does anyone know if the custody officer job is 12hr shifts or what kinda shift pattern they run?

It'll be shifts but I imagine the hours will vary. 12 hours one day, 8 another, that sort of thing.

From what i hear and what friends in similar jobs tell me, its normally 4days on 3 days off at 8hrs per day shift, for a month or so then a stint of night shifts at 12 hrs per shift but thats for 3 nights on 4 days off, plus lets not forget overtime.

Folks, I by no means am any sort of expert but id be saying that the chances of overtime are going to be very slim the public sector across the board are trying to cut it out alltogether as it seems to work out cheaper in the long run to employ extra staff as to pay out large overtime sums!

Dont get me wrong im one of the lucky ones that got the thick envelops and im hopeing for plenty of overtime but I wouldnt be counting on it!

Anyone know what the base salary after trainingis going to be, I see some people have £23000 up but to be honest that seems a bit high to be starting on hopefully thats spot on though!

yea, there wasnt much info at all, just makes everyone more anxious. i already have Counter terriost clearance from company I work for at the minute so hopefully that speeds it up a bit

I suppose it might help, but I would imagine they will got through the motions as normal regardless of any prior security vetting.

If you already have CTC clearance you don't have to do it again. Lucky Hayes!

Just to give you an update - they are definitely working their way down the merit list.

I spoke to someone from recruitment and was told that I had recieved a 'holding' letter.

I asked if they could give me a hint as to where I am on the list - they couldn't say over the phone, but said if I e-mailed I could find out exactly where I am on the list.

    E-mail already sent.

I really hope they are working in small batches.......and that they will soon send me vetting/medical forms.

Now I wish I hadn't asked about merit place - I'm lower on the list for NIPS than I was for PSNI in 2010.

    My merit place is 460-480.

I really hope they take on 500 recruits :)

Makes you kick yourself when you know you lost concentration during the observation test and should have scored a few more points on it.

Sorry to hear that buddy, keep your chin up its not over till they say so, and as it was mentioned there's 500+ redundancies and if they want to cut out over time and as again mentioned its cheaper to employ more staff than to pay for overtime for fewer staff you may still be in with a shout.

P.s anybody wishing to share their merit place please follow suit and disply it as a range of numbers i.e 200-210 150-160 etc.

    I sent an e-mail to:

    NIPSRecruitment@dojni.x.gsi.gov.uk

They were super fast to reply. That is one thing I like about this process it has been quick compared to PSNI one.

    Super fast, you weren't wrong...

320-340, I guess just hold tight.

    Cheers weepete.

I'm just gutted as I thought half the number of applicants might means my merit place could be halved....but unfortunately not.

I did think the AC was easier than PSNI one though, meaning that more people would score better, and also I screwed up the observation a bit.

Fingers crossed though as people do pull out or fail vetting/medical, and we don't know how many people will be appointed.

I would really appreciate it if people would indicate roughly where they are on the merit list - even those who have got the big brown envelope. If you don't want to make it public, even a wee private message with the 100-120 or whatever would keep me happy. I like to mull over the numbers.....

Nice one weepete, my last PSNI merit place was about 440, so not pleased at my NIPS merit place.

As i said before buddy chin up we both know a lot of people can drop out and free up other places and hopefully they will keep the list for a few years to come and if and when they need more recruits.

Got mine too, between 160 -180.

    Not bad, not bad.

I wonder how many got vetting forms, 200? 250?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 187 ✭✭grad10

I'd guess at 250 myself allowing for people that fail the next steps.

I'd agree wth you weepet, though it depends on how many they want to take in per intake.

I hope more than 50 do not proceed with application process or fail, if they take 200 people on I need about 250 to drop out or fail........could be a very long wait.

got merit number of 100-110 quite happy with that. though has anyone started on these forms, theres quite a bit to them.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 88 ✭✭sydnor

Will be interesting to see how it proceeds now, especially the drop out level. Working in a prison in this capacity certainly isn't for everybody and I imagine some will begin to experience a few reservations.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 684 ✭✭✭wanadrum

Yep syndor - I hope you are right - I need a lot to drop out :)

Appart from having a concentration lapse in the observation test I don't know what I did wrong.....but everyone else who was in the psni c16 has got a much better merit place in this nips one, except for me?

Maybe you would all be better prison officers and I would be a better peeler?

Just kidding - Lets hope we all get in - we could form a new association for prison officers who were rejected from psni.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 88 ✭✭sydnor

I'm sure it's already been said but the AC was pretty easy meaning a lot of people were going to score high, meaning a lapse in concentration could potentially cost you a few places on the list.

For now I just hope they stick to their commitment and recruit at least 200 new Officers.

Or 400 so Wanadrum can be sure of a place too. The PSNI Nearly men, lol.

500 just to be sure Syndor!

430-450 not great i know, but considering my merit placing for psni was around 1000! im still fairly pleased, best of luck everyone

I received the big brown pack asking for all the pre-employment checks to be filled in so i'm taking that as a pretty good sign!
I've emailed to find out where I am on the merit list so will post when I hear back.

Just out of curiosity has anyone filled in all the forms yet? I'm confused about the Identity check form where it talks about a sponsor?? Anybody know if you leave that blank? May have to ring and enquire :)
