was meant to take a trip to new zealand in january for three weeks but things didnt materialise , was wondering what the weather is like in the south island from around the middle of march to the first week in april , looking at the calender would suggest autumn average enough weather ?

Yep would be average enough...probably still 15-25 degrees depending where you are, I remember it being 30 in Christchurch one day I was there in April. March/April/May usually stay decent enough but the weather here is very unpredictable at the best of times. We've had a pretty ****e summer this year in Wellington with not a huge amount of sun.

It does plunge down low down the South Island at night time, The west coast gets lots of rain but usually the east can still be nice. Nelson in particular gets great sunshine. Queenstown can nearly freeze at night then bounce back up to 20 degrees during the day..weird!
