    Hi,

My MacBook pro2 won't switch on. It was working fine on Saturday but would not switch on yesterday. Decided to leave it rest overnight but alas it won't work today.

I checked battery and it has full charge. I tried turning it on with no battery and just cable but no joy.

    Has anyone any suggestions??

    Cheers

Does the white screen with the apple logo appear?

If you see this and it just hangs there with the spinning icon then it is most likely a hard drive issue.

hmm, you could try an SMC reset

Have a read through that list and if applicable, perform the steps to reset the SMC

If it doesn't power on at all, it could really be anything. Why not bring it in to CompuB and at least get a quote from them?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,161 ✭✭✭frag420

Rang compuB and they want 70 quid to look at it. Then whatever on top of that to fix it if it can't be fixed!!

Does anyone know anyone cheaper in Dublin area??

    Cheers

If you turn it on and hold the alt/ option key while the laptop is booting, can you see the boot disks?

I can't even get it that far, it won't turn on despite full battery and green light on cable/charger

That sounds like a fault with the motherboard so. I could be wrong but that's what i think. Motherboard replacements are generally not worth buying, it makes more sense to buy a new one

RightClick, Camden Street. €39 to have a look at it.
Any water damage to the machine?
If it's a decent model, You're probably talking about half the cost of a new mac to replace the motherboard.

And on the charge for looking at it, macs are a PITA to take apart(some of them,) and shops aren't charities... If work is done, stripping a laptop down and testing components, and you decide you don't want to shell out, then it was just charity work.

OP, if you have use of another mac then it would be worth your while to Firewire connect them both up and see if you can boot in via it and identify any faults before you go to a repair shop with a general "It don't work" question.

    How old is your MBP?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,161 ✭✭✭frag420

    Bought it Nov07

Hmm that's not what I wanted to hear. There is known issue with the graphics card (Nvidia 8600) in MBP's from June 2007 to September I think where nothing would display on screen at all, yours could be from that batch if it was old stock lying around in the shop.

Apple provided an extended 3 year warranty for the failure of the graphics card as it became a known issue. I had to get my logic board replaced a year ago and it was covered under the warranty.

    Have a read here

EDIT: Affected computers were manufactured between approximately May 2007 and September 2008

Actually this issue probably doesn't relate to you, only just realized you said the laptop wasn't turning on at all.

Fried GFX Chip could be interpreted as not turning on, usually not much of a response out of them..

Well you can hear the laptop on and working away when it's the known issue, the OP sounds like he's not getting a response from it all when he tries to power up?

Think I might go down the small claims route, because the Mac won't boot up at all, they can't run the test to see if the Nvidia chip is fried.

This appears to be a crafty way of getting out of replacing the board.

It's early 2008 model. You're covered for 5 years under Sales of Goods act.

I was having a similar issue last month.. turned out it was a faulty RAM module. If you think you can, try removing the back plate and taking out the ram modules one by one to see if that fixes it.
