Am looking at doing these two next after getting F6 & P1 today. Were they very doable as a combination and did you get classes for both?

Yes, they are. P2 can be tough enough so definitely advisable to do it with an easier subject like P3. I went to Independent Colleges and found them very good.

Well done to all who passed. I got P2 and P7 so only one of the other options left now. Cocker5 how was P5? Still trying to decide whether to do P5 or P6. Im in practice at the moment but hoping to move out of it once finished exams.

well done on P2 and P7...

Im going to do P7 as my last paper... can you let me know how you found it?
when looking at P4  and P6 ... I think P7 maybe the only one for me... while i know its going to be difficult... for me i think it the best of 3 evils :o

For me i found P5 grand.... If you liked P1 and P3 then P5 will be ok for you..

honestly what i did was every question in the book... honestly i did miss alot of lectures (my working hours are crap)... now not that i am saying it ok to miss them as usually i would never miss one... but due to my work hours it was beyond my control... but i did attempt every question... IMO its a very doeable paper... it has alot of stuff from previous papers rehashed etc... albeit it can be a boring subject... but very doable... alot lees work than P4 (even reading through the P4 sylabus scares me if im honest ;)).

I went to mick bristow in independent colleges... he's good....

It all depends if you like numeric questions better than a combo paper//

sorry soo long winded... but IMO P5 is a very doable paper! :P

fill me in on P7??? pretty please

I passed P7 as a first timer last exam sitting and the paper is also very doable.
I think the fail rate is so high because people come at it from the wrong perspective. They still have their P2 exam technique which is very formulaic and structured to the IAS/IFRS. There are very little few marks for this approach in P7.
A more practical approach is what the examiner wants to see. There are couple of recent examiner articles which are good at describing this method. Its not too difficult to adapt too either, common sense and a little creativity is what is required.

Passed F9, relieved as I ran out of time in a big way.

    Facing into F7 & F8 now.

What variant do I take? Irish or International? Have read due to 'New Rules' INT variant is better choice, but surely if working in Ireland the Irish variant is the one?

    Thanks!:)

PS SBWIFE, fair play to you that's excellent going!

PPS I think Text overrides email notification!

For the financial reporting papers all are based on IFRS, but the IRE variation also includes Irish GAAP. So what you are looking at is IRE as an International plus paper rather it being based solely on local GAAP. You'll see what I mean if you look at the past papers for Dec and June 2011.

Great. So does that mean there is more work in the IRE version? I guess I should as my training employer which one he'd prefer me to do? I guess if IFRS is the standard from 2012 for EU it would be easier just to do INT....

    Hi eimearnid

i did P2 the irish variant and passed it no problem so i would recommend you do it.. People get caught up in the extra work but there isnt much extra to it and it gives you the advantage of getting an auditing certificate cause if you do the international you wont have this option

The only difference in the exam is you will do the exam as an international question and part b or c of the question will ask you explain the difference between the Int or UK/Irish standard and 9/10 its a matter of listing off a couple of differences.. People get bogged down on the calculation questions thinking 'Oh but goodwill is counted differently in irish standard etc but it doesnt matter its all international unless asked in irish..

i reckon of the last exam maybe 15 marks was on the differences.

AFAIK the official marks guidance is that between 10 and 20 marks will go on the Irish GAAP stuff. I did P2 IRE and passed first time it's worth doing if you've any interest in audit.

Thanks for that. P7 is very doable also. To be honest I done it on my own and got 59. Now I did do a revision course but it wasn't great.

P7 is very similar to F8 with just a few new things added. The paper is very easy to follow and there does seem to be a trend in questions so if you just practice the questions you'll be fine. Thats actually how I studied the course. You know alot of the info already from F8,P1 and P2 so there no need to go away and read the book. Just read the articles (which I always find so important) and practice the questions.

Q1 is always audit planning and there is always a question on ethics and professionalism. The examiner changed a few sittings ago and her papers are alot nicer than the old ones.

Think im sold on P5 I didn't even consider doing P4 as I was exempt from F9 from college and I never really got it in college!! I always loved tax in college but I don't think it would be enough to get me through P6 I think there are some serious issues with the examiner and there seems to be no trend. Any P6 passers please let me know how you found it.

OK thanks Brad1234 - would same apply for F7/F8? Should I just take the IRL versions of those with a view to continuing on with P2/P7 IRL etc? Have just started work in an accounting practice so am clueless. :)

hiya. i passed P6 first time in Dec, i agree that there is no trend at all, and she always puts in tricky bits that have never been examined. IMO her dec paper was the easiest from all her papers. Its doable, but all the course has to be covered, cant pick and choose topics. And do all the questions in the book. I used Bpp in Galway and had a new lecturer, Paul McGuinness, he was really good i thought.

    Hi,

I was thinking of doing F6 and F7 together and then P1 on its own next time. Alot have said to me do not do those 2 subjects together its way too much.

Would I be better of doing F6 - Tax on its own now. Then F7 & P1 together at the next sitting.

    All advise welcome.

F6 is pretty straight forward and not huge in scope. F7 is considered one of the more difficult fundamental level papers. Out of the 3 you mention if there were one to do solo it would be F7 rather than F6. Why are you considering taking one on it's own? Why not F6 and F7 now, followed by P1 and P2.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4 MDub

Reason taking F6 on its own, been told its a really long course, best do it on its own. Also have a few things on between now & June & don't have the time to commit to doing 2 subjects this term.

F6 isn't very long. I think I covered it in a couple of weeks.

    Hi ACCAers,

Mulling over whether to do P5 or P7 in June.

Been a while since I did P5 stuff, management accounting and am a little more familiar with audit but would like some points of view/feedback on how people found these subjects...

I did P5 in december, found it ok.. very doable... its not management accounting as such... more along the lines of P1 and P3... with some other stuff added in... i found it fine... to be honest i found f7 far harder :P

cant comment on P7... going to attempt it in june! :pac:

The feedback on this thread regarding P7 is very useful to me also as I am going to attempt it in June but a colleague mentioned the concept of a "fundamental error"??
Can someone shed some light on this.. Is it question specific or the entire exam??

Just passed P4 myself on Monday.. Delighted to have got it first time:D.. I would recommend it for anyone working in the funds / financial services sector as you can relate significant sections of the course back to your day job which makes it easier to study but be prepared to work at it.. Got lectures from Liam Doran in Independent Colleges & would definitely recommend him to anyone interested in lectures for P4

All ACCA exams are marked on a fundamental error concept. if you make a fundamental error the examiner will automatically fail you no matter what score you got. A fundamental error would be something like miscalulating the consolidation in P2, this would be deemed fundamental required knowledge for anyone to be passed!

What is the source of this?.
I have never heard of this 'fundamental error concept' I have often made massive mistakes in an exam but still managed to scrape through.

I have to agree with loveacca on the fundemental error issue.. Ive made major "fcuk ups" in an exam and still passed albeit scrapped a pass but still!

loveacca ... I just registered with Independent coleges with Dave.. collected my books at lunctime... the study kit looks pretty thick :o

    That is utter nonsense
I would say 99.9% of candidates miscalculate the consolidation and miss something very crucial.

So whatever you mean by fundamental error its not that.

I've heard it from two different lectures one for P2 and the other P7, one of whom used be a marker. If you look at some of the examiners reports they reference fundamental errors aswell.

I've made my share of errors on exams aswell and got through so it prob just depends on what they consider fundamental!

IMO I think this just means that because it is one of the final papers there is alot of assumed knowledge from the fundamental papers e.g F8 so if you are going to mentioned things in your exam paper that you have learned from other papers the examiner will be able to tell if you truly understood a concept. P2 is very helpful when talking about audit risk in P7 because you should know alot about the accounting standards/Treatment of certain transactions. In P7 you will be given financial statements and you should be able to use your P2 knowledge to tell the examiner that there is a risk of certain figs being overstated/understated because the treatment the company has used is incorrect *N.B* always good idea to sate the IAS and the correct treatment. But remember if you don't know the correct treatment don't make something up as examiners see through this. I wouldn't be getting too caught up with trying to remember things from other papers that you can include, just don't make something up for the sake of writing something. You won't be marked down but it won't do you any favours with regard marks and time. This paper is very long and you will need all the time you have so don't waste it.

In other words they are not trying to catch you out because you won't lose marks for fundamental errors but I guess they are just questioning why are these fundamental errors occuring in the first place as we should have already passed the papers that the "error" is coming from.

Pass Rates are up (I meant posted I think they're down or flat pretty much for everything except F7)

Paper F1, Accountant in Business, 63%*

    Paper F2, Management Accounting, 53%*

    Paper F3, Financial Accounting, 54%*

Paper F4, Corporate and Business Law, 49%

    Paper F5, Performance Management, 38%

    Paper F6, Taxation, 48%

    Paper F7, Financial Reporting, 56%

Paper F8, Audit and Assurance, 36%

    Paper F9, Financial Management, 38%

Paper P1, Governance, Risk and Ethics, 51%

    Paper P2, Corporate Reporting, 48%

    Paper P3, Business Analysis, 51%

Paper P4, Advanced Financial Management, 34%

Paper P5, Advanced Performance Management, 29%

    Paper P6, Advanced Taxation, 39%

Paper P7, Advanced Audit and Assurance, 31%

Feel much better about my squeaking through at P5 - 29% pass rate is painfully low.
