We would be pretty horrible members of the toys and board games forum if we did not play board games. :P

Personally, we generally game once a month. The games vary, reguarly we play twilight imperium (Although, at the moment, that has taken a back seat to a game of thrones. Sometimes scattered euro games show their faces too.

At the moment I own about 20 "real" board games (By 'Real' I refer to games that would be associated more with the hobby, or the identification of 'gamer' rather than those that are generally available in the local toy shop.)

    .

I think you would be pleasantly(?)suprised at the level of boardgaming activity that is going on. A great resource to give you an idea of the extent and different variety of games that are being played is Board Game Geek http://boardgamegeek.com/all. If you are in Dublin then Gamers World just off Jervis Street is very good for purchasing games. Equally if you want to dip your toe back into the gaming world and the location suits you there is a friendly group on the Southside of Dublin http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/SouthDublinBoardgamers/ who would be more than happy to invite you along to a session. There is an amazing world of games out there to be played and enjoyed.

1 - "Still"???? Chess is a board game and I think you'll find people "still" play it...

2 - Settlers of Caran. Not sure if "still" comes into the equation because I only discovered it a few years ago...

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

It is my intention to get my little one involved in board games to test and exercise her little brain, but its a great way to spend time together too :D Just not sure what to start her on. She is only 5 :)

At 5, dexterity games might work best.

Looping Louie if you can find it, and something like buckaroo should be available anywhere.

Is that the one with the airplane going round in circles, and you have to press a buttom to get him to jump over things? Played that once at a board-games bar here in Berlin once. That game was fekin awsome! but then I was drunk, bt still, it was fun....

Yes she received a version of Buckaroo for christmas only it was not a horse as in the original, but a Kangaroo :D We knocked some good laughs from it but she is a competitive little minx and gets flustered if she does not win. Have no idea where she got that from  She is very clever though...hmmm Chess???:P

Yeah I just bought that for me and I'm 27 for the same reasoning :D

OP you're never too old to play games. Or at least I haven't gotten to an age where you are (and if I do please shoot me). I play just about everything. From silly dexterity games (Louie) to silly party games (Say Anything or Cash n Guns) to strategic/tactical games (Dominant Species or Carcassonne) to co-op games (Pandemic or Eldar Sign lately) to downright thematic fun games (Last Night on Earth). Heck I'll play Risk, Cluedo, even Monopoly (Though no Free Parking cash rule) if that's what people want to play.

Oh a good place to start might be to check out Dicetower.com There's a guy called Tom Vasel that runs it that has some enthusiastic reviews. Liking a game he reviews though is the easy part. Finding it, available to Ireland is much tougher.
He also has a top 100 picks. And so those his daughter Melody which may give you some ideas for games kids would enjoy. There's also a peoples choice but be aware that is most likely a hardcore element that will pick what are called "heavy" games, complex and perhaps difficult to jump right into.
Boardgamegeek is THE website for details on games and if you search for one there is a marketplace on the page where you can buy from other gamers. It's how I get about half of the games I buy. Keep note as well that some game have no ingame text and the english rules can usually be found online meaning you can buy off those cheap germans (that might be a more advanced move for later in your collection ;) ).
There is also a shop in Dublin on Jervis street that might be able to help you get started, on that, one last piece of advice, stay away form any miniatures games or collectable card games unless your pocket is weighing you down ;)

What? All that text and not one suggested game?!! Ok, I don't have kids and I'm recommending a family game that should be easy to find on the basis that everyone else does (I dont actually own this one) "Ticket To Ride". Perhaps others could chime in too. If the price is too steep there check out "That's my fish", very simple game and can be tried on Android and (probably) Iphone/pad for cheap before going all out for the physical copy.

My daughter is 5 (since November). We play Ticket To Ride and Carcassonne with her. Obviously she doesn't know how to play them well (in terms of strategy) but she CAN play them. "It's Alive" is one she really likes and does win from time to time with some of the more advanced rules taken out. Zooloretto is one she likes also.

Dexterity games like Gulo Gulo and Animal Upon Animal never were her thing. Die Seidler Von Catan Junior http://www.catan.de/catan-spiele/catan-junior.html is a good one also for her. NOT to be confused with Catan: Junior.

Have played boardgames every thur in my house/friends houses for the last 10 years or so. in my 40s now and if anything enjoy boardgames/cardgames more than I did when I was younger.

Know a large amount of people with the same interests. Always happy to help people interested in learning/playing

I also like a few games that are more group/card based, such as: Apples to Apples, Things, Munchkins

What games do you play? Smallworld is a favourite of mine if you want a quick game. It has a set amount of turns so as long as players don't procrastinate too much you should usually finish in or under an hour.

As it happens we've day of drinking and playing board games arranged for this weekend and Smallworld is one of the games we'll hopefully get around to playing. Its a good laugh alright.
