    Live from 12 for at least one of us ;)

    Martyn Irvine kicks it off in the Omnium qualifier. Eoin Mullen makes his World Cup debut in the kilo, with the sprint and kieren to come over the weekend. Caroline Ryan is also riding. Team GB have a strong squad looking to get some competitive practice on the Olympic track

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 11,669 Mod ✭✭✭✭RobFowl

    Martyn in good shape by the looks of things, expecting Caroline win a medal in the IP at some stage and hopefully here as the coverage will be good.
    It's genuinely great to see a proper sprinter competing too (with the greatest respect to Felix English he's an indurance athlete who did the sprint before for experience (and what an experience :D)).
    Best of luck to them all and to team GB as well.

    1st heat of Omnium qualification just taken place. They are now repairing the track following a crash. Good start for the new track!

    Martyn Irvine goes next. 12 to qualify out of 16

  • Administrators, Social & Fun Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 78,393 Admin ✭✭✭✭✭Beasty

    He's down. Nasty crash. Cervelo wrecked but he's back up on a Dolan. Race neutralise d as they repair the track

    It's just his wheel so they ar trying to get the Cervelo back for him!

  • Administrators, Social & Fun Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 78,393 Admin ✭✭✭✭✭Beasty

    The Fin is out and 5 others have lost a lap, so he now just has to keep out of more trouble

  • Administrators, Social & Fun Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 78,393 Admin ✭✭✭✭✭Beasty

    He's taken the next sprint. 5 points. Job almost done

  • Administrators, Social & Fun Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 78,393 Admin ✭✭✭✭✭Beasty

    He sat at the back for the last few laps, staying out of trouble, qualifying 5th:)

    Australia have just set a new World record in the women's team sprint qualifying. It's clearly a fast track!

    New British record for Jess Varnish and Vickie Pendleton. They will face Australia for the gold later on.

    First event proper for the Omnium. Flying lap. 16th up. 5th place with 8 to go.

  • Administrators, Social & Fun Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 78,393 Admin ✭✭✭✭✭Beasty

    9th place. Only Europeans ahead of Martyn are France, Germany and Italy. A good start in one of his weaker events.

    Yep decent start, I see that Martyn's main rivals (Poland, Belgium, Italy and Denmark) have all made it through to the competition proper. Anywhere in the region of top 10 should do alright for Martyn though.

    Omnium Points race up now.....

    120 laps

    He's got a lap with 5 others. Up to 6th

  • Administrators, Social & Fun Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 78,393 Admin ✭✭✭✭✭Beasty

    Down to 7th. Final sprint to go and he needs some points. Now clear with 2 others. 2 laps to go

  • Administrators, Social & Fun Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 78,393 Admin ✭✭✭✭✭Beasty

    Took the last sprint to move back to 6th

  • Administrators, Social & Fun Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 78,393 Admin ✭✭✭✭✭Beasty

    So here we go again. 6 finals plus the Omnium elimination race coming up after the opening ceremony in a few minutes. Front row seat tonight with the Irish team based just ahead of me in the centre of the track.

    Eoin Mullen will be doing the kilo with Martyn Irvine back for the Omnium later on

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 11,669 Mod ✭✭✭✭RobFowl

    Eoin Mullens PB is (i think) 1:05.549
    Irish record is 1 Min 03.533 by a Mr Irvine (anyone know what became of him??)

    Nice one ladies. Another new World record, this time to Varnish and Pendleton in the team sprint:D

    1:05.281 - a tough heat against Matt Crampton but an impressive 7th place with 4 heats to go

    Edit - looks like his bars may have been loose - they certainly are now

    12th. Not too much damage as the Belgian came out shortly after him, and he's quite a way ahead of him in the competition (1 place behind in qualification)

    7th in the overall. 2 ahead of Poland and 3 (?) ahead of Bel.

    Omnium overall standings day 1: Martyn Irvine in 7th (27), Poland 9th (29), Belgium 12th (36) and Denmark 20th (63). It's looking good for Olympic qualification at the moment.

    I think Martyn stays in 7th with 95 pt advantage over Poland. The Dane finished quite a bit down so I would think he is 90% certain of going to the olympics now.

    Is it not 85 points the buffer between Ireland and Poland now? I make it Belgium on 843 Ireland on 785, Poland on 700 and Denmark on 670.
    This would mean Ireland has a healthy 115 point cushion over Denmark who are lying outside the Olympic quota positions.
    I'm just working off quick calculations I done in a couple of mins so I'm open to correction here.

    Here is my calculation (open to correction) on the European quota placings:

    Top 8 qualify for London Olympics:
    1. Great Britain 1,610pts
    2. Germany 1,270
    3. France 1,243
    4. Spain 1,033
    5. Italy 990
    6. Belgium 843
    7. IRELAND 785
    8. Poland 700
    9. Denmark 670
    10. Netherlands 498
    The World Championship points scale in Melbourne is as follows:
    1st=500
    2nd=320
    3rd=240
    4th=220
    5th=200
    6th=180
    7th=160
    8th=140
    9th=120
    10th=100
    11th=80
    12th=60
    13th onwards=30

    So what this means is that if Denmark does not finish on the podium at the World Championships, Irvine just needs to finish no more than 5 places behind the Danish rider. If the Danish rider does not finish in the top 7 then Irvine simply needs to complete the World Championship event to secure his Olympic ticket.

    He has the biggest legs I've ever seen on a cyclist. More like a power lifter. His upper body didn't match his lower body at all. Built but not overly big upper body then bang, huge ass and the most outrageous quads ever!

    Edit: For those that haven't seen him here is Robert Forstemann...

    Now that it's over if anyone is bothered to answer a few trivial questions.
    Why did Chris Hoy use a road bike to get him from the side of the track to the assembly area, no more than 20 Meters, and why does the moped have pedals?
    I also saw a few riders go below the lowest line and they weren't disqualified.
    I was watching it with my son who knows even less about track cycling than I do and after seeing a few slow bicycle races he asked why they didn't just go from the gun and then it happened. Great entertainment.

    You can go on the blue (flat) part of the track, but you can't overtake (well...undertake) on it, unless the rider you are passing is drifting down the track and pushes you into it (as happened with Victoria Pendleton when she was undertaken by Anna Mears). If you undertake on the blue, you are disqualified. Sometimes the riders in the sprints are going so slowly that they have to go on the flat part, as if they were on the steeply banked section at the ends of the track, their right pedal could hit the track.

    Why Chris Hoy uses a road bike to go 20 metres into the middle I have no idea. Sometimes he does little laps in the middle, but sometimes he just cycles to his seat and then gets off!!

    The sprinters don't go from the gun, as the guy behind is trying to stay behind (so he can slipsteam past on the final bend), and the guy in front is trying to surprise the guy behind by launching his attack when he can take the other guy by surprise, therefore opening up as big a gap as possible so the other guy can't slipsteam him. if they both went from the gun, the guy behind would always win.

    As for the moped, Im guessing that it runs off some kind of dynamo engine that is powered by the pedals. They have to have the moped to get the cyclists up to speed gradually, since the gear on the bikes for that event will be so heavy (Hoy hit over 70kph when he crossed the line), that they couldn't do a sprint type start. Normal mortals like you and I wouldnt even have a hope of turning the pedals!

    Anyway, the weekend was brilliant. After the scumbagness of some of the premiership soccer payers, and the farce that was the boxing on saturday night, it is good to see athletes like Hoy and Pendleton on the TV and all over the papers.

    That race was actually quite funny. I've been waiting for someone to do that for a long time and I got to see it at the weekend.

    I won't answer the rest of your questions as I don't know anything about the rules or that of track cycling.

    The derny has pedals to help smooth control the speed: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Derny

    I didn't see it, so can't answer the question about Hoy. Might just be easier than clambering around on cleats?

    The blue band: Between the infield (sometimes referred to as an apron) and the actual track is the blue band (called "côte d'azur") which is typically 10% of the surface. The blue band is not technically a part of the track; although it is not illegal to ride there, moving into it to shortcut another rider will result in disqualification. During time trials, pursuits or other timed events, the blue band is obstructed with sponges or other objects. The blue band is a warning to cyclists that they may scrape their pedal along the infield when in a curve, which can easily result in a crash. (from Wikipedia)

    In sprints they don't go from the gun because neither rider really wants to be out front. If you're out front your opponent can stay in your slipstream all the way around then pip you at the post. If you are out the front you have to watch behind you the whole time so as not to get caught off guard when you opponent decides to go for it.Again, Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sprint_%28cycling%29

    .......and lets face it, I think the guy can do pretty much anything he wants these days! If 4 scantily clad women came and carried him to his seat in a litter I don't think anyone would complain!

    do

    ok. i will.

    I was reading the other thread about track season, and my understanding is that I need accreditation, which normally takes place on the first saturday of the month and I can hire a bike there. I can do the acreditation bit on a club ci licence, but I need a race licence to race.
    What shoes do you need? Are cleats allowed, are there specific pedals? what gear do you need?
    is anyone else looking at getting accredited soon?

    The bikes at the track are either straps pedals or Look Delta AFAIK. If you have cycling shoes already and intend on going on a Saturday morning I have Delta cleats I can lend you, as I should be there. Otherwise, usual cycling gear, helmet, gloves if you like etc.

    At the same time I'll let someone clarify on the pedals, it's been awhile since I've used one of the rentals.
