Switching power supply

    Does it matter if you use a 60W power supply on a mac that shipped with a 45W supply and vice versa ?

    No, the voltage supplied would be the same. The wattage is just the power-load it can cope with.

    The higher wattage power adaptors simply have more capacity to supply power to the larger machines. They try to ship with the smallest power supply possible to avoid bulky bricks that you have to carry around.

    However, do not use a lower rated power supply than the one that shipped with your Mac as it will just not work / overload and cut out.

    How do you mean overload ? Will it not just charge slowly? e.g. you can charge an ipad with an iphone charger but it will be much slower than the ipad charger.

    Well, it could just fail to charge, or it could overload the charger and cause it to trip out / burn a fuse out.

    The charger would not be able to meet the power demands of the computer.
