Men who do Yoga

Diving to work today I saw a sticker on the back window of the car in front of me saying “I love Bikram!” That’s that yoga thing that you do in a room at about 40º isn’t it I thought to myself. I knew it was either that or the name of some Indian dude so as I passed the car and stole a glance across at the driver of the car I expected to see a nubile, supple young lady capable of putting her legs behind her head. To my surprise (and disappointment) the driver turned out to be a tall bearded man.

Is my image of yoga classes misinformed then?

Has yoga become the realm of bearded, hairy backed man now? If so then Music videos and TV have a lot to answer for as it’s not all beautiful lycra clad ladies that do it!

So are there many of you men folk out there that participate in this particular fitness activity?

    If so why?

Also if you are a lady and you take yoga classes how do you feel about having men in your class?

I have (not the Bikram stuff tho), and can guarantee you after 10 minutes sweating profusely, I'm no longer interested in checking the ladies out but more concerned about my own appearance and general ineptitude.

Have done it and would do it again. Also did pilates every week (now every second week) as part of rehab for a knee reconstruction.

It's awesome for strength, balance etc, and there's usually fit birds bending over to perve on. Win win tbh

But that's still a good 10min you spent checking the ladies out. ;)

I am taking it up and the sexuality or the gender ratio is simply not something I ever even considered.

I felt the flexibility, balance and relaxation training would be a good addition to my exercise routine. As to why I chose Bikram over conventional yoga I just thought it was an extra challenge.

There is a good forum about yoga in general on boards.

Them bearded dudes are the yoga-practising man stereotype. I've done it and don't give a sh1t about men being there.

I actually did not think this was an issue, yoga is centuries old and as far as I know about the exercise (which is not much) it was mainly practiced by men.

I am looking forward to my first class.

I'm not saying its a big issue but I did think that most classes would be almost exclusively female dominant.

I would have thought it was 50/50 again it will be my first class so I don't really know. To me it just seemed an intense hour and a half according to the yoga forum and a different form of exercise and training.

For that hour and half I expect better flexibility, to be relaxed, and I learn am exercise that exercises my balance. I am in my 40s now and believe it or not you start to lose your sense of balance, even ladders become scary.

To be honest I couldn't give a tuppence for what people think, even if there was an issue.

I am going to do yoga....there I said it,,,I am out of the closet no more hiding it away,,I AM GOING TO DO BIKRAM YOGA,, phew that felt good.

    Out and proud.

i cant believe this is actually being discussed!!!

    do men practice yoga?

well lets see. the home of yoga is india. there are approx 500 million males in india (a guess at half the approx population).

so yes, id say men practice yoga.

the shocking question is, are men so repressed they still think yoga isn't masculine enough for them?

    try it. its ****in great.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,928 ✭✭✭✭rainbow kirby

It's great for flexibility and core strength, and as such supplements many other sports well. More men should do it :pac:

It's quite common in Toronto, you see men walking around everywhere with yoga mats under their arms.

I dated a guy who was a hard-core yoga enthusiast. Did hot yoga five mornings a week and didn't drink. He was built too, a complete ride. Personality of a newt but his body made up for it :)

Three exclamation marks you must be very upset with me.

I only really wanted to see how the ratio of women to men is in yoga classes.

I know that it comes from India and there are lots of men in India but that doesn’t mean that lots of men do it outside of India. (Or even inside India actually as that very flawed logic. I mean there are lots of women in Canada and there are lots of lumberjacks in Canada that doesn’t mean that there are lots of female lumberjacks in Canada compared to how many male lumberjacks there are.)

I never said there was anything wrong with Yoga just that I just always thought that way more women did it then men. I am learning that it may not be so which is fine. I wouldn’t mind giving it a go myself as everyone here seams to love it.

The kettlebell class I went to last night was all women.

So, yes, men can be interested in developing flexibility, and women can be interested in developing strength and power.

It's nice when everyone wins. :)

Us men don't like it because we like to feel genuine actualities in movement and strain else it don't feel benificial.

Like how a woman thinks she not being lazy by merely typing, despite sitting down

There's a Yoga place down here in Ringsend Dublin where everyone is on view(if your tall enough to peep through the window) and most participants are women. Both men and women there always have slimmed bodies and always looked oiled for some reason, don't think its sweat ;)

My Bikram yoga class used to have nearly a 50/50 mix of men & women. Of late though there seems to be way more ladies in it.

The man who introduced me to Bikram is always very enthusiastic about the amount of clothing on the ladies in the class......he kind of ruins my yoga buzz when I talk to him now - when I am talking about what a good class I had, he is nodding his head and thinking of the girl who bent over in front of him.

Ah well, we all practise yoga for different reasons! :D

It can be good for inner peace too, I think that was the original intent behind yoga, to switch off the repetitive thoughts so you enter a state of complete stillness in touch with your body and environment.

I think you might be right. My gay neighbour loves it anyway!
I've tried ashtangi yoga before and it is bloody hard, gave me a whole new respect for the levels of strength and fitness required.
In fact some of those serene looking middle aged ladies must be as strong as a fúcking horse!
    Bendy too:rolleyes:

I did it before and enjoyed it. (Very expensive normally but most places give you a 2 week introductory rate for cheap). Was about 2/3 women if that's what you want to know.

Alot of people seem to have this opinion in Ireland but in reality Yoga is simply a great form of excercise that isn't offered in many other sports/activities.

It promotes correct breathing and flexibility which can be transfered to any sport.

Most serious sports teams incorporate some form of yoga to thier daily fitness routines

i would definitely recommend Yoga. Its relaxing and has helped me with my running. In the class i go to 2/3 are women. The only problem i have with it is there is no one my age. I am 17 and everyone else is at least 10 years older.
