There I was munching away on a chicken breast. I eat 6 a day, 7 different meals.

My colleague sitting beside me starts to tell me I'm wasting my time, that I would be much better off replacing all the chicken I eat with his marvelous protein shakes. He told me eating chicken/eggs/milk or pretty much any food was a waste of time, I should just be drinkin 2/3 protein shakes a day and that would be more than enough to sustain muscle growth....

I just shrugged this off as I usually do when I get schooled by a bro scientist.

Then started to tell me that I should be benching atleast 140% my own body weight, that any newbie in the gym would be able to lift 100%. He continued if I have been lifting 2 years I should be much bigger than I am (15 stone) with I should have nearly 0% bodyfat (15%) He told me after 2 years lifting without any steroids that anyone would be a tank, along the lines of arnie....

He then concreted all this with "Trust me, I've been at this for 10 years"..... he's mid 30's, 5"8' and 8.5stone

I think he heard some "truths", mixed them up and presents them as facts.

At least he didn't say the 30g of protein one

He did say my body couldn't digest 4 eggs worth of protein in one go....

1 egg is bout 6.5g protein
    4 eggs is 26g

So the body cant take in 26g of protein

i doubt he's 8.5 stone if im honest, no-one can be stupid enough to claim any experience in weightlifting when they weigh as much as a prepubescent girl

    8.5stone & 0% bodyfat - he'd be dead!

Bro science in general when it comes to Creatine makes me Lol.

    1) It's a steroid
    2) It's dangerous
    3) It has no benefit

    They'd be my favourites.

    i love bro science -

    as an aside....

I made the mistake once of hiring a guy cos he'd a sports nutrition qualification.
it came down to two guys - and me and my side kick in the department are mad for training so we went with him over the other guy.
Oddly it is the little things that make the difference :)

decent worker - but he ate ****e all day whilest lecturing us on nutrition and training - depsite doing neither.
That lad could put away muffins and dairy milk more than a pregnant women with cravings.

Turns out he only did the course cos his missus was doing it - she was into it.

    Gummypanda,

Which piece of bro science are you referring to when you say 30g protein?

The one that says there's no point in taking more than 30g of protein in a meal because your body can't absorb more.

It cant digest 30g of protein the same way your car cant fit a tank of petrol into the cylinders in one go...

    Not an approriate analogy.

Is there a grain of truth to that 30g protein theory i.e. everyone is different, weight, height etc and their max protein intake varies accordingly?

Or can we eat as much protein in one sitting as we wish?

P.S. I'm a nutrition noob trying to avoid bro science!

The rate of protein synthesis doesn't significantly increase after 25-30g protein

Thats true, but the jumping to to say we can't digest more than 30g is bro-science.

Basically all it means is that it takes longer to digest 40g compare to 30g. Which is rather obvious I would have thought.

I would have told him that there are no more weights.

If the human body were incapable of utilising more than 30g of protein at a time we would have died while we were still in the hunter gatherer stage of our evolution due to our dependence on meat.

While there probably is an upper limit to how much protein one could digest in a given time period, it would be altered by different factors such as their regular diet, activity level, heart rate and size. The idea that every single human on the planet can only digest 30g at a time (which is in itself vague - how long is that, 30 minutes, an hour?) is not just bro science, it's straight up ****ing retarded.

But sure what's wrong with eating a chicken breast at every meal? Perfect and tasty way to get protein

I've heard some ghastly stuff during my time training. One incident springs to mind as the most horrifying piece of broscience I've ever heard.

I was training in the gym one day and for a period of about 3 months based my training completely on the compunds no isolation excerises at all. I was about 2 and a half months into it and at the time of day I trained there was this lad who trained at the same time I did. He wasn't very muscular and seemed to follow the ridiculously high volume training routines found in Flex.

I was in fairly decent shape at the time and was carrying a bit of size, but he strolls over to the power cage one day just as I Finish my last set of squats and informs me that by doing the low reps i.e 3 that I'm "not filling my muscles with blood only water!!"

And how did I expect to gain muscle.?

I was shocked at his ignorance and managed not to laugh out loud in his face. I shrugged him off anyway and continued training.

But hearing that had to be the king of broscience theories I've ever heard. :)
