with Mary? You could go with Pocahontas if you want to keep the Indian theme…

Oh come'on...I have a very mainstream name and the kids still found some way to tease me over it. That's the reality of life and there's no point in conforming to anyone else's idea of what is "normal" with the hope of fitting in.

OP - I think India is a lovely name & I'm sure you'll come up with a great name combo :)

    You might consider this too:
    [Freakonomics Vid]

This is interesting but very localised, I mean Tyrone is an African American name? Surely not, I supose it's like when we hear of americans or australians called coleen, and we're like "you called your daughter - girl?".

Real Irish names aren't always easier, when I worked in england my boss announced that an Irish girl called 'Ooff' would be starting the next week and we had to explain the pronunciation of Aoife.

btw The only porn star I could put a face to is called Ron, a name that I always associate with midddle aged grey polyester wearing middle management.

India is a beautiful name but as another poster said, it doesn't always fit the child (like any name really).

That's not really the point of it. It's saying that the name can be an indicator of economic circumstance. Like over here, names like Britney, Chardonnay and Kylie are probably not going to be names of choice of middle class parents…
